FWIW there are definitely movies and novels where the storytelling is deliberately confusing (Mulholland Drive leaps to mind), and while they're rarely popular hits, critics love at least some of them.

I would not call Mulholland Drive "deliberately confusing".
That movie is like... really easy to understand if you just sit there and think about it for like five minutes lmao.

I'm at a bar and the Men In Black movies are on TV, and the thought occurred to me that would be a great IP to use the Nemesis system with.

Somebody hire me as a consultant.

IMO, X-Files x-com. You send your agents off to small towns or places with paranormal going ons. They can either jump right in and try to immediately take the fight to whatever the paranormal, or you have them sit on the over world a bit investigating what the monster could be and its possible weaknesses. The monsters a mix of generic Paranormal-y things (werewolves, vampires, cults, ghosts) and unique Cryptids generated by the Nemesis system. Art style is MIB cartoon.

You want the X-COM total conversion mod X-COM Files. https://openxcom.mod.io/the-x-com-files

You investigate mysterious sightings, crop circles, cult activity and more. You fight basically everything you described. You get worried as you begin to see more and more UFO sightings. You struggle to get enough stuff so you can get promoted. It's a really good game and the dev is very active.

i played it

imo it does do a good job of capturing that "flashlight in hand" x files moments but please imagine those moments in modern graphics done in the MIB cartoon art style with good graphics woah...

It's a cool game but "lacks variety" is a fair assessment with the combat. I think for me the slower-paced X-Com style combat makes the sense of repetition set in faster than it would in an action roguelite or something like FTL.

other things about the combat that stink: the way fog of war works
things outside of combat that stinks: the main maps are set up weird, the game seem to wants to create a sense of exploration, but still keep the FTL style map, so you get this bastardization of that and the Reknown Explorer's maps. They feel really clunky, they should have just streamline them as much as a FTL map or went all in on the exploration style.

Also the tempo of the game just feels off to me.

porn games are ok, who cares, steam just needs to do their storefront better

get rid of the anti lgbtq propaganda games, the literal games by nazis, and the games about rape.
and when steam did try to crack down on ""porn"" games earlier... oddly enough a lot of it were the lgbtq games weird huh.

You'd think it wouldn't be that hard to get rid of all that but also porn

Or they could just put in a opt in.

Anyway when Steam, again was targeting lgbtq games on the basis of "its breaking our rules" they had plenty of poo poo up like House Party which a lot of porn game sites wouldn't even allowed because it breaks their own community guidelines. Valve doesn't really care about anything until enough people yell at them.

It's been like that for months. The majority of games in the current popular upcoming list are from new devs too.

Some of you guys are giving yourselves brain damage trying to poo poo on Steam. Same with all the people that claim Valve attacked LGBT games or something. That literally never happened.

it happened, stuff with less sexual content than the witcher series was getting targeted and most of them happen to be games about gay people

Andrast posted:

I don't think it was an intended attack but their crackdown of porn games definitely hit quite a few lgbt games while leaving many obvious porn games because Valve is kind of poo poo at doing anything

the current situation where they are mostly hands off is probably an improvement since they suck at actually doing anything else

It was likely who ever was complaining to Valve meant for it to be an intended attack but like you said they suck poo poo at doing anything so they didn't even pay enough attention to what was being targeted.

It didn't. Back when the waifuapocalypse or whatever happened it also affected games from devs like the Sakura series and Huniepop, it's just that some people chose to believe it was about LGBT games.

Later on, we discovered it was all part of that new process in which devs HAVE to write a little warning blurb describing the nature of a game's adult content and that brought a second pass of scrutiny on games with sexual stuff. You COULD say that Valve hosed up the process and alarmed visual novel markers with their loving lovely communication skills but some sort of LGBT witchhunt? Pure fantasy.

i still choose to believe it, but again i don't think Valve did it purposely

but even ignoring that my initial point was how this just demonstrated how toxic and harmful valve's storefront. at the time that happen again, like plenty of anti lgbt propaganda games were up, and while you may claim its just happenstance that a good chunk of the games that went down where LGBT themed, even still that would be still be hosed up. also remember that time when gabe personally put the nazi game made by literal nazis back on steam?

like steam really just sucks. again i don't believe valve is doing this with any political purpose, but they have allowed a terrible environment to brew on their storefront.
