So Chester Bennington killed himself this morning

i always thought linkin park's amateurish songrwiting was a dead giveaway that chester was not actually depressed and just sang that poo poo to tap into a market.

never liked the band at all but now i feel bad for wrongly talking so much trash about how fake their angst was. depression sucks and suicide is not the way anyone should go ever.

Deftones are still doing well

the last debatably nu metal record deftones recorded was white pony so i dunno that they count as a nu metal band that survived. even their nu metal days sound pretty markedly different from the bands that followed them. chino was always a much better singer and abe a much much better drummer than the artists that came to typify the genre, and they moved pretty deliberately away from nu metal specifically to not be lumped in with the garbagemen who aped deftones (and fnm's angel dust). i can't imagine someone listening to koi no yokan and then listening to like, papa roach and saying 'yeah this is basically the same genre'.

also post grunge is just the worst music. nu metal was so cheesy that i always found it hard to hate even if i never liked it. post grunge though, that poo poo is just the worst and it seems like it's all modern rock stations play (well, that and actual grunge since they're so tapped for anything worth putting on the air that they have to play alice in chains and nirvana on their ostensibly 'modern' stations).

That's why I've always been a little put off by the refrain of Crawling being used to mock people. I mean I get it from the perspective that the lyrics are immensely dramatic as is the delivery, but seriously who are we as a society that we think something like that is rife for mockery?

Oh right, The Internet. :sigh:

speaking as someone who has battled severe depression and at times been suicidal, the lyrics to crawling were mockable because they sounded fake to me. like an adult trying to approximate awkward teen poetry or something. also depression to me sounds more like the cure's pornography, not loud power chords with screaming.

recent events obviously change this perception.

Yeah, that explanation makes more sense to me as to why I never liked them. Like, I like NIN, but a lot of NIN stuff is on the same lyrical level as Linkin Park. It works for me though because of the chaotic and hosed-up soundscape that goes with those lyrics. This is the same reason I view Pornography as the best musical representation of what depression feels like, since that album is decidedly ugly to an almost unlistenable degree.

as poo poo as nu metal is, even the worst cannot hold a candle to how bad the average post-grunge band is. i feel safe in saying it's the worst genre ever.

I like the Deftones cover of Cocteau Twins Wax and Wane

abe's drumming in this :swoon:

deftones are insanely good at covers. they even managed to be like the only band that covered the cure and weren't dogshit at it, prolly since chino takes a lot of vocal inspiration from robert smith.

Deftones don't count as nu metal :colbert:

Actually back when I was reading music magazines in the ATF - S/T era I saw them referred to as nu metal, emo, alt rock and post hardcore at different times. But yeah their cover of Sade's No Ordinary Love is great too.

as mentioned, white pony was where they really departed from nu metal and solidified that move away from the genre with the s/t album. they were very important in forming the genre however.

I felt like their self titled was a step back. maybe not necessarily in terms of genre but more in terms of the songwriting was just really weak. I still listen to their old albums but always skip that one

the s/t is my favorite album of theirs, followed by diamond eyes

no idea, they released that one song two years ago and nothing since. considering chino is busy with a billion different things at all times, between touring/writing with deftones, doing the same with his other 3 bands, and featuring on a shitload of other people's songs, i'd guess it's prolly hard to schedule sessions with the other members of saudade especially as many of them are also active with other projects.

i do hope we get more stuff from them, that one song was pretty cool.

For what it's worth, I've always liked the Orgy cover of Blue Monday. I have the album it's on, it's not too bad.

orgy's cover of blue monday is fine in a vaccuum, the issue is it has the original to compete with and the original completely demolishes it.

for what it's worth, that cover is what got me into new wave, being a kid growing up with parents who listened pretty much exclusively to the modern rock of the 90s, so i appreciate orgy's cover of blue monday for that if nothing else. also candyass and vapor transmission are both pretty good albums (dear god don't listen to anything they did after that though)
