You can also get referral links from other players. If you register through someones referral link then you get some free skillpoints for your character equal to about 5-6 days worth of training. I suggest saving these skillpoints for a week or so before you use them. Giving you time to get a feeling for what skills matter to you.

If you upgrade to an Omega Clone then the person who's referral link you used to register gets 30 days of Omega clone time as well (worth about $15). If the person isn't a total dick then they will throw some isk your way as thanks. To get a referral link just ask for one in this thread.

What is EVE Online?

EVE is a galaxy wide spaceship MMO where you fly a ship and fire guns/missiles at people who drew your ire or just your attention. You can also do mining, exploration, or perform various types of industry/production activities. Building the various ships and weapons required to fuel the machines of war. Regardless of what you choose to do in Eve, inevitably it contributes to someone somewhere getting their stuff blown up. Conflict is the great driving force in EVE. Ships that die are permanently destroyed and so conflict consumes enormous amounts of ships and materials.

Is it any fun?

Good question. Eve is at its core a terrible game made by a developer that hates the game itself and especially you for playing it. Despite all of this, the EVE community has still managed to turn EVE into a game that can be a lot of fun. The only way to really get any fun out of EVE is to play it with/against other people. People who play EVE tend to be very invested into the game, so I recommend either joining someone else to take part in what they are doing. Alternatively find someone in the process of building something great and tormenting them for giggles by blowing it up or taking it away from them. Which brings me to the next part; PVP.

PVP

PVP in Eve can be a lot of fun. In Eve you fly a ship. You outfit this ship with various weapons and modules that help facilitate spaceship murder. When you "die" your ship is blown up and most/all of the stuff on it is lost. This might sting at first until you realize that the same applies to everyone else as well. Many of them flying ships that are a lot more expensive than yours. There's no respawning at a nearby graveyard and shrugging off your untimely demise. In EVE your ship loving dies and all your stuff is destroyed or collected by nearby players as they mock your failure.

Imagine some outdoor pvp in your garden variety MMO. A level 100-whatever player in his fancy all purple gear looking for an easy fight. He wants to fight you because you are level 1, armed with only a sharp stick and a mean disposition. Except you have ten level 1 friends with you. In Eve a brand new player is a force to be reckoned with. All that fancy gear will not save him. He kills one of you... two of you, before being overwhelmed. You swarm him and beat him to death before stealing his stuff and taking his mangled body back home with you as a trophy.

EVE pvp basically (The horse was fine. They gave it to a nice farmer afterwards)

That's right. In EVE you can collect the corpses of your fallen enemies, with unspoken implications. Except in EVE it's not swords and sticks. It's loving missiles and rockets and bombs and cannon fire and stuff exploding

People losing their minds because they put so much money and time into that ship and it was supposed to be unbeatable and how dare you just bring friends out of nowhere. If it wasn't for your friends he would have won easily

Eve Online: Notable fair fight simulator

subscription types

Eve has two different clone types.

Omega (monthly fee)
Alpha (free to play)

Omega players enjoy the full game as it has always been with all stuff unlocked and full training speed.

Alpha players enjoy an engaging though limited gaming experience. They are locked out of using many of the ships and modules. They also train (level) at half the speed of an Omega clone.

(It's not that bad but Alpha players often find themselves going "Do you have one an Alpha can use?")

I would personally just pay up even for your test run of Eve to get a feel for the full experience.

Ship Types

Size reference chart of Amarr ships. One of the four races in EVE.

Eve has ships that deal damage. Ships that heal (repair) other ships mid battle and ships that provide support roles like electronic warfare.

Damage speaks for itself. Apply murder to the enemy until they are dead.

Logistics (repair) ships repair their allies and help keep them in the fight. Currently eve has small, medium and capital logistics ships but no proper large versions.

Support roles can for example be ships that apply various debuffs to enemy ships to make them less efficient in a fight. Make their turrets have a harder time hitting, slow them down and to make them easier to hit and make it harder for them to escape

Eve ships are split into four different sizes. Small, medium, large, Extra Large (Capital)

Small ships cover things like Shuttles, Corvettes (newbie ships), Frigates and Destroyers. These tend to be fast and agile ships that pack minor firepower. They have the ability to cover large distances of space in a short time. Destroyers are slightly larger than Frigates and

Medium ships are Cruiser and Battlecruisers. Cruisers are mid sized ships. The most popular type of ship in the game with decent speed, agility, tank and firepower. All around very well rounded ships that can perform most tasks. Battlecruisers are larger cruisers. Bulkier and often more heavily armed than a regular Cruiser their size and lack of comparable speed often hampers their combat efficiency when facing Advanced Cruisers. Even if the Battlecruiser might have more "Health" and damage than a regular cruiser

Large ships are Battleships. Flying tanks with massive weapons that can deal incredible damage and absorb a lot of damage. They are however very slow. They also depend on support from smaller ships to operate efficiently. Their weapons have problems hitting smaller targets which can be a detriment in a game where most opponents will be Cruisers. However with a proper support fleet of smaller ships, Battleships are capable of devasting enemy cruiser fleets.

Small, medium and large ships are together known as "subcaps" Sub-capital ships. Ships that are considerably smaller than capital ship.
Capital ships can only be defeated by other capital ships or large amounts of heavily armed subcapital ships.

Extra Large ships are Capital ships. Any ship with a hull weight of half a million tons or more is a Capital ship. They are ridiculously large, powerful and expensive ships with often very specialized purpouses. Even a handful of capital ships are capable of turning the tide of battle. However they are very dependant on support from smaller ships. Or they risk being overwhelmed and gradually pricked to death by swarms of smaller ships. Most capital ships have "Jump drives" which allows them to teleport accross vast distances of space. In order to make this jump they need an allied cynosural field to be lit at the target destination. These jumps require a lot of power as well as fuel and the ship needs to recharge again before it can make another jump.

"The Dreadnought" is an XL-Weapons platforms. They deal about the same damage as ten or more battleships but are stationary when they use their weapons. They can apply a lot of damage to structures and other capital ships. They can also efficiently kill subcap ships if they are supported by subcap ships themselves that can help catch targets for them to fire on.

"The Force Auxiliary" is a Capital logistics ship. Just like the Dreadnought they have to be stationary to operate. They can repair other ships mid fight for amounts that are unmatched. Just as the Dreadnought cane be used to finish off an enemy with with overwhelming firepower. The Force Auxiliary can be used to nullify the damage dealing potential of an enemy fleet through sheer repair power and can so turn a fight and save their allied fleet entirely.

"The Carrier" is a capital ship specialized in destroying subcap ships. It's essentially a space faring aircraft carrier that sends out fighter ships to attack the enemy. They are very good at destroying ships smaller than Capital ships. Though their fighters can be caught and destroyed. If you lose all your fighters then you are defenseless.

"Super Carriers" are larger carriers. They cost about 15 times as much as a Carrier, Deal three times as much damage and easily have ten times as much "Health" They also have heavy fighters that can efficiently deal damage to structures and other capital ships.

"Titans" The biggest and most expensive ships in the game. A Titan can easily cost as much as 30 Dreadnoughts. They are the ultimate weapon that can annihilate capital ships and subcaps alike. They can be equiped with doomsday weapons that can destroy a smaller capital ship in a single hit. Or sweeping beam weapons that can wipe out a whole subcap fleet in a single hit. Like the other capital ships however they depend on support from smaller ships or they too can become overwhelmed and destroyed.

Your ship

The ships in Eve run on (capacitor). Despite all my digging I couldn't find what the source of energy in the capacitor is. We just call it "cap" I guess.

The cap is the big yellow thing and it goes darker as you use up more of it. "cap" is used to run most of the stuff on your ship. If you run out of cap. Things stop working and fail to activate. Up to an including some weapon systems and damage absorption modules as well as propulsion modules that help you fly at greater speeds. The capacitor will recharge slowly on its own. If you dock in a station or citadel the structure will recharge your cap to full. There are also modules that consume charges to give quick boosts of energy to your capacitor.

The three white bars in a half circle are essentially your ships health. It's your "shield" "armor" and "structure"

The shield is self explanatory. All ships have shields. They surround the ship and they are the first layer to absorb incoming damage.
After that is your outer armor that can absorb further damage
Lastly is your structure. This is the inside of your ship, engine, cargo, crew quarters. If the structure bar turns fully red then the integrity of your ship fails and it explodes.

Different ships have different ways to absorb damage. Some ships use the shield mainly and some use the armor mainly. This is called your "tank" Your system of negating damage to your ship. You can also fit a ship to use the structure as main tank but that is very rare and mostly a gimmick. Most ships are built to be either shield or armor tanked. Some ships can use one or the other.

*Agility is your ships ability to maneuver in space. To make quick turns and hit warp drive quickly. Warp drive is the same as in most form of science fiction. Sonic boom and you travel at super speed to a far off destination. It's a good way to travel and a how you escape a fight in an emergency.

Shield

The Advantage of a shield tanked ship is that it permits greater speed and damage. This is because armor plates are heavy and slow you down. The shield equivalent does not. At the same time modules that improve armor goes in the same slot as modules that improve your damage. The shield also slowly regenerates over time but this is negligible on all but the largest capital ships. The downside of shields however is that shields use cap to function. Not to say that the shield drains cap to absorb damage. But modules that help improve your shields performance will in a majority of cases use cap to run. If you run out of cap then your shield becomes greatly weakened and your ability to absorb damage can easily fall by 50-70%. In the heat of battle while under fire this usually means the loss of your ship.

Shields also project a very powerful field around your ship that makes your ship easier to lock on to for enemy sensors. This means that they can acquire a target lock on you faster which means they can start shooting you sooner. Turrets can track and hit you easier. Missiles also have a much easier time to track and hit you for maximum damage if your shield is very strong.

There are weapons in EVE that specifically work to drain your ships capacitor in order to try and disable your ship. These are less common in small and mid sized fleets but the chance of encountering them grows exponentially with the stakes of the fight you are currently in. If the fight has a lot of people and is over an important objective then you will most certainly encounter these types of weapons. They are more likely to be found on capital ships and battleships.

Armor

Armor is historically a very reliable way to tank a ship. You increase the ships "health" by adding armor plates and improving the armors ability to resist various forms of damage. There are a lot of modules that improve on your armor without needing cap to run. This means that if your ship runs dry you can still absorb a lot of damage. Armor does not regenerate on its own but can be repaired in combat. Armor plates are very heavy and will slow down your ship a bit and make it less agile.

Capital ships are mostly armor tanked due to the risk of encountering cap neutralizer weapons in fights with other capitals. The speed penalty also matters less to them. Smaller more nimble ships like frigates will often be shield tanked because speed and agility is what makes them efficient. A slow frigate is a dead frigate. Modules that improve speed and agility also share slots with armor plates and modules that improve armor

[Races]
Eve has four main races. Caldari, Amarr, Gallente and Minmatar. There are volumes of lore on these races and little to none of it has any effect on game play. It only really effects what your pilot will look like and where in the game world you start.

If you're an Alpha clone then your race effects what ships you can fly. Amarr is ill-adviced for an Alpha clone as their weapons use a lot of cap and depend on cap support skills that an Alpha Clone will struggle with.
Minmatar are another poor choice for Alphas as Minmatars use several different weapon systems as well as both shield and armor tanks.
Caldari are a good choice for an Alpha as they have good and uncomplicated ships and weapon systens.
Gallente is probably the best choice for an Alpha as they have very Alpha friendly ships and drones are a very easy weapon system to get the most out of as an Alpha.

Keep in mind that none of this applies if you upgrade to Omega. Omega clone players can use all ships for all races.

[Damage Types]

Eve has four types of damage. Fire, Ice, Lightning and Holy Kinetic, Thermal, Elecromagnetic(EM) and Explosive.

Kinetic is the least desirable damage type. Kinetic weapon systems often have higher base damage than other weapon systems but many ships also have a high native resistance to Kinetic. Boosted further with omni-resistance modules

Thermal is the second least desirable damage type. Like Kinetic many ships will have high or at least average native resists to Thermal

EM damage is by far the most diserable damage type. Ships with a shield tank will often have low or no resistance to EM damage. Players often try to fill this resist "hole" with dedicated modules for that singular purpose. However a low final EM resistance is still common.

Explosive damage is popular because Armor tanked ships will often have low native Explosive resistance.

The result is that when possible players try to switch between EM and Explosive damage to use against Shield or Armor ships respectively.

Different weapon systems will utilize these damage types to varying degrees.
The Amarr Energy Weapon system will do EM and Thermal damage with no option besides those two.
The Gallente/Caldari Hybrid Turret weapon system does Kinetic and Thermal damage. Hybrid weapons will often have very high damage on paper but in reality these two resists are fairly common and Kentic/Thermal resist holes almost non-existant.
The Minmatar Projectile weapon system can to a degree choose what damage they want to deal. All their ammo types do a bit of Kinetic damage but they have short ranged ammo that can deal specific EM, Thermal or Explosive damage.

Missiles are a universal weapon system that is used by all four races to a varying degree.
Missile launchers can completely decide what damage they want to deal by simply switching missiles in the launchers (10 second reload time)
Caldari uses missiles more than the other three races though many Caldari missile ships only have damage bonuses to Kinetic missiles.
Non-Caldari missile ships often use their missile launchers in a secondary role while the ship itself is not meant as a damage dealing ship.

Drones deal damage based on thier race.
Amarr - EM
Gallente - Thermal
Caldari - Kinetic
Minmar - Explosive

The drones also have other strengths and weaknesses but we'll get to that later.

[Weapons]

Eve has a staggering amount of weapons split over three different weapon types and five different weapon systems

Weapon Types

Missiles:
Missiles are fired and will travel towards their target. If the missile is faster than the target and has enough fuel to reach the target then the missile will always damage the target. However depending on the size difference of the missile and the target this damage can be very low if the missile fails to make a good hit. Ships with powerful shields are easier for missiles to track and hit properly.

Turrets:
Turrets are guns on your ship that you use to fire at other ships or structures. They can hit or miss. They can make glancing hits for lower damage or critical hits for immense damage. Their damage is applied instantly as opposed to missiles that only apply damage once the missile arrives at the target. Larger turrets do more damage due to thier larger calibre weapons but the large turrets rotate and aim slower than smaller turrets and so can have a hard time tracking smaller faster targets. Slowing down a small target to the point where a large turret can hit it is a good strategy to wreck enormous damage against smaller ships. Think of it as a speedboat making laps around a Battleship. The battleship can't even hope to turn its guns fast enough to hit the speedboat. But if the speed boat is stationary it will be vaporized.

Drones:
Drones are basically space pets. You launch them from your ship and then order them to attack a target. The obvious downside is that your drones can be fired at, blown up or can be lost if you warp off and leave them behind. If you don't have backup drones then you lose your ability to deal damage. You then have to go buy more drones and for larger ships drones can be expensive. The upside of drones is that they are very reliable and versatile. While large guns have no chance of hitting smaller ships without help. A dedicated drone ship can often bring multiple sets of drones of varying sizes. Allowing the drone ship to reliable apply damage to targets of all sizes

[Weapon Systems]

Missiles

EVE has several advanced formulas to calculate how missile damage works. Near utterly incomprehensable for a new player but a simple way to explain missiles is that missiles have four important stats.
Damage: How much damage the missile does. (Noted in game as "Damage")
Smarts: How clever the missile is at navigating and striking a target in a vulnerable spot for maximum damage. (Noted in game as "Explosion Velocity" and "Explosion Radius")
Speed: How quickly the missile travels towards its target (Noted in game as "Maximum Velocity")
Fuel: How much fuel the missile has. This dictates how long the missile can travel. For example a missile that travels at 10km/s and has 10 seconds worth of fuel has a range of 100 km (Noted in game as Maximum Flight Time)

Larger missiles have large payloads and so do more damage. They also tend to have large engines so they can travel faster as well as more fuel to reach targets further away. They are also really dumb and struggle to hit anything but large and slow targets.

Small missiles are used on frigates and destroyers. They have a very small payload and so do very little damage. They aren't slow but they tend to have very little fuel and so can't reach very far. They are however very smart and can easily hit medium and large targets for maximum damage. They often hit small targets for near maximum damage as well

Missile naming convention works like this:

Scourge: Kinetic damage
Nova: Explosive damage
Inferno: Thermal damage
Mjolnir: EM Damage.

So a "mjolnir light missile" is a light missile that does EM damage. A "Nova rocket" is a rocket that does explosive damage. Possible prefixes can be for example "Caldari Navy Mjolnir light missile" This is a more expensive version of the regular light missile that is better than the regular missile but costs more.

Small Missiles

Light Missiles
Light missiles are small missiles. They do very little damage but have alright range. They have an easy time applying maximum (for their size) damage to targets of most sizes and speeds. They come in three different versions:

Light missile:
average damage
average smarts
average fuel capacity
average speed
All around useful standard light missile

Precision light missile:
average damage
very smart
very low fuel capacity (About 50% less than a regular light missile)
average speed.
Good for hitting small and fast targets at close range, sarifices fuel for increased smarts

Fury light missile:
high damage, (About 40% more than a regular light missile)
somewhat dumb,
low fuel capacity (About 25% less than a regular light missile)
average speed
Sacrifices smarts and fuel capacity for more damage. Good for applying damage to larger targets where smarts aren't needed

Rockets

Rockets are a small missile specialized for attacking small and fast targets at close range. Your ship fires a single missile that splits into a dozen small and very smart rockets that track and hit your target with ease. They deal less damage per "hit" than light missiles but have a higher rate of fire. Giving them an average of +20% damage advantage compared to light missiles. They however have inferior fuel and speed. Rockets are consierably smarter than missiles. Rockets also have lower fitting requirements than light missiles and so give you more options on what other things to fit on your ship. The different rockets are:

Rocket:
average damage (About 20% more than a regular light missile)
average smarts (still considerably smarter than a light missile)
Average fuel capacity (About 60% less than a regular light missile)
average speed. (About 40% slower than a regular light missile)
Standard all purpouse rocket.

Javelin Rocket:
average damage, (about 10% less than the standard rocket)
average smarts
average fuel capacity
fast speed (about 30% faster than the standard rocket)
Sacrifices a little bit of damage for a great increase in speed and so range as well.

Rage Rocket:
high damage, (About 50% more than the standard rocket)
pretty dumb,
average fuel capacity
slow speed (About 16% slower than the average rocket)
Sacrifices smarts and speed for a huge increase in damage. Good against larger slower targets

Okay done writing for today. I'll continue tomorrow when I get home from work.

The old OP was very focused on the goon-schism of '16 (since settled) and it set a very negative tone for new players with rows of threats and warnings. I took those out and I trust the mods to :commissar: troublemakers and the community to self-sanitize where needed.

To do:

Ship sizes and a brief summary of what they do and are like to fly
Very brief lore on the Eve races and how they effect gameplay (and in what ways they don't)
Get a hold of someone from Groon and ask if they want their corp flavor text updated.
Better flavor text for the OP
Various help links.

Maybe a section for news stuff to be updated on a semi-regular basis on what happened recently in Eve for people who don't play the game but want to stay up to date.

So how about those new subsystem bays on T3Cs sized just so to hold 3 spare subsystems? You'll never have an excuse to be without your covops refit again.

And the average of 1 utility high across most of them is nice, really opens up stuff like never forgetting your probe launcher again or always having that max locked targets bonus from Autotargeting systems.
