It's several things. Like you said housing isn't permanent, it reverts to the state after 75 years. It's also a general mistrust of financial instrument investments like 401ks. Owning and renting properties or buying valuable goods is a more "real" investment for retirement in that culture. My mother in law has a couple apartments and a shitload of jade.

Laundered chinese money is big in the bay area as well and is one part of the lovely housing market there. Part of it is indeed due to ownership and inheritance, but a good chunk is flat out just trying to get money out of china in any way possible to some place that it can't be clawed back at any time by the party. There are other schemes as well to get millions out of china in the face of restrictive government policy like bitcoin and casinos in macau, although I seem to recall the party recently cracked down on gambling related laundering.

I'm fairly sure that's the case in the family that bought my house. Family provided the downnpayment on a 700k house with him just working at Starbucks supporting his stay at home wife straight from the province.

my understanding of the chinese buying real estate is that their money in chinese banks isn't secure so they buy real estate because even if they lose money on it its still better than the alternative of sitting in a chinese bank where the government can take it. It's probably some weird by product of china having a first generation of upper/middle class in large numbers other than those in leadership positions in the party.

I knew a girl in college whose parents did that. They bought a huge house in MD and basically abandoned their daughter in a private school there. Like literally enrolled her in school when she was 13, told her to look after the house, and then left and went back to China. As you may imagine, she was an emotional (and alcoholic) mess because of it. Anyway, she finished her PHD in BME at Oxford last year and is doing postdoc work in Germany so I guess everything worked out.
