Basically that sounds like the dev's other game. Repetitive unimaginative gameplay but cool aesthetics. Too bad because its artstyle made me thing it would like Berserk but with good metroidvania.

I like Sundered a whole lot and recommend people maybe check out some gameplay before writing it off as "loving awful" and "Castlevania but all the enemies are respawning Medusa Heads".

Here's the Giant Bomb quick look: https://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-sundered/2300-12408/

I haven't watched the whole video, but it seems like an okay way to get an overview of the game mechanics. it's also not too heavy on spoilers but I recommed stopping when they get to the boss at least.

The "horde" mechanic is definitely a thing, but it's not like it's an endless stream of monsters being thrown at you the moment you step out of the Sanctuary.
Seems more like waves in Risk of Rain (though I haven't played a lot of RoR so I could be wrong) and there are plenty rooms where monsters just straight up won't spawn.

I think the combat is really fun (if a bit simple) and the atmosphere and world builing is really good. I think the death mechanics are solid, the upgrade tree is fun (speaking of Path of Exile :v: ) and the
procedural level generation is just fine.

I don't think it's a game for everyone and thats okay, you can always just refund it if it's not your thing. According to the devs on the steam forums the "horde" mechanic really kicks in after about an hour, which
should leave plenty of time to decide one way or the other.

Basically I'd just hate to see this game suffer the fate of Rain World which is also a really really good game that deserves much better than the incredibly weak response it got.

Thats nice to hear, looks like a cool game to pick up in a sale. If you are expecting some world class Metroidvania this is not it which is fine I suppose when there are games like Hollow Knight.

It's Journey-esque, in that as you adventure through the maps, which they're saying there will be 11 total, people are just seamlessly matched into and out of your world. There's also discrete PvP matchmaking, either 1v1 or 4v4, which puts you in a queue and then loads into specific arenas. I believe they said you can opt out of the seamless multiplayer but don't quote me on it.

Alright thanks. That explains my big question about the game. I would think turning off the multiplayer would make the game really dull. Entire game is about dueling opponents and that's always more fun vs humans. I thought it would be like Dark Souls but with more multiplayer focus but its not that. Its basically a multiplayer game with some story focus.

Side thing I know lots of people turn off the multiplayer on Dark Souls but it isn't really that bad especially since most of the game you will be undead so you can't get invaded. Also joining some of the pvp covenants add a whole new layer to the game. I understand not liking multiplayer or if you have bad internet but I feel lots of people got put off by DS multiplayer just because they got invaded once and died then dismissed it entirely.

old dmc are excellent action games which basically created the modern action games like Bayonetta, ninja gaiden etc... The combat was insanely deep. DmC the reboot had an ok story but poo poo combat which was the main point of dmc franchise. Even the worst DMC game is better than anything Ninja Theory has put out.

Old DMC is a great franchise, I recommend anyone who loves games like Revengeance, Bayonetta, God of War, Nier Automata, Ninja Gaiden to try them out.

Capcom deciding to reboot DMC after making the two best DMC games was dumb and stupid.

DMC 4 was so great in terms of combat and gameplay. Its one of the true 720p games that runs always at 60fps on x360. MTframework by Capcom was a great engine.
DMC4 was a half complete game in terms of the mission/story though. The 2nd part of the story as Dante is just redoing Nero's missions minus 1 different boss.

Still has the best combat of the series and the bloody palace allows for good replay value.

Yep. It was supposed to be a derisive term coined by tryhard "gamers" to insult the genre after Dear Ester won over critics in the game media, then the community decided 'ehhh, gently caress that, let's just lean into it'

Essentially the core gameplay is "hold W while a really great story unfolds via audio and level design" and they are failstate-free (no falling off cliffs or locked doors). They're essentially really-well-animated visual novels, and the very best are jaw-droppingly good and make you think and feel in a way very little else does. I put Edith Finch at #2 all-time, after the utterly transcendent The Beginner's Guide.

Caveat: only buy them on sale or for less than $10, because they tend short (~3 hours on average) and little replayability.

That sounds interesting sometimes you don't have time to play a whole long game. I will try out Dear Esther first since I already own it.

Souls/Bloodborne, Nioh, Surge.. I know they have differences, some massive, but what other titles fall under the action-rpg sub-genre these game seemingly fall into? Bonus points for multiplayer.

For games like Souls there aren't many. If you have consoles or can emulate you can play Demon's Soul's which is the first souls game. Combat is slower paced but I think overall it has the best boss designs and atmosphere tied with Bloodborne.

Hollow Knights has similarities to Souls games but it is more of a really hard Metroidvania. It is definitely worth a buy for its price if you like huge content, a challenging game with great mechanics.

The other obvious choice is Dragons Dogma. Lots of content, great combat. The combat is more RPGish since you have lots of abilities and classes do matter. Also the combat is faster paced more dynamic than any souls game but it is also a brutal hard. game. Dragon's Dogma doesn't have straight up multiplayer but you can download other people's pawn's into your party. Basically you have a party of 4(?) i believe but instead of using generic npcs you can use people's grotesque creations in your party.

For games who are even further away. Toukiden Kiwami 2(monster hunter clone), God eater 2. Those games have good gameplay lots of content but a lot of tedious repetitive poo poo but insane amounts of game content.
