XCX didn't sell that badly for a Wii U title, and it reviewed fairly well, so I'm not sure what "good will" they've allegedly burned up.

Setsuna, and that other one, they both kinda suck, like, a lot. It's a rehash of FFX with Chrono Trigger elements, and a boring story and setting, but changing the story and setting doesn't make it any better, you know?

There's various factors that contribute to whether cheesecake works well or just comes off as alienating. I think Bayonetta works because it's kind of holistic in its design, everything about the game's aesthetic and narrative and feel ties back to the character's self-assured persona, so having her be very sexually confident ends up as a natural fit with that. Xenoblade 2 is more like, "here's a general fantasy game but also some characters are jerkoff material", which I think comes off much more dissonant and insulting. Also Bayonetta looks like an adult and the XB2 gal doesn't.

I should have mentioned that Bayonetta is a massive outlier in that dept in that it has enough style self awareness to pull it off. the only other game that comes to mind that actually gets away with it imo is Catherine. Anime titillation is definitely an embarrassment.

Who is too embarrassed to play Bayonetta but not blowing off skirts in Nier? Feels like you'd end up on the same side of the fence in both cases there. I don't care either way but I skipped all the cutscenes in Bayo 1+2 and the gameplay itself isn't as suggestive as all that, the "naked under hair" thing is hard to parse with all the other particles on screen. Even stuff like Quiet in MGSV gave us more chuckles at the stupidness of the poses and stuff than Bayo did.

Bayonetta's sexual aesthetic works within the context of the game, and plus she's a grown woman. XB2's characters are mostly kids/late teenagers, and their sexualization comes off as just an excuse for some japanese incel character designer to slap big tits and rear end and exposed gently caress-me-underwear on everything for no reason. It's out of place and context, and because the game already has an anime slant, it's double creepy. Not to mention the vast majority of the game is just going to be wandering through cool looking fields and caves, so the overt sexuality comes off as even more out of place.
