The Chainsmokers = garbage I want to talk about/share EDM. More specifically, music that just gets labeled as EDM rather than house/electro/dubstep/techno/trance/drum & bass/etc. Other subgenres of electronic music have their threads in NMD, but I’m not sure this type of stuff gets discussed in those threads or in NMD at all. Before you say it: I know this type of music isn’t for everyone, but it’s been hugely popular for many years for a reason and I want somewhere to talk about it and share it. I’ve been going to EDM shows/festivals for years, and the feeling of being in a crowd like that (especially a sold out one) with hundreds/thousands of people all getting into the music and dancing together is unparalleled for me. Being connected to EDM feels like being part of an inclusive and welcoming family for me in a way that many other genres do not. It's the same way for a lot of newer rappers.

The biggest problem SC had is that it never took advantage of its biggest asset and that was the artists it helped create. They could have done so many things with their independent artists like release exclusive content that would have actually provided something of value that customers might actually pay for. As it is now, no one is going to pay for a streaming service with limited content, especially when the content it is missing is the most popular.

This is literally exactly why I said in the OP that I know it’s not for everyone but it’s popular for a reason lol I know EDM isn’t everyone’s bag. Hell, a lot of my friends think all EDM is garbage and don’t even bother to check most of it out. But there are a lot of people who don’t have that attitude and enjoy listening to music that’s fun as gently caress and gets you hyped up even if it might not be the most artsy poo poo in the world, and that’s the type of stuff I want to share/discuss. Although after posting this thread, I realized that I don’t know how many people on SA would actually be into this kind of thing...

The point I am trying to make is that Rezz didn't "destroy" deadmau5 and she certainly isn't doing anything more technical than he is, its just the set she plays is way more your style of music. I am trying to get you to distinguish between technical proficiency at DJing and the "set". You saying that he isn't capable of putting on an exciting show without visuals is again 100% subjective and probably has to do in large part to the track selection for his mixes vs. his real shows.

I have a hard time believing that a deadmau5 "cube" show was boring AF, unless the music just isn't your thing. I have seen the cube twice and it is hands down one of the best shows I have ever seen. Dude definitely could do better with someone else on vocals. They're all super processed too, kinda feels like he's unconfident in them. Few EDM producers are 'great' singers, but the good ones know their limits (like Madeon or Rob Swire)

This saddens me as Pretty Lights was one of the first shows I ever went to and it was awesome. I thought Color Map of the Sun was a GREAT album but he has been super quiet on releasing any music since then.

My dude, I think you just like gesaffelstein dark down tempo stuff more than you like deadmau5's style of progressive stuff. Separate the show experience out from the music here. Rezz plays pretty much the same set every where she goes, mau5 does the same, because they both play mostly their own music (which is what people have paid to see). Deadmau5 strings together his popular tracks, rezz does exactly the same. For me? Rezz is probably a lot of fun but I don't feel that there is much range in her style. Doesn't even compare to the likes of Strobe. Highly recommend checking labelmates enzo bennet, no mana and draft. Forward thinking progressive, a new twist on edm and a sound palette not really found in the genre belong to each respectively.

I wouldn't say I don't enjoy deadmau5's style. I've enjoyed his studio stuff for several years now, and I enjoyed the first time I saw him a great deal. I just don't think his style translates well to a live environment all by itself, I guess. If it's the full A/V sensory overload package? Then yeah, I love it. But if it's just him without any real stage presence then it bores me to tears. Any of Rezz's tunes get me pumped literally every time I listen to them, whether it's in my car or at home without any visual accompaniment. Some of deadmau5's tracks do that for me too (like all of 4x4=12, Strobe, I Remember, etc.), but most of those songs are at least 5 minutes long (if not double that) and there's a lot of buildup in them. Personally I enjoy progressive stuff (hell, post-rock is one of my favorite genres so it's not like I'm averse to long songs with lots of buildup), but Rezz's tunes have no padding whatsoever. They just get right to the loving point and I feel like they work better for the whole EDM live environment by and large. Obviously mau5 has a few of those too, but that makes up, what, 15 or 20 minutes of an hour and a half long set?

I was fortunate enough to see his "With Teeth" show a few years back and it was one of the best shows. I also checked out his Drum n Bass alter-ego Spor in San Francisco which was a lot of fun. His sound design is really unique and interesting and he covers a very wide range of genres from dubstep to progressive house. I mean Feed Me was one of 3 people that deadmau5 asked to remix Strobe so that should tell you something about his talent.

I like rising and falling energy levels, complex builds and clever little details. Matt Lange's 'My love aside' is a great example of one of these smart tracks. E: actually we have a drum and bass duo over here called sigma who are a bit like this. They make a bunch of radio friendly drum and bass but by far and away the most fun tracks of theirs to listen to live are the ones that wouldn't work on the radio or in a personal listening environment. RE Feed Me. His drum and bass days means he knows how to make really interesting patches, and that can make his stuff super fun to listen to for me. I do think it can be a touch abrasive though too, little too much grit and hiss for my tastes sometimes. NOISIA are probably the best overall sound-designers in that space, but Jon Gooch (feed me / spor) is still my fave. I love how he takes cliches and re-imagines them to be totally fresh. He might borrow from other styles, but there's always something really original about the way he spins them. He did Rat Trap and it doesn't sound like anyone else, despite firmly being a 'trap' song. Same as his dubstep/electro has common elements, but such a distinct flavour. I don't think anyone could really do what he does.

I feel like in Electronic Music, it is harder than most genres to have a distinct sound. Part of that is due to the lack of vocals which are usually the way someone recognizes a song, but also due to the fact that so many of the elements are written on a computer instead of recorded by a live musician. When recording a musician, you will never hear two takes that will be exactly the same whereas with electronic music, every take could sound exactly the same if you wanted it to. Being able to literally think up and execute new and unique sounds is something I am very jealous of but then again, Feed Me is pretty much an artistic genius where I am....not that.

Thanks for starting up this thread! I remember looking for a similar thread a while back and surprised there wasn't really anything. I'll have to listen to all the links posted in here. I'm an awful person who's still really into trap and future bass, and I've been gravitating more towards the slower, melodic stuff lately. I've listened to the Ekali Awakening Mix Vol. 2 way too many times at this point, and I'm still not sick of it. Ekali did a really amazing job with it, and he maintains the right vibe throughout the mix. Beyond that, I've been listening to a lot of Jai Wolf, and I'm excited to see him again here in a couple of weeks.

I've been wanting a thread like this in here for a while but was far too lazy to make one, thanks OP. Happy that Bassnectar made it in there as well. Love his stuff, first started listening in 2009/10ish and first saw him at a tour stop in 2011 in a sweaty rear end nasty club. I'm not one of those "follow Bassnectar everywhere he goes" types, but if he's at a festival I am, believe I'm at his set over anyone else. This year's NYE 360 was the first of his curated events I've seen and I was blown away.
