Latest Game Updates
What's changed?

Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG from ArenaNet, published by NCSoft. It takes place approximately 250 years after the events of Guild Wars 1, and features the adventures of many different races and people across a varied fantasy world. Guild Wars 2 includes extensive PvE (including 5-person dungeons, raids, story instances, and world bosses), World vs World vs World (a massive week long three server war including castle sieges and strategic battles), and Structured PvP (5v5/8v8 structured "esports" matches where gear/level are normalized and taken out of the equation).

Almost 2 years ago, the first GW2 expansion pack came out called Heart of Thorns. Since then, we've conquered the Maguuma Jungle and killed another Elder Dragon, and begun a journey through a variety of new zones through Anet's Living Story updates. Now, in the summer of 2017, we're gearing up for the 2nd expansion pack named Path of Fire, which you will read more about below.

The base game of GW2 is FREE TO PLAY! There are a number of restrictions on this, available here: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Account#Free_accounts
If you decide you like it, and you probably will, you can buy it here: http://buy.guildwars2.com/

Few important things to get out of the way first:
  • If you are looking at this game for the first time, you absolutely cannot go wrong. Not only is this absolutely is one of the best MMOs currently on the market, it's FREE to play!
  • If you are looking at this again after a break, yes, a lot has changed you should come back and try it again! As there is no sub fee, you have literally nothing to lose but a bit of time. The reasons people left are subjective and many, so no one else other than you can tell you if you'd enjoy it again. Just fuckin' try it again! It's a fantastic time to return to GW2, and there will be an enormous amount of content and a very healthy goon population to play with.
  • No more temporary content! I know this was a big complaint for a while, but Anet learned their lesson. Get the rewards you missed from laurel vendors, and if you missed episodes in Season 2 and 3, you can unlock episodes with gems. If you log in for each episode during the Living Story updates, you unlock it for free.
  • I apologize in advance, but this OP is not going to list any specific builds. The maintenance required would be ridiculous, as not only are builds very subjective, they change regularly as the game is updated. Refer to the links section lower in this OP for sites about current builds and meta info!
  • Guild Wars 2 is an non-traditional MMO for the most part. Fun and looking good tends to come before everything else here. Choose your build, gear, playstyle, everything, based on what you find the most fun or best looking.

The second and latest expansion pack for GW2 is Path of Fire!

  • New specializations for each class!
  • No new tier of gear
  • No increase in level cap
  • 5 new enormous zones in the Crystal Desert
  • Continuation of the living story as we chase down Balthazar
  • Mounts!

Path of Fire is a standalone expansion (does not require nor come with HoT) and comes out on September 22, 2017, and can be bought at https://buy.guildwars2.com

The first expansion pack for GW2 was Heart of Thorns!

Heart of Thorns came out on October 23, 2015, and can be bought at https://heartofthorns.guildwars2.com

The primary home server for goons is Maguuma, a North American realm. Most Euros, Aussies, and other assorted human beings play on Maguuma with no lag problems etc. You will find people online around the clock in both main goon guilds. Both guilds are similar in a lot of ways and you should try both! You can be in multiple guilds in this game. While we recommend you choose Maguuma for a server, your home server choice only matters for WvW, all instances and game systems are linked except for that. As well, there is limited NA/EU interaction, so please ensure you are in the correct geographic realm (North America) for goony play!

Visit the forums for either of the guilds below for info on how to join them! Do not post in this thread asking for an invite. Both guilds use off-site authorization and have a specific process for joining them. Again, do not post in this thread asking for an invite!

:siren::siren: About the Game :siren::siren:

PvE (Player versus Environment)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5RCeGiMby8

GW2's PvE is quite extensive, and consists of a number of major parts:

  • Living Story: Anet's official term for changes to the game intended to bring the world of Guild Wars 2 to life. Each major game update includes NPCs, events, and sometimes new instances that tell the story of Tyria's ongoing evolution.

Living World, aka Living Story, is how Anet is adding new content to the game. There is more on this later in the OP, so read on!

  • Personal Story: You character follows a story which leads you throughout the world, replacing the campaign and mission system from the original Guild Wars. The storyline is personalized based on the character's race, profession and biography questions answered during character creation and branches based on decisions made by the player during game play.

Much of the personal story takes place in solo instances for the character, but other players can be invited to take part in their story. The story instances scale in difficulty with the number of players participating.

Each character also has a home instance which updates as the player advances through the personal story and the world. The player can invite other players to see their home instance.

  • Renown Hearts: Renown Hearts are fixed areas within an explorable zone that give a set of tasks for a player to assist with and provide a reward upon completion. Rather than being given as a checklist of tasks a player needs to do in sequence, players simply follow a list of possible actions or activities that contribute to the progress of an area's renown heart. Renown hearts act as a way of guiding players towards dynamic events.

  • Events: Dynamic events ensure something is always happening in the world. These events replace the traditional MMO quest system, and any player coming across the event can contribute and be rewarded. Events can influence or overlap with each other, chaining from one event to another. A large portion of PvE experience consists of players participating in events together, ranging in from helping farmer grow his crops to epic battles against champions of the Elder Dragons.

Events are the bread and butter of GW2 content, and you should do them as much as you can everywhere you can!

  • Dungeons: Dungeons have two modes: a story mode which tells the story of Destiny's Edge. Each of the 8 dungeons has one story mode version and three explorable mode versions (with Arah being the exception with 4). You have to run the story mode, which is lower level than the explorable mode, to unlock the explorable paths! Only one person in your dungeon group has to do this.

  • Fractals: Fractals of the Mists is a special type of dungeon that consists of an array of mini-dungeons called fractals, where each fractal has its own story and environment. Characters are adjusted to level 80 within the dungeon. The dungeon is one of the primary sources of ascended equipment and provides materials for crafting infused equipment.

Here is a good goon post on how Fractals work!

  • Raids: New with Heart of Thorns, raids will be 10-player party-based PvE instances intended to challenge players more than any other PvE group mode. This image succinctly describes raids:

  • Crafting: A player can gather materials to craft items for themselves and their friends. A player character can possess two crafting disciplines at a time, but gathering of different resource types is not restricted. Crafting recipes can be discovered by purchasing them from trainer, by leveling up or as loot, but mostly by experimenting with different combinations of materials at a crafting station.

Crafting is often used as an expensive way to powerlevel alts, with the experienced granted from it. Several crafting skills can also be advanced to level 500 now, and craft Ascended-tier items.

WvW (World vs World)

WvW is a PvP game mode where players from three different servers, or worlds, battle in The Mists. It features open-world combat on four large maps with up to several hundred players per map. In World versus World, players can siege structures such as Keeps and Towers with siege weapons, and battle over resources, to win rewards for their world and prestigious World Experience for themselves.

Note that for free accounts, you can't enter WvW until level 60! You can find detailed information about WvW mechanics here.

WvW has a huge variety of features and progression options:
  • Skirmishes are 2-hour chunks that split up each 1 week match. Within each skirmish, you can get "pips" that count towards a reward chest that give you all sorts of fancy items.
  • Reward Tracks have been added as a way of rewarding participation in WvW. There are tracks for a huge variety of zones that, once completed through participating in various WvW events, will give you rewards for PvE progression and unique skins from the zone in question. It's a great way of getting PvE items from playing WvW.
  • WvW Ranks have been introduced along with WvW XP to give you bonuses to everything from flame rams to amount of supply you can carry. There are thousands of ranks to work through and this is completely separate from regular XP.
  • Edge of the Mists. This is an "overflow" map that never has a queue and just spins up more instances of. It does not count towards your world's point total, but can give you other bonuses for winning like supply drops in the main four maps. EotM has 3 unique varied environments (desert, jungle, ice/snow), many objectives to capture, and is extremely fun being a smattering of rocks floating in the air. It contains many "special" objectives, from reactors (which have supply dumps) to airports and siege workshops. There are some fun transforms (like lights balls to scout with, and scorpions that siege things with butt missiles), as well as other unique and interesting mechanics.
  • Borderlands Bloodlust has taken the place of the orb of power mechanic. In the middle of each Borderlands map, the lake is replaced with 5 "ruins" to capture and hold. If your world holds 3 of the 5 for enough time, everyone on the other maps on your side gains a "Borderlands Bloodlust" buff for a limited time. These points slowly decay and are a very popular activity for small groups.
  • Seasons have now happened twice. A season is a 9 week long tournament, where worlds are split up into gold/silver/bronze leagues and battle for a placing. Achievement sets and rewards have been added for each season, and you get better or fancier rewards the higher your world's placing.

sPvP (Structured PvP)

(thanks to MLG allstar Lazy aka Turncoat Mommy for this writeup)

sPvP is the game's small scale fast pace pvp game mode. The game pits level 80 characters against each other using normalized gear setups. If you're not 80 yet, don't worry. The game will auto level you and give you most the traits and skills unlocked, so no matter if you're level 1 or 80, you'll be on a level playing field as everyone else. The only thing that would need to be unlocked are some amulets.

Currently there are 6 conquest maps and one custom arena only team deathmatch map. Every conquest map has their own secondary objective or gimmick to make them unique. You can play these maps in either hot join, solo queue, or as a team. The queued modes are ranked so you'll have a fun game of even teams of 5 with players ranked roughly at your skill level. It is very much worth a try at the ranked game modes if hot join did not interest you much.

You can earn prizes such as champion bags, materials, level tomes, skill scrolls, finishers, even dungeon gear and legendary materials. You have nothing to lose so give it a try, you might find it a fun activity to do in addition to all the other content the game offers.

A 50S RAYGUN posted:

so you've decided to try pvp

so, you've ran around the world a bit, and you've killed a few thousand flags on sticks. what's this pvp people talk about? well, i was just like you, friend, and i decided to try it out last night. the first thing you need to is click the pvp button (i think it's two crossed swords, but that could have just been the two dudes banging in world chat distracting me). join a pvp lobby??? you bet!

you will arrive in a tutorial world. this place is useless and i recommend you treat every friendly npc as if they were an enemy counterintelligence officer trying to confuse you. revive my allies? why the heck would i do that?!

you will next arrive in the mists, or something, i don't really know. there will be a bunch of people yelling about nerf guns, i think. at the top, there's a button that says 'find pvp match'. click it, then choose unranked, because your dad was right, you're too scared of risk, and that's why no one went to prom with you.

after reading about two charrs screwing for a while, you'll find a pvp match! vote for whatever map you think sounds coolest. i voted for the legacy of foo fighters, I think, but other people picked Sky Hammer so we had to have our rumble there.

the objectives
there are three points in gw2 pvp: home, mid, and far. i will break them down briefly.

home is the point where you go to inexplicably be killed by 5 of your enemies appearing from the fog, like a grim specter of vengeance.

mid is the point where most of the action happens. this means you will be the only person on your team to make a meaningful effort to appear there.

far is the point where your team goes to lose 4v1s against the opponent bunker guardian, at which point your team will tell you that you are a fucker.

the teams
now, let's break down the teams. as this is your first game of gw2 pvp, the enemy team will consist of five Europeans with over a million games who share a single consciousness and whose hivemind allows them to coordinate to a startlingly preternatural degree. they have long forgotten the concept of mercy, and the only joy they feel is when the opponent team does not score above 50 points. even if you could beat them (you can't), it would be cruel to deny them their fleeting happiness.

your team will consist of you, a family of vaguely organized salamanders, a phone book on a keyboard, a 1990s lego mindstorm trying to play using a primitive light sensor and a shoddy series of if-then statements, and a well-trained feline who will immediately change their class so as to be as redundant as possible. let's do this!

the match begins
four of your team immediately rush to capture the nearest point (home). this will be the last time you see three of them, so i suggest you do not become too attached. you should go mid and see if you can beat the opposite team there (you can't). when you see four of the opposite team on mid, you should attempt to pull back and find your team. an enemy thief will immediately appear behind you and begin the process of humiliating you. i either could not find the proper hotkey or else i did not assign the skill where my character comically falls on his butt, killing the thief, so i did what i am pretty sure is 100 percent correct play: died. while the opponent is trying to kill you, throw a bunch of rocks at them. in this way, the thief will live up to his name, and fall victim to his own hubris, and then you can awkwardly die next to each other, just like in titanic. you could have shared the door, kate.

you check the sidebar, and realize what you feared: three of your team are repeatedly throwing themselves off of cliffs. the cat, your 3rd engineer, has become distracted and is trying to stack turrets on top of each other. at this point, there will be an announcement that the skyhammer is online, or something. i don't know what it is, what it does, or how to turn it online, nor will i ever, because i paid a wizard to lay a cantrip upon me that will kill me if i ever have to play skyhammer again.

at this point, your team will begin to complain about how they are the best player on your team, and it is unfair to be matched with untouchables such as you. the enemy team will sense this and immediately collapse upon whoever is typing. the salamander's final words will be 'noob war doesn't even hambossssssss6'. at this point, the skyhammer will again be online. you will still not be sure what it does. is it scrambling your teammate's brains? i think so. the phonebook has been making remarkably unsound choices.

after a few more minutes, the enemy team will reach 500 points (you will have somehow acquired 20, although no one on your team is sure how or will accept responsibility). the opponents will all thank you for your time and offer a few helpful tips to improve your play, which your teammates will drown out with hyphens, either unwilling or unable to accept that there is a profanity filter, or else really trying to explain the concept of subtraction.

that wraps up your first game of guild war 2 player versus player! i hope you had as much fun as i did, and join me next time, when i explain how to play pvp when the person yuo are queuing with has level 80 in pvp!

Channel legendary powers to slaughter foes and unleash chaos on the battlefield with our brand new profession: The Revenant. Enter the field of battle heavily armored and equipped with the otherworldly powers of the Mists.

The Revenant is basically as if the movie The Revenant were an MMO class.

If the Revenant were a food, it would be a steak so rare it's still bloody and mooing

The Revenant's 1st elite specialization is Herald (shield)
The Revenant's 2nd elite specialization is Renegade (shortbow)

The Warrior is a master of weapons who relies on speed, strength, toughness, and heavy armor to survive in battle. A warrior can shrug off blow after blow to stay in the fight, all the while building up adrenaline to fuel his offense.

The Warrior is like playing with cheat codes on but you're only invited to him for your banners and buffs.

If the Warrior were a food, it would be an In-n-Out Double Double Animal Style.

The Warrior's 1st elite specialization is Berserker (torch)
The Warrior's 2nd elite specialization is Spellbreaker (dagger)

The Guardian is a devoted fighter who calls upon powerful virtues to smite enemies and protect allies. As dangerous with a staff as he is with a mighty two-handed hammer, a true guardian is a master tactician who knows when to sacrifice his own defenses to empower his allies to achieve victory.

The Guardian is extremely valued in a group setting, and combine extremely high damage skills with buffs and heals. To counter this power, they get all their weapon models ruined by the Aegis Effect.

If the Guardian were a food, it would still be an aegis-shaped grilled cheese.

The Guardian's 1st elite specialization is Dragonhunter (longbow)
The Guardian's 2nd elite specialization is Firebrand (axe)

Masters of mechanical mayhem, The Engineer tinkers with explosives, gadgets, elixirs, and all manner of deployable devices. They can take control of an area by placing turrets, support their allies with alchemic weaponry, or lay waste to foes with a wide array of mines, bombs, and grenades.

Engineers are extremely fun to play with a wide variety of gadgets and makes poo poo blow up whilst giving you carpal tunnel syndrome.

If the Engineer were a food, it would be a slow cooker with literally every edible item in your kitchen in it that you have to stir every 5 seconds for 8 hours.

The Engineer's 1st elite specialization is Scrapper (hammer)
The Engineer's 2nd elite specialization is Holosmith (sword)

A master of stealth and surprise, The Thief is deadly in single combat—particularly when catching enemies off guard. Thieves compensate for their relatively low armor and health by being quick and evasive. They can move through the shadows, vanish into thin air, or steal items from their opponents and use them as weapons. Enemies should watch their backs, or the thief will watch it for them.

Thieves have fancy twirls and dodges and knives and arrows and leather spandex bodysuits and can turn invisible as well to top it off and they're so goddamn stupid and annoying and stop yelling at me i don't w-

The Ranger is a jack-of-all-trades and a master of them all as well, relying on their keen eye, steady hand, or the power of nature itself. A master of ranged combat, the ranger is capable of striking unwitting foes from a distance with their bow.

Rangers literally gently caress trees and their pets at the same time.

If the Ranger were a food, it would unseasoned kale chips.

The Ranger's 1st elite specialization is Druid (staff)
The Ranger's 2nd elite specialization is Soulbeast (dagger)

The Elementalist channels natural forces of destruction, making fire, air, earth, and water do their bidding. What the Elementalist lacks in physical toughness, they make up for in the ability to inflict massive damage in a single attack, dropping foes from a distance before they can become a threat. Yet, despite incredible offensive potential, versatility is what makes the Elementalist truly formidable. Rather than swap weapons to adjust to new situations, the multi-faceted elementalist quickly adapts to new threats by attuning to different elements as needed. When the elementalist attunes to any of the four elements, they receive intrinsic bonuses that continually empowers them.

The Elementalist throws a buttload of magic everywhere damaging and healing everything in sight, as they float around a badass pillar of fire.

The Elementalist's 1st elite specialization is Tempest (warhorn)
The Elementalist's 2nd elite specialization is Weaver (sword)

The Necromancer is a practitioner of the dark arts who summons the dead, wields the power of lost souls, and literally sucks the lifeblood of the enemy. A Necromancer feeds on life force, which he can use to cheat death or bring allies back from the brink. A necromancer feeds on death and decay. Life force is the energy that a Necromancer uses to extend his own life. Using specific skills, a Necromancer builds up life force by attacking and killing enemies.

The Necromancer invokes the power of death to destroy your very soul, and they're very good at making a single player look like an entire zerg with their minions.

If the Necromancer were a food, it would be soup made from the venom of poisonous frogs.

The Necromancer's 1st elite specialization is Reaper (greatsword)
The Necromancer's 2nd elite specialization is Scourge (torch)

The Mesmer is a magical duelist who relies on deception and confusion to keep their opponent in check. Indecision is their greatest ally. Using powerful illusions to distract, they make sure they never go toe to toe with an enemy; they use their powers and tactics to set up an unfair fight. Just when you think you've figured out what the mesmer is doing, illusions begin to shatter, clones start to fade away, and you realize you've been swinging at empty air all along. It's hard to keep your eye on the real mesmer.

Mesmers are still GW2 mass transit system. To this date I'm not sure what else mesmers actually do.

If the Mesmer were a food, it would be a purple sparkly cake in the shape of a school bus.

:woop: Weaver hype :woop:

For anyone as hyped about weaver as I am, here's an info dump from WoodenPotatoes' stream. Sorry, no screenshots. But the VoD can be found on the GW2 Twitch.

Main mechanic: Dual Attuning
-Primary attunement determines your left two weapon skills, secondary determines the right two, and the third is a dual skill that combines both elements.
-Third skill is the same no matter which order you are attuned.
-Colored bar between weapon skillbar and attunement bar represents your composite attunement.
-Using attunement swap is like a queue. Your right attunement becomes whatever your left attunement was, and your left attunement becomes the new one. To attune to one attunement fully, you have to use the same one twice in a row.
-Attunement swapping is on a 3 second global cooldown.
-Dual attuning and single attuning are both encouraged with traits.
-Many skills/traits grant a barrier so you don't instadie as a melee ele. Barrier is a new mechanic that buffers your health total.
-Left attunement is considered your primary attunement for the purposes of traits, like passive heal or immunity to crit.

Sword skills
F1 - Chain that burns on the final strike
F2 - Leap and short fire field
F3 - Deals extra damage to burning enemies, also causes burn itself
W2 - Evade backwards, regenerate, and leave a water field
A2 - Shadowstep to a target, daze, and gain superspeed if you interrupt. Leap finisher

Dual skills

Sword
F/W - Double strike, apply burn and chill
W/A - Ranged chill attack that hits multiple targets

Staff
W/A - Moving hurricane that pulses heal and chill
A/E - Large piercing boulder that moves very fast and dazes. Long windup but big damage

Scepter
F/A - Piercing beam that deals large damage
F/E - Meteor that causes vulnerability and burning
W/A - Piercing projectile that chills
W/E - Multihit aoe attack that causes bleeding and vulnerability

Stances

Non-elites have 2 charges, which can be used successively on short cooldowns. Charges take longer to refresh.

Healing - Gives a buff that heals in an aoe when hitting enemies
Stone Resonance - Gain barrier periodically
Unravel - While active, forces you into one attunement
Twist of Fate - Stunbreak, evade, and gain superspeed
Primordial Stance - Damages and inflicts different conditions based on attunements. Fully attuning one element gives the same condition twice
Weave Self (elite) - Reduces attuning cd, gain bonuses for attuning. If you attune to every element before the stance ends, gain a powerful buff that combines each individual attunement's bonus, and you can end the stance to float nearby enemies

How's the endgame PvE content in this game these days? Last time I played was during launch and I enjoyed the exploration and leveling part, but stopped playing pretty much instantly after getting to the max level due to not having that much to do. Dungeons at the time felt like a bit of a clusterfuck because party members didn't have as clear cut roles as in other MMOs

Are there any good links yet with summaries of the Wooden Potatoes spec video? I really do not want to listen to that but I do want to know what's up. Is Scourge basically Ritualist?

You place the little sand ghosts around wherever, and the other 3/4 profession skills make them cast effects on targets in their range, costing some amount of life force. Sort of like shatters I guess. All of the skills said they only hit a target once per activation so no stacking up all 3 on top of yourself, but it's stuff like clearing conditions, fears, and adding Barrier (the new absorb shield mechanic), plus they strike damage on enemies which will probably be what inherits the Life Blast traits. One of the grandmaster traits gave you only one sand ghost but it had larger effect radius and a shorter cooldown. The last profession skill was some pulsing PBAoE.

Haunting you until no 8 arrives.
Weaver looks really fun, sniper thief could be cool, same with bow rev. Really disappointed with the mesmer spec though. Oh boy, even more illusions and maybe some invisibility! That's just straight up more of the same thing Mesmer already did in truckloads. I was really hoping for them to expand on teleportation gimmicks as a new direction.

Wait, what the... this is a huge nerf! Or rather, I'm guessing the elite spec was so broken at the traditional 1.5 seconds that they had to do this.

I think it's going to be a vastly different playstyle from current ele or tempest. Weaver really change the flow attunement swapping and skill rotations. Thinking of it in terms of current rotations is probably the wrong mindset.

WoodenPotatoes did a demo on Twitch, and it actually looks really wicked. The spec seems a lot more clone-focused, with them being able to pump out crazy burst. The ambush skill you get from using the special dodge is also used by clones. Scepter barrage looks wild coming from three clones plus the player.

I'm actually way more hyped for PoF than I was for HoT, mainly because the game feels like it's in such a good place these days and Anet really hit their stride post-Colin and with the LS3 zones. I'm so stoked for more of the same, and it helps that SFD rules these days and playing with them is so much fun :3:

Attuning puts all attunements on 3 seconds. With weaver, if you want to be purely in one attunement, you have to use the same attunement twice. If you're in air/water, you use FA to be in fire/air, and use FA again after cooldown to be all fire.

The difference between launch and now is like night and day. Despite what the outdated OP states, dungeons are no longer the most challenging content, between fractals and raids you'll have plenty to sink your teeth into, and builds and roles have been refined a ton. While there's still no traditional trinity, each person in an organized group will have a very specific role. Basically what I'm saying is give this game another shot.

whatever someone thinks about the story, the actual gameplay from the recent living story content has been great and if arenanet is going to give us 5 gigantic zones set in my favorite place from guild wars 1 along with giving us cool new elite specs and a fun way to travel then i can manage to stay excited for literally all of 2 months

That was an outdated copy/paste from the official Anet source in 2012, literally no one has pointed it out in 5 years so I missed it. It's now changed, PM me next time rather than me finding out in your post like this ;) I go through a lot of effort to keep the OP updated despite the fact no one reads it.

Did I misread all the signs?
I am happy to see that it sounds like the story is getting switch up a bit. I'm sure a 'dragon checklist' expansion system could have been decent, but it's nice to have some variety. I wonder who the front-runners will be to replace ol' Balthbaby if we end up giving him the Abbadon treatment. Does Kormir have any descendants just in case?

Sweet, I'll talk to my friend and get his tag. He doesn't have HoT or even an 80 so that will limit the content he can do. I'll probably get him HoT and PoF next time they're on sale for a gift or something.
