Months and months of hype for games that never came out Gamecube era also had a lot of teased stuff that didn't quite come out, like the Kirby game that may have ended up as Smash Bros Brawl's story mode. And Twilight Princess being the original BotW delayed to the point of ending up on two consoles. And Mario 128, which I think may have ended up as Pikmin. But when it comes to mainline Mario games at least, Nintendo does not gently caress around.

They are random but generally predictable within a couple of weeks because they update their Japanese website in a way internet detectives have figured out, that Nintendo hasn't caught on people have figured it out yet, so a thread saying "Direct next Thursday?" will always pop up on Neogaf like 3-7 days ahead, and almost always be correct. Nintendo announces them 1-2 days in advance

SMW has Yoshi, which is not that much in itself. But the way the music changes to add a galloping beat when you ride him and the sound effect that plays are powerful and good

Aside from that, it gave us the spin jump, better and more interesting flight mechanics with the cape, a more interactive world map that made replayability MUCH easier, and more expansive and better hidden secrets. SMW innovates on Super Mario 3's formula a TON.
