![]() ![]() ![]() What is this? The Sexy Brutale is a bit of a murder mystery game that came out in April 2017. It runs a little chunky in spots, maybe not the best optimization, but it is rather charming! Playing as somewhat of a mix between Ghost Trick and Majora's Mask, the game follows the fate of ten guests at the titular casino during the annual masquerade ball. Things don't seem quite right however, what with the staff killing off the guests and all. Over the course of 12 repeating hours, we'll discover the truth behind the murders and the Full-House Staff, and hopefully save a few lives along the way. What has happened at the Sexy Brutale? Who is the bloodied woman? And where is the Marquis in all this? Since this game is extremely story based and there's a lot going on, I'm planning on doing a subtitled LP. I'll try to keep my commentary minimal to explain things and otherwise let the game speak for itself. It's my first time going about that so if anything is unclear or needs fixing, please let me know. Generally I'll be following the victim(s) around to show their movements. Then I'll follow the murderer to see how they've done it. Finally we'll figure out how to prevent their untimely demise. The game is not very long but it is extremely story based. ![]() ![]() Videos! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() dscruffy1 fucked around with this message at 17:30 on Aug 8, 2017 |

I saw this on the Steam sale but decided against it because backlog. Happy to see it played. I'm assuming the murders will become more Rube Goldbery eventually?

Arg, I really, really wanna play this but haven't been able to find room in my extremely limited game budget to buy it yet... On one hand, I wanna watch this LP because your LPs are always excellent. But on the other, I get the feeling this is a game best experienced unspoiled.

This game caught my eye, so I'm glad to see someone LP it. Wasn't expecting another LP from you so soon Scruffy.

If you want to play it and experience it for yourself, this would be an excellent jumping off point. The first chapter doesn't get too deep into much of anything aside from being a nice taster, but you will absolutely be spoiled on the story and this game is all story.

This sounds like a pretty good game (and the music sounds plain awesome). Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

drat, lp sniped, but ah well, makes my life easier. If people are interested in any of the artbook or prequel comic I can post some of it, along with various other arty bits I have lying around spare now. Don't want to be presumptuous, but if I can save you some work I will.

I am here because this game has gorgeous music and I like it and I have no intention to play it. Maybe will buy it to support creators, but never play.

I only got the Steam copy so I didn't get any of the physical swag. If It won't overly spoil anything I wouldn't mind seeing the comic book, I imagine the artbook has a sketches of characters and...things we'll be seeing further in.

No worries, it would have been my first lp, so starting off with something less complex might be wise. The comic is a bit spoilery, it has character designs we've not seen yet, as well as covering Lucas winning the casino from Boone in a gambling match, and the casino losing money already so I might leave that till later. The artbook definitely has spoilers, but I was planning on cropping stuff out and showing only the people/things we've seen already, so I can do that here too if that's cool. For example, some Lafcadio Boone art, (laff-cah-dee-oh, it's Greek) ![]() ![]() I like the one on the left best, he looks more like priests you actually see in England, (where the game is ostensibly set despite the whole casino-mansion thing being about as American as you can get) though apart from the crossing himself when he hides Boone being a priest doesn't come up much anyway. And the mask looks more like the handprint was accidental, the one we ended up with he'd have just been wandering round with a blank white one all night if not for the murder and strange ladies and what-not. (If any of that's too spoilery for your tastes let me know and I'll delete it, same with any of the others in future) Graylien fucked around with this message at 10:11 on Jul 19, 2017 |

I'm getting wee bit Ghost Trick vibes from this. I approve of time interference shenanigans. Definitely approving of your choice of going with subtitles for commentary. I doubt there's much actual talking going on in this game but the sound and music design is pretty great so far, and I am sure things will only pick up from there. Thanks for giving this game a run!

This had popped onto my radar, but not enough to buy it myself. After watching your first video, though, I decided that I had to buy the game immediately. I've been a big fan of time-travel puzzles ever since Life is Strange (and Ghost Trick, whichever one I played first).

Personally I kinda expected to hear ya in the intro and outros, with subtitles over the gameplay, but if you're doing all subs definitely bump the text location up just a bit. Looks like an interesting game, and the musical cues lining up with events are great.

So I played through the whole game and thought this segment was neat. Then near the end I stumble onto the conversation that Trinity is blind. I should have seen it coming. All the signs were there. It ruined a neat character for me sadly as it went from "Huh neat!" to "Oh another stereotype. Yay."

NHO posted:Death robot dealer tries to prevent deaths. Ironic. I can only speak for my PC but I think I'm either under specs or there's too much going on at once, the game stutters in a few places like loading new rooms etc. Could be because everything in the mansion is always happening whether you're there or not, it's a lot to keep track of. I can't say the stuttering is going to get any better, unfortunately.

Man, I mentioned the music in the first video, but it's even better here. Does it change like that based on just the time, or is it because you're watching someone's doom? Either way, I adore it.

This game is super sweet, although not very long - not that it needs to be any longer. It wraps itself up very nicely at the end.Graylien posted:For example, some Lafcadio Boone art, (laff-cah-dee-oh, it's Greek) Interestingly, there has been approximately one (1) person of any significance in history to have ever had that name, and that's Lafcadio Hearn a.k.a. Koizumi Yakumo, a 19th century Greek-British journalist and writer who eventually emigrated to Japan and wrote several very famous books on Japanese ghost stories (most famously Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things). I can only assume the people behind this game were well aware of him, as some minor throwaway references later in the game indicate.

VolticSurge posted:Are you gonna keep whining like this for the rest of the LP? I hope not. One critique on a stereotype is whining. Sure. I could go into why or why not this might be justifiable in the game, but that's spoilers right now. I could talk about why I like the game, what it does well, what it does poorly and the like, but once again spoilers. I'm trying hard not to say anything to ruin the plot. We hit the one point in the game that was a huge disappointment to me personally because I missed the very start of the conversation until near the end of the game and everything snapped together. You called it whining but... blind person has incredible hearing is a well worn trope. It's about the only characteristic blind people get in most media. I thought maybe she had super hearing for other reasons. I also think she reacts to visual cues in the spider room. Outside the start of the conversation where the braille cards are brought up there's very little that's solidly hinting she's blind. That's both a good thing and a bad thing. It was easy to miss her cane. However, now that I know it's there it's well done. I do like how she notices the drink tray at the beginning. I still swear she jumps at the sight of the spider. Overall I like the game. It does it's thing well. You want positives? The tutorial does the job of setting things up and teaching the basics quite well. I think the variety of deaths are interesting. The sick humor throughout makes me smile (the pick your poison bar for instance). The little details on how things flow together fit nicely. We saw some of this in the last video where Trinity stops when she hears the gunshot. You know what the gunshot is. Even the worse puzzle of the lot (IMO) has decent in game justification. Really don't know what I did to piss in your cheerios, but one post in the thread complaining about one specific thing and saying it hurt because I missed the confirmation and had come up with alternative and reasonable explanation beyond that? That's not a tidal wave of whining here.

I like this game so far. It's got charm and seems solidly built. I keep being reminded of Ghost Trick, who I presume the developers might have been inspired by. Shame about the stuttering, but then, this might just be the kind of game I decide to invest in myself, especially if, as mentioned, it has a solid ending to go with all the build-up.

They were awfully blasé once they took their masks off about the dead body lying on the ground behind them. But then, it seems that when someone takes the mask off they kind of forget everything that just happened and return to a happy-go-lucky state.
