I thought the classroom was a cool thing. It shows how their whole society is built around this big pit, and they even make their classrooms in its image.

I disagree, as it's the only design that seems to suggest that, making me think it's an exception. Everything else (not directly pit related) about the town's aesthetic seems like a straightforward middle ages town. The wall classroom was only done 1) to point out the orphanage is small/poor, such that they needed to cram more kids into the classroom vertically due to the lack of floor area and/or 2) something creepier.

i don't see much reason for the orphanage to have those desks other than saving space (see: housing kids in former torture chambers), since the climbing experience it gives is minimal. there are definitely aspects of the town that exist because it is over the abyss, but most of the day-to-day residents are there for reasons tangentially related to spelunking. i'd think too many things being abyss-like would be more odd than not, in this case.

Listening to how Rico examined Reg when he was still asleep and his reactions to it were hilarious. From the way she was described, she's very much her mother's daughter.

I really like how they do Reg's extending robo-arm, particularly the sound effects.

Also, this culture is seriously hosed up. "We found the whistle of a hero who died below ten years ago! Time for a festival celebrating adrenaline junkies!"

Edit: The cute cartoons of the side affects from ascending were also amazing.

This show is gorgeous, and I think the art style would make a fantastic 2D/3D sidescroller.

I wish they hadn't included the creepy hogtie shot though.

Speaking of: maybe don't read the manga if you don't want to see creepy and bad depictions of children. I thought episode 1 was basically perfect, and was happy that they excised that tied up bit visually, only to see that they added it in episode 2. So, uh, kind of worried about how they'll handle other stuff!

i love that they (the manga artist) actually think to have riko's ponytails do this, and hope the show animates all the later instances with equal care

I have to agree with this. The manga works in theory, but there's a lot more objectionable content than I can tolerate. If they get rid of the creepy poo poo in the anime, great, but if not then I don't think I can watch this cause it gets worse after episode 2.

Noooooo! But why? It seems like such a lovingly crafted and well-written show. If anything it ruins all of the artists' hard work.

if you want to talk about something you find objectionable in an episode, go ahead. but there's already been enough handwringing about the content in the manga before this even aired, so i don't care to read the nth person vaguely denouncing it. again, we have no idea what the show will or won't choose to adapt, so lets just let it show us before constantly posting worries.

I literally just wanted to warn people about sincerely gross (in the way that scene was gross) content in the manga, because you know, people tend to sometimes read the manga if an anime adaptation is interesting. Hopefully they don't adapt the rest of that poo poo, yes, and going on and on about it would be pointless, but not mentioning it at all seems odd, especially when we've seen that, in this episode specifically, they aren't shying away from it entirely.

your post isn't really the problem. i just don't want people to pile in after it thinking it's a pass to whine about what they don't like in the manga regardless of its inclusion in the anime.

I assume you saw a gif of the 1 second long scene in the middle of the "daily orphanage life" montage.

Anyway the answer to your question is not at all but thankfully it was a 1 second scene in the middle of a montage.

This is a show where the death of the cave raiders is celebrated and children are trained to die the same way as their parents, and it's all done with a side-eye from the audience. You really think that the scene where a prepubescent child (drawn as a blob with limbs) was being punished was supposed to be arousing?

Yes.

There's a difference between expressing ideas which are conceptually messed up, and the display of such things in a purely gratuitous manner that do nothing to really underscore the point other than to just show it to the viewer.

I'm pretty sure it was supposed to show how hosed up their lives are (and that they don't really notice), but sure, we can go with "split second of nudity in a show where there are no panty shots is supposed to be fanservice."

As the montage started my wife and I were having a conversation about what was happening in the plot, and as it flashed over the screen I was mid-sentence and just started to slow down my words, like applying the brakes for a stoplight, and we both just look at each other and said simultaneously "...wait, what? did you just see..." and we played it back to make sure we weren't crazy, and I couldn't wait to read some meltdowns in the thread.

This show has an extremely unique and neat setting and is incredibly pretty overall. Hoping they can keep up the quality.

If anyone can answer without spoiling too much: how is it possible that there are "foreign" cave raiders down there? It looks like the town surrounds the whole Abyss, so why don't they just tell any foreigner who wants to go in to go pound sand?

The circumference of the Abyss is pretty large, and there are slums and such that border the edge. It wouldn't be too hard to sneak or get smuggled in.

Also if she really is the daughter of the amazing cave diver, and is an incredible case-study of what happens to someone born below the surface, how come she ended up at this last-resort orphanage? Like, really? No one was available to take her in? No next of kin, not even some government or organization that wants to study her, nothing?
