I've done a similar trip a little over a year ago, but we did go further south. I wouldn't call the Kalahari boring. I mean it's a desert, but I thought it was fairly interesting.

Fish River Canyon is one you can safely skip if you've seen other large canyons. Yes, the view is impressive, but there is really nothing else that's interesting for hundreds of miles around it.

I did like Kolmanskop / Lüderitz a lot. It's a really unique place. One of the things that special is the huge difference in climate between the coast and the desert. You can drive 60 miles and see the temperature go up or down by 40 degrees. But then again you'll experience the same thing in Swakopmund.

One other tip: watch out for "fake" tourist attractions. We drove through an area where there was supposed to be a famous petrified forest. We thought we'd check it out so we followed some signs by the side of the road. Once we got there we thought is was awfully quiet but only halfway through the "tour" did we realize that this was just some dude who started his own "petrified forest". We had a good laugh about it afterwards.
