Discussing pay is legal at the federal level, a bunch of states have outlawed or are currently working on bills that make it illegal to ask candidates about their pay at previous places of employment prior to negotiating comp, etc. I can even say from personal experience that talking to recruiters 5 years ago was very different than just within the last month or two - back then, I had recruiters flat out tell me on an initial screen that they needed to see a previous W-2 to determine compensation before we could move to next steps (yes, they got told to gently caress off). Last few times I've talked comp with potential employers, they ask me what I'm looking for - in which case you're right, you have to be prepared. What's funny is that employers may eke out additional profit by driving down wages, but they're hurting themselves in the process and it's the same issue that restaurants have. The BBQ joint paying $10/hr to BOH is going to have a much harder time filling jobs than the pizza joint paying $12.50 because hey, employees chase the money. And then those same managers/owners bitch about not being able to find good help.

I have July 1-10 off from the hospital. I have to get the "you're on the schedule for the 6th and 7th" sorted out though because I will NOT be in town. And will not be driving 3 hours back to work those shifts. I would be beyond peeved if I have to do that.

The absolute worst case scenario is I call off. Which I've only done once in my nearly 5 years here. I'm working on getting it sorted out though. Best case scenario is I swap a weekend with one guy, he just hasn't gotten back to me yet with an affirmative. Then I have other options if he can't. But yeah there is no way in hell this bitch is driving her rear end back to work two shifts while I'm already busy. I definitely have prior engagements those days, and they knew WELL in advance that I won't be available. I scheduled it back in October. This is my one real vacation this year. The other time off I took since my last vacation was for moving out/into my apartment.

You told them you needed this time off, they said yes, then scheduled you still. As a kind person you should let them know that you still won't be there, but you don't owe them anything beyond that. Assuming you aren't stealing from the till and you aren't such a drug addict that you no call no show constantly, restaurants very, very rarely fire anyone.

Moving along in my trek through central Texas kitchens, I'm now a line cook at a big truck stop restaurant, which is slower than you'd think. New boss bought me new work boots on my first day, which was awesome and apparently commonplace. She's this wiry older lady with grown kids who cusses like a sailor and has absolutely no whatsoever, it's refreshing. My brother-in-law keeps telling me it's so easy to get promotions etc with the company, but I just spent a year trying to convince a stubborn, turbo-cheap first-generation Chinese man I was capable of running the restaurant I'd been running all along at $poo poo/hr (yes, I should have quit a long time ago) I just wanna cook for right now tbh

Well, it WAS with a note that if it was my weekend to work I'd need to get it covered. It hasn't been an issue the past few years because I was always off that weekend in the past. This was the first year it's been an issue. I just assumed I put in my request well enough in advance that I wouldn't have to put in the legwork and they'd be able to sort it out. There was one guy who was going to cover it, but he said he would then ended up quitting like 2 months later so . But that was the worst case scenario. It's sorted out though. I'll be covering another ladies (C) weekend that she needed off in August, and she'll do the 5am room service shift my weekend, and the other new guy, M (not the guy who quit, and not the one I was waiting to hear back from. He, we'll say S, has his birthday stuff that weekend so whatev) will do my 11:30 shift. It's a little convoluted, but it works out in the end really. I just was reticent to ask C because honestly she's kinda intense/scary. That and I kinda peeved her off a little, but I'm dealing with HRT hormones hitting the point where I've got the emotional stability of a teenage girl atm. And I can't really explain what's up there *yet* at work. I've told two people so far who've been chill. I'm just not ready to tell management about that. So, it's a little messy, but it worked out in the end. And that's what matters most. And I'll be able to enjoy myself with no issues. Plus I end up having this coming weekend off anyways to finally sleep some before the con. I can vent a little. I like M, he's a good guy, very competent. S is...well he's alright-ish, but he just stresses me a bit. He does this "hey you should be doing this" thing when like, I know dude. I've been here about 5 years now, I know what I'm doing. That's a drat fine last line, hah. Yeah like, I sorta trained the guy. He mostly learned from the one other guy who used to do the 11:30-8 shift though who's kinda really a dick too. He moved over to the dish room for whatever reason. I trained M some as well, he hasn't cooked for a living for I think he said a decade or more, he was a computer toucher. But he's far more competent and willing to listen when I have input, and even asks when needed. There's also another lady, Ms P, she's Thai and also pretty competent and has gotten a lot better since day one. She listens and asks. And I can commiserate with both of them, M especially, but I like working with them. Two more days of work, and then I have 12 glorious days off.... and I have another therapist appointment before my vacation, then the followup at the clinic after. Monday was my 2 month HRTversary.

Working at a hospital has it's benefits. I'm sitting on 186 hours (23.25 days) of PLT, the con will take like 48-56 hours of that. Our baker guy took the whole month of June off to go back home to India. Plus reviews are coming so I have arguments to make that I'm worth at least 15/hour. I'm at 14.31 currently. And come the end of the year, since I don't go on a lot of trips. I'm cashing out two weeks of PLT for just straight "here ya go, here's an extra 1200 minus taxes" which will be nice. It's just lame I have like, a 1500 deductible for mental health stuff (ie, therapist for sorting out gender stuff then woo this visit I get to tell her "so like, I have feelings now but I know what's up so it's draining. But also validating.) So that's less fun, but I can do it. So thanks.

It's a nice perk to selling your soul and working for a casino. Hello. I wash dishes at a pub/tapas joint (two restaurants, one kitchen). I was out of work for over three years after having to establish that I have a disability (the Tism). It's only like 20 hours a week but I'm feeling so much better about myself now that I have a job and a couple extra dollars a month. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Lol, my restaurant is back in the SF Chron Top 100 despite Bauer literally calling my boss to try to get me fired last year when I criticized him for including rapists & wage thieves on his list. In other news, today is also the day I drop Four Roses from all my accounts because they hosted an event here in SF at a loving Chiarello restaurant. Ironically, the restaurant who's inclusion I was criticizing this time last year.

I feel like you’re probably doing something right if Bauer is/was trying to get you fired. What a turd. I can only imagine how much more interesting the SF dining scene could have been without him sandbagging menus for 15 years. Not that menus now are boring, just that a better critic probably could have pushed things even farther forward.
