I'm not fully up on my M*A"S*H timeline but it definitely turned from 'kinda preachy' to 'Alan Alda at the pulpit for 30 minutes' near the end.

If you talk to people who caught it first-run they tend to have strong opinions on it. This may be more of a commentary of what else was on TV in the 70s.

Given what happened to the rest of his co-stars (variously, nothing, drug problems, being Harrison Ford) getting in that car accident may well be one of the best things to ever happen to Mark Hamil.

I imagine the overlap between "online enough to be into qanon" and "old enough to care about Elvis" is pretty small.

Toshimo posted:There were unironically multiple different product lines of Desert Shield/Storm Trading Cards. And, they weren't just for weird conservative bastions. Like, they were in every sports card store and big box retail chain. I think even in the grocery stores. There was a box of those in a local thrift store last time I was there. Almost picked them up, but they're not funny enough to be worth having.

I read Casino Royale and Bond is an alcoholic sociopath, like even in story. There was a let's read or somesuch of the other books going on somewhere around here and it swerves hard to ludicrously racist right after.

Gym people (like, serious gym people, competitive fitness people) are weird. They aren't doing it to look attractive, they're doing it for themselves / other gym people.

Mr Interweb posted:i used to think this, but while it is true that i initially started off working out to impress the ladies, when you do it long enough, you do reach a point where you realize you're working out for yourself and that it makes you feel good. You haven't been hanging out with competitive bodybuilders I take it. It's an entirely different mentality from people going the gym for personal fitness and it's myriad benefits. E: I see the confusion. I wasn't trying to say they were weird for doing it not to look attractive. They are weird in their own way, the 'looking good' was explanatory for arnie goon. Barry Foster posted:Well, I mean, competitive athletes of any sort have a totally different mentality from people going to the gym for personal fitness and its myriad benefits. Compared to other competitive athletes? Not much, I assume, but I can't say I've known anyone deeply involved in other sports. It's a lifestyle, with all the attendant oddities that come with such. They eat, sleep, and breathe fitness, forever striving for whatever the next goal du jour is. They're weird in the same way anyone obsessive about something is. (And, of those I've known, I wouldn't characterize them all as obsessive, but a majority thereof.)

Dad rock is rock your dad thought/thinks was/is cool, so it's a moving target. I'm not sure how long it takes things to fall out of being dad rock, though I'm sure they eventually do.

That70sHeidi posted:Does the category of "classic rock" just not exist any more or... ? Because most of the songs on that list I would say is just classic rock, with the oddball exceptions like Avril and Imagine Dragons. Just as 'classic' means 'old', 'classic rock' is 100% under the umbrella of 'dad rock'.
