Rev is the most interesting of the two and the Renegade spec is unbelievably good, imo.

Guardian is fine but take a while to blossom, I think.

Rev is more forgiving for a newer player, too, since it doesn’t need to be as proactive with survival.

A word of warning: heavy armor doesn't really mean much. If you want to smash your face against an emeny while holding a big fuckoff sword, I'd suggest reaper (necro) as the way to go.

For heavy armor classes though, Guardian has a lot of useful builds and skills and does a lot of things well, especially in groups. It's arenanets favorite child.

Yeah it's funny that Warrior has the highest HP and armor but is not even close as survivable as Necro or Renegade.

Since they nuked the Spellbreaker sustain build, there's nothing about Warrior that appeals to me.
Even the anime gun sword is kinda lame.

I've been using my shouty warrior build for basically a decade now, and it's extremely survivable. Damage isn't amazing because I'm using dual swords (because they look cool) with berserkers, but I can soak up so much damage/conditions.

Since you have a ranger already, and are looking for a forgiving build I'm gonna suggest this:

I've been playing this as a main for a good bit now, and I have yet to find a game mode that it isn't at the very least decent in, some of which it is absolutely fantastic. Best all around build I've played in a very long time.

I will second untamed for open world, it is a really fun spec with a great feedback loop for your skills, tons of survivability, and great burst. It’s a pain in the rear end to play in organized group settings like strikes, partly because your pet skills don’t auto cast so it’s way too button mashy.

Thirding untamed in open world things, and it's easy to transition to soulbeast for group content

I realised I had a spare 80 boost just lying around, so my level 30 male Sylvari Necro is now my 2nd Necro 80 - and he's now a Harbinger. Man, this specialisation is so much fun even though I don't really know what I'm doing. Pew motherfucking pew.

Ibram Gaunt
Jul 22, 2009

I like Warrior but it really does feel way squishier than it should be. Also feels impossible to play Berserker for open world content which is a bummer because I like the gameplay flow but it's way too frustrating for me in practice solo. I spent a few weeks as Spellbreaker and that was fun, but the damage wasn't particularly high although it was survivable which was fun getting the timing down for the counter. Bladesworn is something I love conceptually but the actual moveset for the gunsaber itself isn't very fun and the whole iai gimmick while fun to see giant numbers, is also pretty boring and rote since it's the same thing over and over.

Ort

It’s sad when something you love conceptually doesn’t translate into playing it. Specter and virtuoso are my two ideal class archetypes, I love shadow mages/night themed classes, survivability, and purple but just do not enjoy specter at all. The animations for scepter 3 feel so “wooshy” for lack of a better word, and every skill has a significant delay between button press and effect, so nothing feels impactful to me. The numbers are there but I’m bummed I can’t get into it.

Virtuoso is like if I could write my ideal class on paper but something doesn’t translate for me there, either. Could be I was doing pvirt and need to try a condition build, or it could also be I was just not feeling Mesmer the week that I tried it even though it’s my most played profession.

Meanwhile I’m having a blast on untamed and scourge, two elite specs I’d never even give a second look to had I not tried them out of boredom.

That's right! I'm the counting sheep, Meeko. And I'm a proper sheep youkai!

Warrior is in a strange case where, on paper, they should be highly survivable (highest HP pool combined with best armor class), but the problem is that in open world content, the measure of your survivability is your sustain - incoming damage is constant, and your risk of being oneshot is generally fairly low. Further compounding this, between the high amount of condition damage in open world combined with the extra warrior armor not being actually THAT big of a deal (especially since the real way to bolster your eHP is the tankier sets like Trailblazer), their survivability benefits which are fantastic in content where you have dedicated supports are somewhat moot in open world. You're left with a class who generally has poor access to sustain, and the only way to actually be survivable on it is thusly Might Makes Right, which in turn means a considerable damage hit and always needing to dedicate a portion of your kit to might generation.

This is kind of magnified further if you want to play a power build, because whilst condition builds get access to Trailblazer's and hybrids have the always fantastic Celestial, power has no good access to toughness. Pretty much only bladesworn can kind of make Cavalier's work, and there's unfortunately no power precision ferocity toughness stat combo so your next best option is Knight's which is. Well. It's Knight's.

Warrior had 3 years as the top class. Then HoT came and introduced so many new area effects and condis that the class lost its footing and never really regained. Personally, I’m okay with warriors having their time in the sun and are now mid tier.

The gunsabre really does have the capacity to do a cool "ooh" finishing move around noobs like me who are plunking at a hp sponge but likewise when the thing misses it's like you swaggered in there with a cocky wink "allow me" and swirled a pistol around in your finger before dropping it and shooting yourself in the crotch. The red hot embarrasment I feel when I wind up an attack and it misses is intense if anyone sees it.

Meeko
Sep 15, 2017

That's right! I'm the counting sheep, Meeko. And I'm a proper sheep youkai!

it's not even that warrior is bad with the good builds, might makes right really is a good sustain engine, but most of their options are just so bad, and a lot of this is because anet absolutely refuses to buff utlity/CC-leaning weapons damage in PvE only. also warrior has a horrid lack of access to something like battle scars. just give them battle scars anet. or something.

like c'mon, hammer's CC lean is generally not useful in PvE, at least let it do 90% of the damage of axe/axe. rifle has literally never been good, just let it do 90% of axe/axe and call it a day. and the time has way come and gone for hundred blades to have a much, much shorter animation lock. fuckin grave digger is excessively slow and that's only 1.25 seconds compared to hundred blades bein fuckin 3.5!

and then there's weapons like offhand mace that should really apply some sort of unique debuff for a short period of time/for the next X hits in pve or something, vuln stacks capping at 25 means most of those vuln-focused weapons just dont work like they're meant to.

LordAdakos
Sep 1, 2009
It's my strongly held belief (possibly a wrong and bad belief) that anet should go through and equalize the autoattacks for every single weapon/summon/kit so it all does around 8k damage at lvl 70 with no buffs.

This way they aren't completely gutting playstyles or options.

Ranged weapons can take a 5-10% damage penalty, CC heavy weapons can do the same.

Anything outside of autoattacks is considered bonus damage or utility skills.

There we go. I fixed every single class. Hire me, Anet, you cowards.

MajorBonnet

I don't have much faith in anet's ability to balance the game, but that's partly because balancing the game is a very difficult problem.

Also partly because they gut the small (admittedly strong) roles that some classes have in the current meta, eg spellbreaker boon strip and ele meteor shower, while ignoring how eg Guardian, dominates everywhere.

Oh, and also just having a big balance patch instead of incremental meaningful changes. Definitely not a recipe for disaster.

After messing around in the pvp lobby with mechanist, I was like oh hell yea I’ll use my booster on this and go to pound town right away. Little did I know you can’t pick your elite spec until you get enough hero points. I googled the best way to get them and it said to go to Heart of Thorns and do 3 hero point events. I get there and I can’t get around without gliding so I have to unlock that. Now it wants me to unlock mushroom hopping or something to access the next part of the story so I’ve spent a long time just doing events.

All that’s to say is now I have a guardian at level 48 and I’m having fun again :)

That's some insanely rude advice. Heart of Thorns HP are some of the toughest in the game, and getting around is miserable even after getting the glider. End of Dragons has enough Commune points in the open in the first zone that you can easily get the 30 you need to unlock the Mech, then use the Mech to tank the mobs for nearly everything else.

Also for HoT HPs, people regularly run massive groups through them. Look for "HoT HP Train" in LFG. You'll need gliding for sure and usually a raptor mount to keep up with the pace, but you'll get 250-300 HP in an hour or so.
