Karl Barks posted:that cnn money article saying 56% of investors think we've reached the top is probably a good and reliable indication of where we're headed My company paid out a pretty sizable bonus to us at the end of last year to make up for all the years we didn't get one, except they gave it to us in the form of company stock that we can't touch for the next 3 years. Can't wait for it to be utterly worthless by the time I can sell. It's already lost about $500 in value for me.

Minecraft Holmes posted:Doomsday econ from the climate change thread My wife works for a marketing agency in Miami and one of their clients is this company that will do an assessment on waterfront property and give them an estimate of when sea level rise caused by global warming will reach a point that they will start getting flooding so they will know when they need to sell by. But since the only people who own waterfront property are ultra rich and likely ultra conservative the company specified that there cannot be any references to global warming or climate change in the marketing because that might turn potential clients off. So if anyone has any delusions about people finally accepting climate change when it starts affecting them personally, there you go.

Crowsbeak posted:I suspect at this point, most large companies are. I work for a large company and a couple years back our investors demanded that we double our earnings per share. So every department was tasked with either increasing revenue or reducing costs to meet this mark. One of the departments I work with managed to come up with $5 million in additional cost savings, which seemed insane to me because things were already being run pretty efficiently and if there was actually that much in savings to be had they would have come up with it a long time ago. Turns out what they were doing was say someone in the company wanted to order a $10k piece of equipment, but we already had a spare of that equipment sitting in the warehouse, we would ship out the spare and book $10k in savings because you see someone was going to spend that money and then they didn't.

Motels were hotels that were built along the highways (motor hotel) back when driving across the country was a new and novel thing. Over time more hotels were built and motels became less novel and more synonymous with being cheap and run down.
