Like coming off of FF12 what makes a character overpowered isn't getting the Legendary Stabby Spear of the Endless Desert or whatever the heck, it's equipping that Ribbon that makes you immune to most status ailments and also gives you Regen but who cares about Regen in FF12.

I mean yeah in FFT it was Ribbons that prevented you from being stomped by (SPOILER)Marquis Elmdor's assassins. You could hit like a truck all you wanted but if you didn't have some way to avoid the one-hit KO or other devastating ailments you were hosed regardless.

in that game it was stuff like +Speed or +Faith/Brave that could tip battles in cool ways... well, until you get (ANOTHER SPOILER)TG Cid and the entire rest of the game just shatters across your knee.

ultima 3 had some pseudo-alignment going on in the background that would lean you either towards or away from different virtues. for instance, if you got into combat with a wild animal you would accrue some negative alignment if you killed an innocent creature instead of running away. it wouldn't be like that though if you were facing an orc or something. it was actually a pretty neat system
