in this story, goku is just an especially strong farmer who has to defeat an evil cow that's rampaging through his crops. can he do it?? the show expects you to be asking this question even if you think you know the answer!!

Yeah, canon is genuinely overrated and stifling as a concept, especially once a story's long past its original expiration date.

I always felt like the future Trunks timeline could have been a good avenue for some sort of soft reboot/continuation (at least until Goku Black put a cap on it). Trunks has rid the Earth of Cell and the Androids, he knows there are other Dragon Balls in the universe, and Majin Buu was still some sort of eventual threat. Plus things were mostly still grounded at the base super saiyan level. There could be lots of potential for adventures as Trunks tries to restore his universe to its former glory and maybe bring back some of the old Z warriors.

Also side bar back to a few pages ago: I always thought the movies worked best as their own separate timeline of alternate events. There is a pretty neat flowchart that is easily googleable that outlines how events in the show going differently lead to certain movies playing out the way they do. For example, if Goku’s spirit bomb worked against Frieza, it makes sense that he still would’ve been on the cusp of going super saiyan (but never actually did so) and just needed the push that Cooler gave him.

It's unironically my favorite of the three (now four?) directions for Dragon Ball's future. Especially for Gohan, it's a way more fitting ending than "what if we rehash Super Saiyan 2 Teen Gohan to show how hard he peaked?"

agreed on Gohan. having him become a "scholar" but doing something like understanding ki and teaching it to people made a lot of sense. otherwise, I feel like they should have had him become the superior fighter to goku after becoming a scholar but studying nothing but fighting and battles and poo poo lol

Gohan is a nerd who actively hates fighting and should only ever do so when absolutely necessary. He shouldn’t be a better fighter than Goku whose sole reason for living is finding the best fights possible (and eating and protecting his friends in that order.)

It’s OK, Gohan fans. He’s a much happier person when he’s *Not* being the cool badass fightman.

I mean, Gohan met his wife through fighting, spent most of his bonding time with both of his dads fighting, and seems to enjoy himself the few times we see him fighting without any real stakes. So I assume it's not martial arts he hates, it's violent life or death struggles with the fate of the entire planet on the line.

So he can and should fall behind people like Goku and Vegeta, but it's reasonable for him to stay at "yeah he can meaningfully contribute" level, and Piccolo occasionally getting on his case for getting too rusty is reasonable. Especially since as far as we know, Piccolo's own main training partners are Gohan and splitting himself in two to fight himself. So probably some selfish motivation there too.

Really though, I love the Dragonball Online idea of him bridging the gap between the normal world and the Dragonball stuff, and in the process both living his family man scholar life and leaving the world more capable of defending itself in his own way.

Also fanfic/filler arc wish casting:
Gohan really is too busy to train with Piccolo, but Videl's been meaning to get back into martial arts and her dad is home to watch Pan anyway.
Piccolo is hesitant at first but then they really hit it off and next thing you know Videl is Krillin level at least and now Gohan has his wife also pressuring him to practice together.

--edit
And then Gohan and Piccolo are both busy and we get reminded that Chichi used to do martial arts.

Am I the only one annoyed that the few times we see Chichi fight, she clearly has her own fighting style, and she trained Goten until he went Super Saiyan, but Goten just fights like Goku most of the time?
He should have Chichi's normal strikes, and a combination of Gohan and Trunks' ki blasts and stuff. (Which are themselves a combination of Gohan and Piccolo's, and Vegeta's.)

Anyway I think where Gohan was right before the Tournament Of Power is a good place for him:
Piccolo passed him while he was slacking, but not too much to catch up with some cramming. Just, drifting between third and fourth among the people who live on Earth, based on how busy he's been with the rest of his life. He's really good at it and gently caress sometimes it winds up being necessary, but presumably he'd be happier keeping martial arts as a field of study and a hobby rather than a full lifestyle like most of the cast or quitting altogether. I mean, he did apparently learn the Special Beam Cannon by himself off screen for the hell of it.

Super Hero states that Videl is a martial arts teacher so she hasn't really left them, she's just on the level of a normal practicioner (clearly mastered her art but can't keep up with the beam shooting monsters). It'd be neat if she decided her martial arts style really should move to the next level and ended up training with Piccolo for it though. And paying him in plushies he doesn't really want.

Ah, so she didn't give it up entirely like Chi Chi did (though the only female main character we see still actively fight after getting married is 18, unless you want to count filler in which case I believe Chi Chi still kicked some rear end at least once in DBZ)

Chi Chi didn't give up martial arts. She continued to practice them and is the one who trained Goten how to fight.

One of the early DBZ movies (probably Dead Zone) shows Chi-Chi immediately squaring up in a fighting pose when one of the henchmen attacks her and Gohan. She's likely a better fighter than a lot of the people on Earth it's just the same issue as Mr. Satan, power scaling.

Anyway give us a movie where everyone is depowered to the same level (like in DBFZ) and they have to have a tournament

New spinoff idea - GT redo without Goku. Goten, Trunks, Pan, and Maron all get launched into deep space while playing in an experimental Capsule Corp rocket and have to find their way back. Goku and Vegeta can't Instant Transmission out to get them because, uhh.. reasons.. And Beerus and Whis are.. napping. Yeah, that's it. Maybe they could all be in another universe?

Yeah tbf chichi was trained by the ox king who in turn was trained by roshi so even if her personal style was somewhat different goten knowing turtle school makes sense

Plus ox king and Gohan probably helped some too. Like Gohan doesn't like fighting and he was surprised by goten going super saiyan but him showing goten some stuff every now and then wouldn't be out of character

There's also the fact that like... Chi-Chi kinda needs to approach him like Goku because even if Goten doesn't show it often he's a fight genius too, he picks up techniques insanely quickly.
