The Windam Earle stuff in Season 2 of Twin Peaks is dull cliche evil genius serial killer stuff. I actually prefer the soapy schlock like James on the road or the beauty contest.

The last couple of episodes though are possibly the best thing ever shown on television.

I realise Earle isn't objectively great, but he has a 60s Batman villian energy I enjoy and he locks Ted Raimi in a giant chess piece. I mean, I also like the beauty contest and Super-Nadine, but could do without James' soft-porn adventure.

I think Dreamsounds recently did something about queer coding in Disney but it's hard to check from my phone.

Some Like It Hot is my favourite movie with cross-dressing in it and I don't think it's too awful these days but I haven't watched for a while. I still hope Jerry and Osgood made it work somehow.

I dunno, looking at it from the outside as a cis person and in comparison to the usual "con artist, corpse or killer" roles it's really easy to miss the super iffy bits.

Okay, fignuts, in no particular order:

• TGTropes dot com is not in fact a website that exists and the format of those examples is parodical and not even consistent
• Kiss my grits
• The content of that list, while mimicking a certain style, reflect my observations of trans people in media over a lifetime
• Slip your hand under the skirt of my grits
• I am a whole-rear end adult transsexual and unless you are able to discuss representation with some degree of comparable experience then slide up that skirt and
• Deepthroat my grits

Diggle Hell is a Real
(Swingin') Place
I've been watching Psych for the first time. It's goofy and kind of funny but what's kind of dragging it out is the character of Lassiter. It's all well and good to play up how terrible he is for jokes (being a cop, protesting against healthcare, being a cop, knocking someone out for saying Reagan was a bad president) but then the show also expects me to care about him getting married and having a kid and being worried about being a cop because of that. I would say the copaganda hasn't aged well but that kind of thing is still going stronger than ever, so it kind of just sucks. Also there were a handful of pretty gross transphobic jokes dragging down one of the most important 'serious' episodes so far.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
I blame a lot of things on our Forever Wars, but I really think you can draw a line from advances in medicine to more disfigured men coming home from war to stereotypical gay and trans villains. You used to be able to just show a hosed up person and everyone would go " Oh, thats the bad guy!" because years of movies and stories had given us that visual short hand, but then soldiers started surviving long enough to come home, and a lot of them were pretty wrecked. You couldn't have physically deformed men be the go to anymore because those men were heroes! If they weren't they'd feel pretty bad about having big old chunks of their body blown off! And the media made it look like everyone went to war. Look back at old movies and comics, if there was a character who hadn't been to war, it was either explained so people wouldn't ask that question, or it was a major plot point.

So then we needed a new code for "this is obviously the bad guy", and a really quick, really lazy way is to show someone transgressing against social mores and norms. Trans and gay people were just a super easy target.

Also you could get a little more juice out of a story by making a killer gay to be extra scary, because then he could be a threat to me, the default white male.

There's so much great stuff in there that it really sucks to have Babs in there (Papa Lazarou I get people being uncomfortable with but it's not actually them pretending to be a black person so I can deal with it) so I can't recommend it to people. Fortunately their newer stuff is still good and doesn't have any lovely stuff in it unless I missed it so I usually just tell people to check that out
