Sometimes you reach a stalemate. Sometimes you get magic horses.
And it is almost always worth it to go prone while shooting people instead of standing and strafing around. The only risk is that you get hit with a frag grenade, but the amount of killing you'll be doing totally outweighs that risk. I started telling my teammates to go prone while shooting during an offensive and we were killing the enemy team 5:1 because we were all crawling around and they were all strafing and running around trying to shoot us.

Also, the shotgun is exactly as you'd expect it. Kicks rear end.

Any idea how line of sight works in the game?

After basic I arrived at HQ and was given a mission to attack the Colonialist FOB at Callahan. Sergeant Zarken gave me a HMG with 6 boxes of ammunition and said " get in that pillbox and don't come out again till we have taken their FOB."

As a new recruit I was very happy to guard our FOB, being safe from the front lines. Sarge's platoon rolls out leaving me and Micheal Bay, the engineer who is fortifying our base, behind to guard this point. No more than 4 minutes go by when the enemy pushes up and starts taking potshots at private Bay.

I never taken a life before this moment, but I couldn't let my new friend die so I pulled the trigger. Four of the colonial scum fall to ground yelling for medics, pleading with their brother in arms to tell their loved ones they love them before expiring. I'm on my last box of ammo when sarge rolls back up with his corpal in a stolen enemy motorcycle. He commends me on my fine work then orders me to move to the front.

I'm finishing up my last cigarette while writing this. I hope I make it back.

My observations:

General tips:
Try to stay light unless you're a squad specialist (medic, demolitions, etc). Crouch before shooting, trying to A D spam like in most FPS games is worthless. Go prone for long range / hold out engagements. Don't prone if you expect grenades. Use the corners of your screen to aim far. Try to keep your aim on their center of mass. Always carry a bandage.

Guns:

  • Rifle is still my favourite for its stopping power and accuracy. Always available, 2-3 shot kill depending on range, high chance to cause bleeding or slow people down, marvellous.
  • Not much to say about the pistol. Usually a last resort, but it's fun to blap blap suckas. Any gun is deadly up close.
  • Haven't used the revolver much, but I've seen it do some impressive things in the right hands. Not going to use it unless I'm medicing, being a pack mule, etc because it doesn't zoom out like the rifle.
  • SMG is decent for night ops and really good for urban combat.Don't use it at range; I love to taunt enemies spraying and praying me from a distance during the day. You can take 8 or more hits from this thing at max range and laugh them off.
  • Shotgun is a mixed bag. Potential to one shot, kinda like a MLG pro version of the SMG. Use it if you dare.
  • HMG is very good in the right spot. Always be supported while using one, because if you get flanked, you're toast. I really like the gameplay design of the HMG.
  • Carbine should be used by grenadiers or the like, to lighten their load but want something to fight with still (and don't need a trauma kit or hammer in their primary slot). Decent for suppressive fire. Otherwise, stick to rifles.
  • Storm rifle is good, but watch out for the fact it is surprisingly heavy. Magazine size is what makes this gun shine.

Explosives:

  • Frags are bread and butter anti-infantry. Most people should have 1 or 2 handy for skirmishing or putting pressure on defending infantry.
  • HE grenades are bread and butter anti-vehicle / structure. Keep making these, and bring them to the front by the truck load. You'll need a ton to bust through a solid defence line.
  • Smoke grenades go hand-in-hand with HE grenades. Smoke cover blocks LoS with defences, so are a guaranteed way of busting lines safely. People neglect to make theses, so make sure to make an order while loading up the other boom-booms. An assault without these is precarious at best.
  • Green ash are like frag grenades but terrorize your enemies without gas masks, but do nothing if they do. If you know they don't have them but you're wearing one, grab a revolver, a whole bunch of green ash, wait for night, then become a true WW1 death dealing badass.
  • Stickybombs... because sulphur is too precious to use on these, you're unlikely to see them. They blow up good and have niche uses, but pale in comparison to...
  • Satchels. Likely your first sulphur sink. The true way to deal with heavy fortifications. More risky and heavy to lug around, but are pretty much ~8 HE in a bag with a bigger radius. Always try to make some, but put them in a less popular TH or FOB so that... less skilled people don't nab them and waste them. Or even just take them out of the stockpile and put them in a squad truck, safe from the front.
  • RPGs: Dunks vehicles, and good for bunker busting too. Kinda hard to keep up with the rocket demand. Easy to aim within half a screen, needs knowledge and skill to shoot out farther. Try aiming beyond your target when shooting it long range.
  • Mortars: With the knowledge, great anti infantry / terror weapon, not too good for structures, but perfectly safe to use. Move up to artillery when you can afford it.
  • Artillery: Big boy gun. Have a spotter who can do vector addition. With solid logistics, blow up everything.
  • Howitzer: Not all that useful imo. Need to experiment further.

Vehicles:

  • Truck: It's a truck. Build them by the truckload, never enough. Carry the boys, carry your bmats, this is straightforward. Only takes a few bullets to disable and is really slow off road, so watch out for ambushes.
  • Motorcycle: Scout vehicle. Only carries gas and 2 dudes. You can use your secondary slot while in the passenger buggy, which means scouting with your binoculars. but really means using your revolver like a boss. Goes fast and eats all your gas while you hold your sprint key (shift by default).
  • Construction Vehicle (CV): Repairs the dilapidated buildings in town, and makes outposts. If you're logibros on a fresh server, this will be the first thing you make. Treat it like a truck you can build near your initial TH. Slow as balls, however. Can carry some supplies, so it's a good idea to have this and a truck with all the bmats you fought for in the main town venture forth. Easy to disable with bullets, but takes some bullets to blow up. Cannot be squad claimed, so CVs are a popular target by infiltrators / team dicks with spanners.
  • FMG (Field Machine Gun): When the HMG is not enough. Uses its own 14.5mm ammo, and needs no fuel. Dies to any explosives though, and can be flanked easy. With a pile of ammo, can become a murder machine on choke points. Recommended for early game Maginot line breakthroughs.
  • APC / Halftrack: Your first ticket to vehicular manslaughter. Resistant to bullets, but dies easy to explosives. Has 4 cargo slots, so 2 spares for precious cargo. Can carry 3 people, including the 2 crew. Use it to run over everything, and provide suppressive fire for a squad. Suprisingly effective against light defences, so make tons of ammo for it and raid for days.
  • (Light) Tanks: Gods of the battlefield. Ammo is precious, but when you have enough, prepare to blow up everything. Otherwise, save the rounds for big threats or high value targets, and have a bro APC provide machine gun fire.. or enjoy Squishy Time™. If the tanks had coaxial machine guns, they'd be ungodly OP. Break through a weak point in their defences, and prepare to shut down everything. Watch out for gun turret defences and other tanks. If you get disabled, die in your tank like a man, never bail, never let the enemy have it.

Maybe when I get bored again I'll talk about defences, misc gear, and tactics next.

First impression AAR/logistics: I didn't want to be the passenger in a half track so I did logistics and yeah it's totally a little slow but the payoff of a ton of commendations and grateful goons owns.

I spent like an hour harvesting and dumping a ton of supplies for our half tracks at the base we were operating from and when our three vehicles returned from the front I already had a shitload of ammo, fuel, and grenades ready and assembled for them to pop back onto the field basically immediately. Ranked up like twice from commendations (Thanks dudes! Snort/chopt in-game, btw)

It also definitely feels like you're the real hero when you hear how low on supplies everyone is, then the escape back to home where you're waiting with a nice warm cup of ammo. Goonsquad managed to cut off a ton of logistics with my first supply run earlier in the night and then when they returned I got all 3 half tracks fully armed with grenades, materials, and ammo, and took their combat loot to a freshly built outpost that needed it. I logged off as they charged back into battle at the new FOB fully stocked.

I won't do it every night but it does have a somehow satisfying loop with just enough downtime to not be scrambling if you want to wander off and make a drink or some poo poo. Game is cool for making that a very important part of the flow. Definitely unique to anything I've played, at least.

Fat.
Yelling "SQUISHIES!!!" as you run over the enemy is amazingly satisfying. Half tracks also seem far better for raiding enemy logistics than tanks ever were.

Also, if you're trying to shoot something, aim through it so you see a little red. When using a rifle and trying to pick off enemy infantry, I've found I'm far far far more accurate this way.

The half-track assault behind enemy lines last night was money. It was cool to see the consequences of the absolute mayhem we caused to their logistics on the map, as our front line took out their FoB and made it our own.

Someone who's played longer than me can probably give a better answer but running logistics myself, the most vulnerable part would be getting the actual crates to the front. I'm sure it depends on the map and front lines a little bit but all of the mining and production happened so far behind our lines it would have been seriously difficult to sustain any disruption. Where as when I was bringing stuff to the townhall goons were meeting at, I was much closer to the line with no escort or serious way of defending myself against anything but a lone wolf attack.

That was basically what we did last night, we were behind their FoB and poo poo all over several trucks which came up the road.

Later we switched to infiltrating near their main base and caught a lot of logistical types with their pants way down. I think we took out 2 CV's, a dozen or so players, several fully loaded trucks, and wound up jacking 2+ stacks of rMats. Not to mention constantly destroying their watchtowers and building our own.

I think we lost 3 half-tracks in exchange for completely turning the tide at the front line, taking almost all offensive pressure away, and getting their FoB destroyed.

Probably not a bad idea!

We also spent a lot of time jockeying around for someone to hop out and make repairs or build towers. It would be cool if someone outside the halftrack could quickly do it, that way we don't risk the designated grenadier, gunner, or driver and the halftrack can stay mobile.
