What is this?
The Sexy Brutale is a bit of a murder mystery game that came out in April 2017. It runs a little chunky in spots, maybe not the best optimization, but it is rather charming! Playing as somewhat of a mix between Ghost Trick and Majora's Mask, the game follows the fate of ten guests at the titular casino during the annual masquerade ball. Things don't seem quite right however, what with the staff killing off the guests and all. Over the course of 12 repeating hours, we'll discover the truth behind the murders and the Full-House Staff, and hopefully save a few lives along the way. What has happened at the Sexy Brutale? Who is the bloodied woman? And where is the Marquis in all this?

Since this game is extremely story based and there's a lot going on, I'm planning on doing a subtitled LP. I'll try to keep my commentary minimal to explain things and otherwise let the game speak for itself. It's my first time going about that so if anything is unclear or needs fixing, please let me know. Generally I'll be following the victim(s) around to show their movements. Then I'll follow the murderer to see how they've done it. Finally we'll figure out how to prevent their untimely demise.

The game is not very long but it is extremely story based. :siren:Don't spoil anything if you know what's coming up.:siren:

I've got some time so I figured I ought to go ahead and get started on it before theater season starts up again. :v:

Arg, I really, really wanna play this but haven't been able to find room in my extremely limited game budget to buy it yet... On one hand, I wanna watch this LP because your LPs are always excellent. But on the other, I get the feeling this is a game best experienced unspoiled.

If you want to play it and experience it for yourself, this would be an excellent jumping off point. The first chapter doesn't get too deep into much of anything aside from being a nice taster, but you will absolutely be spoiled on the story and this game is all story.

drat, lp sniped, but ah well, makes my life easier. If people are interested in any of the artbook or prequel comic I can post some of it, along with various other arty bits I have lying around spare now. Don't want to be presumptuous, but if I can save you some work I will.

Dang, now I remember someone else had been interested in doing this. Slipped my mind.

I only got the Steam copy so I didn't get any of the physical swag. If It won't overly spoil anything I wouldn't mind seeing the comic book, I imagine the artbook has a sketches of characters and...things we'll be seeing further in.

Should I bump them up a few blocks or...? It's my first time really doing subtitled stuff so I'm open to any feedback.

So this video will still have the subtitles pretty near the bottom but it's early enough that I ought to be able to bump them up from here on.

You video kinda stutters near the end, annoying.

I can only speak for my PC but I think I'm either under specs or there's too much going on at once, the game stutters in a few places like loading new rooms etc. Could be because everything in the mansion is always happening whether you're there or not, it's a lot to keep track of.

I can't say the stuttering is going to get any better, unfortunately.

I feel like I can unfortunately shoot this one in the foot. While everyone will get saved at the end, it's not possible to do it all in one run. There's too many things that require a hands-on touch at different points in very different areas to make it happen.

VKing posted:

Man, I mentioned the music in the first video, but it's even better here. Does it change like that based on just the time, or is it because you're watching someone's doom?

Either way, I adore it.

I believe the music changes based on the area you're in. The Casino is the place you'll get the biggest feel of everything happening at once, and it's probably designed that way. Each area has a fairly unique theme based on local events. You'll still hear various events take place, such as the gunshot and the electrical shortage, but the music is pretty dynamic to different areas. That might be another reason for the stuttering, the music is fairly tied to the time and the location you're in. If you move between areas, the game has a fast-load both the music for that specific time and the events that happen therein. It's not quite seamless but they do their best!

Two things I internalized but never actually confirmed: Is every room with a clock in it never going to have a person walk through it?

And can you not get chased by a flaming mask if the person is in the same room but at a different altitude (like on a walkway above the room)?

Every clock room will always be safe to stay in.

Different elevations generally count as different rooms. See: the main entrance, a staff member passes by on the second floor.

Tasteful Dickpic posted:

The dynamic music is quite nifty, but the transitions are really abrupt. There could have been more of a fade into each new track, even though that'd have been more expensive. It gets really obvious when you're looking through a keyhole into a new room, and suddenly there's a new song blaring at you.
It's obvious they tried to do as little loading screens as possible but the jarring music does have an effect. They were pretty ambitious with the design and having everything happen at once!

As for #1: Tequila's death happens far before Greyson's death.

For #2: No. Examining the egg just shows it's beautiful. I'll probably have a description for the next video.

it also completes the circle/closes the loop of the game's plot on a more surface-level literal way too. It didn't occur to me until afterwards that the timer for the bomb is the exact same pocketwatch we've been using all this time. That's presumably what Sixpence is frantically searching the safe in chapel for, and why he goes: "LUCAS WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!" The synchronised clocks Sixpence invented are being used as the timers for the explosion. It's also why the pocket watch is all broken and burnt up at the beginning. (Looking back at the first video, Lafcadio never actually retrieves the pocket watch from the Chapel, it's handed to him by the bloody girl.) It's literally the bomb timer that was half blown-up by the explosion.

Oh heck I think you're right about the pocketwatch.

The game does a whole lot of that sort of thing, with the Waiting Room description, the ghost playing the organ, lots of things pointing back to the beginning. Jeez that's real frickin' neato.

I still have a few more things to do, like add in more room descriptions into the second post (there's still a few left) but this will be the last video. Thanks for watching! I'm going to take a little break before starting the next LP (not starting it immediately after finishing like this one) because it's a bigger endeavor but this was a nice short one and it was really fun.

So what about that room that had all the floating cards and the whirlpool in it? Or is that something you're leaving for us to discover ourselves?

There's a room entry for that you can get from Thanos' mask power(I think?), but it doesn't illuminate too much. You need to pick up certain cards to make a bridge to the other side, which has a card. The room entry might be unlocked by grabbing that card, now that I think about it.

Now that we've seen everything I wanted to ask: How do you unlock entries in the Secrets part of the journal? I got pretty much 100% of everything, all the room descriptions all the cards, the addiction ending, etc... But nothing unlocked there. Did I miss something?

Really? I'm not sure how they're unlocked. I'd guess by finishing the story but if not that, then finding cards and Thanos' mask usage. If those don't unlock it then I'm not really sure what does.

Speaking of those secret entries, those and all the other entries are in the second post now.

Glad to hear people enjoyed the art posts, I've certainly enjoyed the thread and reading everyone's speculation and analysis. Anyway, here's the last bonus; the origin comic that shows how Lucas and Lafcadio first met.

That's not really what I expected but doesn't have as many spoilers as I would have expected either. You could guess at Lafcadio still being a guest even if he lost the casino on a bet. Either way, thanks for all the art and comic posts! I'm gonna toss them in the second post as well.
