I haven't actually played those Final Fantasies because I only ever had Nintendo consoles growing up, and I hate playing console games on the PC

so I'm psyched to play some old rear end JRPGs

That's because it's not the point of the network test. This isn't the start of the game, you're just plonked into the middle of it to test the network (hence the name.)

As much as people joke about it, the actual game does have a tutorial and ease you into how the game is played

The big thing about the Souls games is to not expect them to play like modern action games. You aren't zipping around and button-mashing, it's all very slow and deliberate and relies on hitboxes and animation timing. It takes a different mindset, and it greatly rewards patience and paying attention. It's not for everyone but really wonderful if you get into it :3:

That actually makes it way more interesting. The real pull in the game for me is the exploration. People keep saying the map is really well designed, and if there was one thing I loved about Hollow Knight it was the map and exploring it. If Dark Souls is anything like that it's the game for me, combat be damned. I can still learn any sort gameplay given the opportunity. You got it! If you loved Hollow Knight then you will surely love it. The story, atmosphere and exploration is what makes Dark Souls so magical and it has this almost nostalgic factor to it. It's really one of a kind, but Hollow Knight did a great job doing a similar thing in 2D (HK is also easily one of my favorite games ever)

You're right about monhun too, it doesn't really have story or exploration and is all about the combat and, well, hunting monsters. That said, a big draw for monhun is how downright charming the games are which you wouldn't get a sense of from the (terrible) demos. They're truly wonderful games filled with adorable characters and cat puns but definitely very different from the atmosphere and exploration-heavy Souls games :v:

The environments in GU (broken by loading screens, aside) are not interesting to explore. Most areas are empty, slightly rearranged arenas for a boss fight.

The environments in World are much better, but I still wouldn't really compare them to Dark Souls.

They're no longer broken up by loading screens, but they're still maps, you know what I mean? That said, they've got a lot more verticality and they're pretty gorgeous :3:

The AC games allow you to adjust the clock from the main screen though, it's really no big deal to change it around.

I know the "intended" way to play the game is by playing a little bit each day but I always liked binge-playing it and going through multiple days in a sitting by adjusting the clock forward as I ran out of stuff to do (and things to buy). :3:
