Bethesda has enough business sense to permanently discount their games. Doom was $20 by black Friday last year, if not earlier, so who the hell expects to sell anything at $60 after that just drop it to $30. See Dishonored 2 which is $40.

I wish I didn't install the M4-78 planet in KOTOR 2 because this is the most boring poo poo I've ever experienced in an RPG, let alone a video game. People who complain about fetch quests in RPGs needs to see this and be humbled instantly.

Yeah, when it popped up on the Humble Bundle I thought it was a bad team shooter like LawBreakers but it's actually Saint's Row 4 + Crackdown and that's a'okay. Still seems like they're having trouble advertising what it actually is and putting out joke videos on porn sites doesn't really help the marketing imo

Like when Halo came out the PC crowd just had to shout at the top of their lungs that Quake 3 was a better multiplayer game and Tribes 2 was faster and larger and Half-Life had a better campaign but Halo had a big singleplayer + big multiplayer + vehicular combat and offered it to an audience that had none of those.

What I'm saying is that beneath the glowing praise are plenty of criticisms even from the people giving it 10s because they don't loving matter in the face of the other elements that are enjoyable.

And I just used my best weapons because the game never really puts you in a situation where you're starving for equipment and scales weapons over time so you're progressively finding better stuff.

But this has to be the biggest hurdle in game design. If you give the player limited resources they're going to hoard them even if it makes the game actively harder which is why everything is going the way of timers and cooldowns.

I'm less quoting you and more like your post triggered my eye rolling over this 7,000 word article filled with cliches that crop up in every "this is overrated" article.

But yeah, video games by design are more than their individual parts. I like the impermanence of scavenging and throwing poo poo in enemy faces, and it has the bonus of doing double damage or more with a shot to the head. Your arrows end up being more powerful than melee weapons in some cases, usually auto-killing elemental enemies, and your infinite bombs, stasis, and magnet abilities all work in a pinch with the designers clearly putting manipulative items like powder kegs and bee hives in populated areas. And normally I tired of the Assassin's Creed model of filling out the world map but really it's because AssCreed makes a chore out of it where the tower exists solely to trigger new things to auto-fill on your map. So yes, standing on top of a hill and looking out over the world to mark things is an incredibly good feeling in an open world game and it triggered nostalgia for Morrowind where you ask for directions and a character is like "See that giant landmark? Follow the road south of it, spin around three times, go up the third hill, then whistle at the moon." That is incredibly my poo poo and it is legitimately lost in an era of auto maps and pointers.

Take apart the building blocks and you lose everything BotW is about but together there legitimately isn't a game like it no matter how you squint your eyes. Even Witcher 3, a game I felt came close to this, relied a bit too much on metagaming to enjoy. You could play without the UI and markers but it's clear the designers wanted you to play with them.

And my take away is that they do, and our experiences just can't click together. I knew I would love this game when a moblin attacked a stasis rock, ran at me, then got knocked away from behind. Critics would say "so what, what does this add" but it's an illusion of interactivity that hasn't been broken yet and 80 hours in I still approach every encounter like "how can i gently caress with these creeps"

I'll say this one last thing, because I'm not wild about the game and think it's pretty good not GOTY, but it ticks all my boxes because it's a game that gives out what you put in and the designers step back enough to give you room to breath. A lot of developers don't trust the player enough to walk a straight line without telling you what's going on but BotW has a pretty hands-off tutorial section then boots you out. The korok seeds are a lovely diversion as they're deliberate enough to be noticeable when you know what to look out for. Compare this to Batman where the Riddler trophies and puzzles are keyed to a color and you collect things to reveal a thing to reveal more trophies. Having a bigger inventory is nice but when every enemy drops a weapon and I've got melee and arrows, I don't need an armory to handle any challenge. That's all optional stuff I can put time into or not.

BotW also made me reevaluate Zelda 2, a game I used to think was poorly designed and arbitrarily hard but now come away that where it lacks in Zelda 1's exploration it more than makes up for that with combat-as-a-puzzle.

It's strange, I think the Souls games should be my favorite series of all time but I've fallen off of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls three or four times.

I have never farmed for a weapon or returned to areas to get specific weapons. I take what enemies drop and toss poo poo if there's something better in a chest. If I need more strength I've got an inventory full of potions that do just that.

Tying damage to character levels or abilities will drive the game in the direction as the Bethesda games where it becomes impossible to balance content without scaling everything to your character. This leads to ridiculous scenarios like a bandit wearing full plate or a rat that could decimate an army. The key to Zelda's design is that the world has a consistent rulset with the monsters and Link basically on the same level in relation to each other. What sets them apart is the equipment.

And I think that's great design. You can adjust the difficulty by focusing more or less on hearts or wearing different armor. People will say there's no reason not to wear the Champion's Tunic but a level 1 tunic is the same defense as most of the other shirts and to get to level 2 you have to deliberately farm dragons, a time consuming process that I didn't discover until reading a spoiler and don't want to bother with at all because I have other poo poo to do in the game.
