I'd say one of the prototypical roots of the 80s action movie are those over-the-top, cartoonish war adventure films starring crowd-pleasing larger than life characters dodging ridiculous quantities of blanks (before they die nobly in order of ascending fame). The Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, The Wild Geese, etc.

Yeah, absolutely. The one (good?) man against an army concept possibly has roots in westerns. I'm under-educated in that genre, but the Django films sure taste similar to me.

Payndz posted:Can anyone recommend something recent (and good) that would satisfy my itch for some 80s/90s-style squib-and-bloodbag action, preferably with a lone hero facing a small army of bad guys? Have you checked out Brawl in Cell Block 99? It's a strong love letter to gritty, ultra-violent pulp.

Yeah, I suppose it fails if the small army requirement is primary. But for me, it's the long slow burn into series of acutely escalating sprees of intense violence, soundtrack, and joyful use of practical bone & splatter bag effects to show the consequence of the action that gave me an incredible deja-vu to the action films of my youth. Your nostalgia may vary.

"Grounded" rarely means anything. It's predominantly a marketing incantation used to diffuse knee-jerk reactions to concepts that could too easily be seen as silly, outdated, or camp.

I feel like Americans may need subtitles though because they're both Scottish... We watched Lockout here last night and it was great fun. Thanks, thread friends, for reminding me of it. As well as the aforementioned opening gag of the punch bending the cigarette, which nicely set up the tone of cartoon-ish violence to come, I also really appreciated the payoff to the ring of lockable explosives "for bulk... heads".

There's lots of bits to like in Rothrock's stuff, but you also won't be missing much if you liberally fast-forward through much of their rote nonsense. Yeah, Shoot'em Up would've been greatly improved with a Robocop level of splatter. But then again, I suppose few things wouldn't. There's lots of fun ideas in there, but it all feels somehow constrained. Anyway, who's up for some Samo Hung? Basebf555 posted:Yea I mean if we're now going to compare gunplay in every action movie to John Wick we're gonna be forever disappointed. I kinda knew going in that the action wasn't going to be quite up to that level but Odenkirk brought a whole different element to the table that made it entertaining aside from just the action(and the action was very good, it just wasn't John Wick). Yeah, I felt the third act got a bit ragged (and the coda didn't fit) but Odenkirk's dark comedy seasonings and punctuations were what elevated it for me above the standard bloke-sploitation power fantasy flick.

Just please no more scenes where John fights his way to have a conversation with someone we've never seen (but who has VIP poise) who monologues for ages about how they can't help him because of how important the rules are and you can't ever break the rules or the entire world will come falling down because the High Table and their rules are oh-so very important and unbreakable. John mentions some off-screen favour or obligation. "Oh, okay then."
