Trip report: just spent 6 hours playing Overcooked with friends; really great if you have friends over and it's a beautiful mess when there's 4 of you trying to coordinate while another 4 people are watching and trying to be sous chefs like they're Gordon Ramsey (is that what a sous chef does). If Snipperclips is the game to relax with friends, this is the game to get stressed out with them. It's really hectic, and in terms of content, has far more of it than Snipperclips. We only got through about half the game in 6 hours (with some breaks from co-op to play competitive), while Snipperclips took us less than that to 100%. Incidentally, I think the Switch is absolutely the ideal system for this game, since even if you don't have a TV, you're all on one screen and don't have to divvy up space in portable mode.

I can't say if the fun scales down to 2 or 3 players, though, and I'm almost sure it's worthless in 1p.

I like that the ratio of people just calling the game "Mario XCom" against people actually referring to it by its real title is like 9:1 or something.

Does Stardew Valley on PC have fun mods? I'd like to play Stardew on Switch but my policy is to play on PC if there's a strong modding community (eg: Minecraft) or if it's a Bethesda game where you need the debug console just to get out of jams that the bugs put you in.

Just realized something dumb in Mario vs Rabbids. If you want to do co-op but are apparently mid-way through a certain world, you can't go back to the castle without losing your progress for the entire world. It seems pretty dumb and means I can only do co-op after I beat the game, or if I finish a world and wait to start the next one just to do co-op

Do you mean level? I haven't done coop but I travel back to Peach's castle all the time. Progress within a level is reset but you don't go back to the beginning of the world.

I may have asked this before, but does Stardew have a strong modding community? I have it on Steam but haven't played it, and I'm more inclined to sacrifice versatility if it's got a lot of awesome mods a la Minecraft, or if you need to use mods/debug consoles to escape game breaking bugs a la Fallout 3.

I dock and undock frequently; is this problem consistently reproducible on everyone's machines or is it just this guy? That'll kill a Stardew purchase for me until it's patched, I think.

Here's a Zelda tip: print out the map of Hyrule, then play BOTW and never go to the map screen except to turn off the shrine sensor. Then find your way around exclusively by comparing land masses and landmarks against the map, and scribbling on it with an actual pen. Ideally they should just add a toggle that disables the player cursor but since that option isn't there you'll need this workaround.

My Switch arrives today's I'm sitting around the house waiting for the UPS guy like an idiot.

I get to replay through parts of Zelda though and I'm pumped. Any games I absolutely have to get on Switch besides Odyssey?

The only big one I can think of is Mario x Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, which is really good if you think you'll enjoy XCOM with Mario characters and Rabbids (they're not as insufferable as you might expect).

Mario Kart 8 is the same as on the Wii U but getting hit by a blue shell never gets old.

Other games I enjoyed on Switch that I wouldn't say were must-buys: Steamworld Dig 2, Golf Story

If you want to play with friends locally: Snipperclips (2 or 4 players, 3 might be suboptimal), Overcooked (2-4 players, 4 for maximum IRL violence), Jackbox (optimal with 6-8 players)

I do think the problems with BotW became more evident near the end, but it wasn't enough to hamper my enjoyment, and weapon degradation wasn't one of the problems I had--it forced you to save your stuff for meaningful encounters, up until you reached the point where you were getting more weapons than you actually needed. Plus, if your weapons lasted forever, you can bet that every chest would have contained a bunch of useless loving rupees, which would have been far less satisfying.

Changes I'd make: Dungeons (or even just the hardest shrines) should have items that make travel more convenient; imagine having a hookshot, a double clawshot, or a spinner that could actually travel along any climbable wall.

I'd also add more korok puzzle types; 50 or so might sound like a lot of types to add but considering some of them are as simple as "press A on shiny spot", I don't think it's unreasonable to invent that many. I'd keep the number of "for maxing out" koroks in the range of 441, just like what we have now, but I'd lower the inventory space requirements and make the other koroks give you other stuff like maybe unique unfarmable armor upgrade ingredients.

I don't even need proper classic dungeons, but I'd love more that are similar to Hyrule castle, which you can plan looting expeditions to midgame. Also, caves, give me caves!

I haven't bought it and am waiting for someone to confirm one way or another just how substantial these 8 new missions are.

I juggle time between two adjacent apartments so Netflix on the Switch would be great because I'd be able to pick up the Switch and move over to the other apartment and either keep watching on my desk or plop it into the other living room's dock and continue watching; same with potentially using it as entertainment for the treadmill in the downstairs gym. :h: The Switch is the perfect platform for Netflix :h:

I'm surprised that many people are still buying the 3 console New Super Mario Bros. games.

Sales and PR wise, I think Nintendo's first party games have rarely been blockbusters on the level of the AAA titles from devs on other consoles (for example, the new Assassin's Creed seems to have outsold Odyssey in the UK) but what they have--especially the Mario titles--is some pretty unbelievable staying power.

I love BOTW and it's easily still GOTY for me but I get the sense that like Mario 64, it's going to be one of those games that won't age well as Nintendo (and others) refines the gameplay concept down to the things that work, and more people become aware of the problems the original has. I'm pretty excited for the hypothetical Zelda game 10 years from now which will be to BOTW what Mario Odyssey is to Mario 64.

I had that problem too, and I believe someone else in the SMO thread (or this one) expressed the same frustration. Oddly enough, it seems to be specific to Mario Odyssey (for me at least), and just for a select few of us. I've not had this problem with other games.

They added a lynel to the plateau, and sky platforms from which enemies can ambush you, but other than that you're on the mark. If there are any other enemy configuration changes I'm not aware of them.

I like how the main character in Zero Escape: VLR can't stop making cat puns and despite all the plot threads converging into a really insane sci fi yarn, we discover that his tic originates from a completely separate story about a curse from a childhood encounter with magical cats that has absolutely nothing to do with the game.

I believe most unlocks are tied to coin collection. What's tied to the Grand Prix is Gold Mario and a bunch of Gold kart parts.

If 100cc is too Baby Mario for you, you should really try 200cc.

Edit: Also, if online is too easy for you, try to get to a ranking of 3000 or so, at which point the game starts putting you in lobbies with legit good players who will destroy you and where you can't afford to make a single mistake

They gave at least one talk that indicates precisely the opposite of procedural generation; they started with a flat terrain and just started adding more and more elements to it according to a particular design philosophy. There's this whole translated article somewhere that I'm too lazy to find about how they used simple shapes as a foundation to pique as much curiosity as they could from players. As I recall, even the roads in the game apparently represent the areas that got the most foot traffic from the testers.

For me personally, that one shrine puzzle about a giant white bird really convinces me that every bump in the map was placed very deliberately.

Are you thinking of Steamworld Dig 2 (which rules and is a great improvement on the first)? Steamworld Heist is the one that plays like a side scrolling XCOM.

Yeah, I looked it up and it only adds 6 new missions, sadly. Not enough to warrant a double dip from me, but I highly recommend this game if sidescrolling XCOM with bullet ricochets as the primary gimmick appeals to you.

And the loving obvious, they released Dragon Quest 11 in Japan this year.

Man, I'd completely forgotten I had even turned on my PS4 this year to finish FF15 and Automata because I'd spent so much more time on Switch by comparison.

Also, FF12: Zodiac Age and War of the Lions would be perfect on the Switch.
