I'm unbelievably bad at pool in Yakuza, and basically only sink balls by accident, but I got six bullseyes in a row the first time I had to play darts for Club Sunshine. :smug:

Hwurmp
May 20, 2005

Pool is easy enough, as long as you aim your shots so you can draw a straight line between the pocket, the target ball, and the position of the cueball/other ball that's going to hit it. Just don't ask me about the rules. I still have no idea why sinking the wrong ball is sometimes a foul and sometimes not. :saddowns:

If anyone has trouble with darts, you can get a better dart set just by going to the bar and playing one solo game. After that, Ebisu Pawn will stock another, even better set for ¥10,000,000.

dmboogie posted:

how forgiving is the game? is there any kind of failure state, or is the consequence of dropping a plate just blocking progression for a bit or w/e?

No fail states.

The plate spinning is largely split between areas it seems like. Basically you start out and the world is trashed, all the facilities/areas are broken down. So a huge chunk of the initial "tedium" is the fact you are the Robin of this world, and need to gather wood/stone/metal and build the blacksmith, build the mill, build the etc. Then you need to also gather materials to fix up the Morgue, fix up the Church, build more crafting stalls that let you do xyz. Then you need more materials to open the mine, build the dock, etc etc. Then you need more materials to...

There is a lot of plate building before you can spin said plates. The Morgue, butchery, and the Church are open to you basically immediately, but every other task seems to require you to unlock it, and then what you get from it helps you unlock other things, etc.

I'm already getting to the point I am able to be more comfortable and not care as much about certain tasks, but the game does frontload a lot of poo poo onto you.

If you just want to chill out with your socialist donkey friend and drunkard talking skull while you bury/"bury" corpses in your Graveyard, it's got no problems with that. In fact if you then want to take the money you make from doing that to slowly but surely buy the materials you need to slowly build up the areas you care about, that also seems to be a viable option. It's just if you are the type of person who wants to bunker down and get everything set up, you'll be grinding materials for a whiiiiiile building all these benches/buildings/upgrades/whatever and setting up the various systems.

I was curious if Graveyard Keeper was any good because Punch Club had an extremely weak second half and I was afraid the developers wouldn't have learned their lesson... so I went through the first few steam reviews and instantly found someone saying that Graveyard Keeper suffers from the same problems that Punch Club had.

Oh well. :(

Phantom Doctrine is not bad or great so far. There are currently some line-of-sight issues that the developers are planning to improve on with fixes.

You can apparently minmax the game to the point of not being fun, according to Rockpapershotgun, but I see that as an avoidable problem. Overall, if you are on the fence, wait a while to see how the updates improve it. Launch discounts are valid for a few more days if you want it for around 33€. I have enjoyed it so far, getting my money's worth.

So it isn't Yakuza or Monster Hunter or anything particularly new and while I'm not quite sure how far I'm into it Overload aka not-Descent continues to be real good. I think I read some complaints about difficulty but I'm playing on Hotshot and the only real trouble I've run into are the bosses and learning how to deal with their unique patterns which is sort of the point of bosses I feel?? I think maybe people are treating it like a horde shooter where you're supposed to go fast and aggro everything and dodge poo poo that's only really in the reactor rooms or certain fights that force you into it. Most other times its about strafing in and out of cover, checking all your angles as you enter rooms, and luring robots.

Anyways if you want to play an updated version of a classic game you may not have played that actually does recreate the original very faithfully (instead of something like Doom 2016 which is sort of only recreating the idea of the original, not that Doom 2016 is bad) but also gets rid of all the annoyances of years-gone Overload is a prime example.
