You manage to pick a route around the tomb-like seat of Mammon, slogging through the mud flats and swamps until you find a large set of steps, presumably leading to the next Hell. As you appoach though, a great blue dragon--presumably subjugated by Mammon--swoops down, landing on the ground with a great crash, sending great trails of mud splashing up into the air. “Who dares tread upon the ground of the great Lord Mammon? You shall perish for defiling his domain!” it hisses, electricity crackling in it’s very breath. It then beats its wings, taking off again, hovering above ground, ready to engage in combat. As Marcus, Silenna, Iada and Merritt - an angel of vengeance! - draw the beast's attention, Arka looses both arrows, each finding purchase in the softer skin between scales in the dragon's neck. Having gathered the measure of her prey, she summons Sehanine's mercy for the beast, and pulls another two arrows for immediate delivery. The first arrow strikes her previous wound in the neck and its twin follows a hairsbreadth away, sinking deep into dragon flesh. She nods to herself as she pulls yet more arrows, zeroing in her next shot.

The dragon hisses as it is torn into by your attacks, though it is able to shake off Silenna's domination before acting. It flies up even higher off the ground and away from the group of enemies and breathes out a stream of pure lightning, arcing to Merritt, Arka and Gladys. Though they are able to dodge the majority of the attack, they still get hit with some of the shock. It then lets out a loud roar, causing a great thunderous clap in the cluster of its foes. Damaging Iada causes the dragon to feel her rebuke, and the pain bloodies the dragon, which only seems to embolden its resolve. It lets out another breath attack, again targeting Merritt, Arka and Gladys. The dragon roars again, half in pain and half from endorphins, "Fools, Agenel shall not fall today. Mammon shall give me strength!" Off Turn: Instinctive Lightning - The dragon can fly up to its speed and use Lightning Burst. This movement does not provoke OAs. With her head clear, Iada rushes to the far side of dragon, shouting the few words she knows of draconic (all vulgarities) as she unleashes a slew of dark, glowing, green tentacles from her sword. Arka - PDF Turning her shoulder to blunt Agenel's static breath, Arka chides the dragon with a simple, "Tch." Arrows set in her bow, she aims at a nonsensical position - directly into the ground? Her shadow lengthens, flattens impossibly, and when it touches Agenel's it snaps with a leathery pop, tearing the slight elven woman into a million black scraps. Instantly from atop Agenel, a shadow Arka rises, her colors coming up to full in the same instant the arrows are released, stabbing themselves into the tendons connecting dragon to wing! Seizing the moment, she pulls another two arrows and lets them fly into the same spot, hoping to drive the insult home. Powerful winds form around the archer, pushing the dragon down toward her allies, hopefully into range for their attacks. "One dragon! Coming down!" she yells downward with the enthusiasm of a farm girl bringing a prize pig home for slaughter. -----

Merritt shrugs off the dragon's electric blasts, with support from Iada. Once the sparks clear from the air, Merritt returns to the air to meet the beast. He drives his blade into the beasts neck and bellows "In the name of Torm, I shall execute great vengeance upon thee for your misdeeds! My sword shall become drunk with your blood!" He withdraws his blade and plunges it back, once more, into soft gap between the dragon's scales. "There shall be no justice without order! Your actions and your lords are in full view of the Lord Torm." Hearing the beast's death wails, he gently returns to the ground and sheathes his sword to deliver something of last rites to the dying creature. "Your evil deeds borne of your wicked heart ensnare you, and your sins hold you fast. For lack of discipline, you die - led astray by your own folly. Agenal lets out a final roar as he crashes to the ground, sending up a spray of earth, the blood pouring from its chest mixing in with the mud on the ground. After the dragon expires, you are able to walk around its corpse and down the long, spiraling staircase to the volcanic Phlegethos, the next layer. After walking down a seemingly endless number of stairs--about six miles--you finally arrive in Phlegethos. Phlegethos looks like the very stereotype of Hell; volcanos of various size everywhere, with magma pouring from the miles-high ceiling in places. The very air ripples from heat distortion. Dead in the center of the hell you see the city of Abriymoch built of crystal and hardened magma in the caldera of a once great volcano, with a sharp, jagged palace built of obsidian--the seat of Fierna, the archduke and her controlling father Belial--looming over the city. As you trek forward towards the other end of the hell, you are hailed by a small group of legion devils. The leader addresses you, "Halt travelers! We come sent by Lady Fierna and mean you no harm. She has heard of your exploits and would summon you to her palace in Abriymoch. It would be in your... best interests... to accept this audience with her..." Silenna Silenna did not bother to remove her snakeskin upon the death of the dragon. The Hells had become increasingly uncomfortable and cumbersome to her humanoid shape - letting her serpentine form take care of the navigation was therefore the easiest option. It does, however, lead her to rear back in the presence of the legions. She couldn't speak with her companions in her state, but her non-verbal communication was clear as day. The Warden wanted no further deals with devils, and was ready to end the squadron in a decisive, bloody strike before they could report back to their infernal mistress.

Saint Gladys - PDF - Reference When the dragon falls Gladys swiftly springs into action. No plate of armor is too heavy, no set of straps too tedious, no personal space too personal. She mothers the hell out of the injured, taking care to sooth the terrible static burns and to calm and massage twitching muscles with a delicate, practiced thoughtfulness. If Arka or Marcus require any care then there may even be a discreet kiss on the cured wound to sooth lingering pain, as it were. Or just on the forehead, for precious good done today. "If there is no joy in the condemning, let me rejoice in the redeeming." She won't be stopped! And to cap the sentiment off she pauses to pray for and consecrate Agenal's remains with simple, sincere rituals and one of Sune's hymns. "A creature of primal beauty..." She misses while setting a thin circle of salt. Any good attitude Gladys had swiftly sprang out of her mind as she entered the traditional boiling Hell. The polite smile in her face masks some mild irritation that creeps into her voice as she calls from the middle of the group, turning around. "Dear Warden?" She uses a finger to beckon Silenna down for a whisper. "We have already endured two Devil's deals, that our labor is more important than black marks upon dignity. I believe at this point our shining steel is already dirtied. More mud will not change that... let us hear them out, at least." A whisper to be kept from their devilish escort, these sentiments are shared with the entire group. Gladys smiles and looks to the others to deliver their response. Merritt readily welcomes Gladys' restorative touch. Ever the gentleman, he politely removes his armor for her to soothe his twitching muscles. For the walk to Phlegethos, he keeps his wings open to occasionally fan his fellow adventurers. By the time the group is addressed by their devilish welcoming committee, he swore he was swimming in his leathers. The uneasiness he felt deep in the pit of his stomach from being around such intense evil was becoming a familiar sensation, not unlike feeling ill after a poorly cooked meal. He sees Silenna poised and ready to strike and immediately tenses up. "I should agree with Gladys. A full repentance for our cooperation with these beings can be done after we have finished our work. We have pure intentions and do not seek personal gain from these deals." He shifts his weight between his feet and speaks in more practical terms, as he would have in his earlier mortal days. "Furthermore, we are in their territory. We have bested the previous beasts in combat, but this is not an opportune time to press an issue. Surely these messengers would be noticed and missed if we were to attack."

Silenna She's not happy with it, but Silenna coils back in on herself, reluctantly accepting the others' admonishments. It wasn't even the purity of her soul she was worried about, in this particular case. But as much as she loathes it, the practicality of the issue at hand wins out over her instinct to slay. She'll follow; for now.

Iada Kilcis -- Character Sheet PDF Mildly displeased with herself for not positioning herself better between her allies and the dragon, Iada grumpily declines most of Gladys' ministrations. She starts to clean off her armor, then realizes with the wet mud everywhere there isn't much point to it, and moves on, dirt-encrusted greaves and all. === Iada sighs at the approach of the devils. "Another day, another infernal bargain; when we're done here, remind me to show you guys what it's like to deal with them when they're in your plane, instead of vice-versa; it goes a lot differently."

Assassins-Bane, Foe-Ender, Champion of the Moonsea!; Bard|Scholar, War Chanter, Sage of Ages! Arch-Bard Marcus's PDF Arch-Bard Marcus's Orokos sheet After the battle: "Hail Merritt the Dragonslayer!" Marcus cries, raising his shining songblade aloft. "Even in the depths of hell do our legends grow!" He spends the rest of the journey through the layer trying to weave the tale of this battle into his existing songs about Merritt. The process takes time, but he will happily spend some of that time regaling the party with songs of the rest of Merritt's deeds. He hopes it will bolster them long enough to make it through this sordid business. And if any demons hear, Marcus reasons, then all the better. I can heal too with Majestic Word, if anyone still needs it after Gladys is done. At the meeting: "We would be delighted to accept, of course," Marcus tells the envoy, with his usual diplomatic smile. "If I might ask, what exploits of ours has your master heard of us? As I'm sure you know, tales can change in the telling, so I wouldn't want such a gracious host to get the wrong impression of us."

"We have heard you have slain a strong group of demons invading, and obviously know you have killed the dragon guarding the entrance to our layer of hell," the legion devils say as they lead you to Abriymoch. As you travel through the city's winding roads through buildings made of various volcanic byproducts, suspicious devils glare at you through their windows. The entrance to the palace is a tall door made of solid obsidian, just like the rest of its jagged body. The interior is likewise made of obsidian, except the hallways and floors are polished and smooth, the ceilings arching up high above you, lit by everburning wall sconces. You enter the throne room, illuminated by a large hanging chandelier in the center of the room and large braziers along the walls on the floor. Lady Fierna, a humanoid of fair complexion and with only a few slight devilish features (slight enough to appear more human than even a Tiefling), sits on a large throne centered in the back of the room, again made of solid obsidian. A smaller, yet still imposing seat sits empty to her left. The legion that led you in takes positions around edges of the room. Fierna address you with a wide smile, "Hello, adventurers, and welcome to Abriymoch! I am the fair Lady Fierna, ruler of this beautiful Hell. You may ask why I have summoned you here, and where my father Belial is... and the answers are related. Ever since I assumed the throne here in Phlegethos upon his demotion, my father has been over my shoulder, every step of the way not so subtly 'guiding' my actions with never ending commands and orders, using me and controlling me to command this Hell as though it is still his own. "Well, my friends, today is the day that stops! I am going to assume my full and rightful control over this layer of Hell, with your help. I would ask that you... incapacitate... my father, such that I can relegate him to the prison in this very palace. In exchange for your help, I can put in word to my friend Lady Glasya on Malbolge, the Sixth Layer to allow you a safe and easy passage through, in addition to safe passage through the rest of Phlegethos. "When you are ready, my father will be out behind the palace, shaping magma into his own small creations, something he seems to enjoy doing. You should feel emboldened that he has been weakened since he lost full control of Phlegethos, and is not as formidable of a foe as he once was. "And one more thing before you go... I would ask that you please do not kill him... I do not wish him dead, just to leave me alone to rule for myself. And please, you may feel free to ask questions if you so choose."

For once, Merritt is grateful for his limited experience in politics. He manages to keep a look of distaste from his face as the devil speaks by occupying his mind considering how lengthy of prayers he will need to do once this excursion is completed. He chooses to remain silent, as he cannot summon any constructive words to add to the conversation.

Silenna Silenna does not revert from her serpentine form even in Fierna's throne room. The Warden remains tensely silent during the devil's offer; though her eyes turn to Gladys once she finishes. Snakes are typically not the most expressive animals, but the giant animal's tongue slips out with a soft hiss during the glare, as if to say: "I told you this was a bad idea." While she relished the chance to destroy yet another devil, if they had to continue to make deals like this without time to recuperate, they would find Asmodeus only at the end of their power and be unable to provide a proper front against the Cloven. Of course, there was no way to communicate this to the group, even if she were in her human form - Fierna would simply engage them in battle anyway if they refused, she suspected. So she could only hope her companions could come to the same conclusion.

Assassins-Bane, Foe-Ender, Champion of the Moonsea!; Bard|Scholar, War Chanter, Sage of Ages! Arch-Bard Marcus's PDF Arch-Bard Marcus's Orokos sheet In his mind, Marcus knows that these are devils, incarnations of evil that seek only to control and corrupt. But his heart feels just the same as it did when his teenaged daughter Deandra said she hated him, lashing out at his admittedly overbearing attempts to help her deal with some youthful relationship troubles. "My fair Lady," he addresses her formally, with a flourishing bow. "I daresay your beauty even surpasses that of your realm, something I had not thought possible before this moment. Yes, we will go to your father. As someone who has had to learn the hard way to respect the independence of his children, I am heartbroken by this situation. I will do my best to resolve it and bring some peace to your family." He gives a subtle signal only his old friend Gladys would recognize, scratching the side of his nose in the secret sign they would always use in their younger days when up to mischief. Marcus indicates to her that they should discuss this in private, and hopefully the rest of his companions pick up on it as well. Orbs fucked around with this message at 20:11 on Feb 5, 2018 |

Saint Gladys - PDF - Reference Insight 36 to judge Fierna's intent/honesty. And her fashion. Look Around You posted:She seems genuine in wanting to be out from under her fathers thumb. She also seems like she would hold up her end of the deal and get you through the 6th without a hassle. She is dressed very fashionably and looks downright pretty for a devil. Listening with polite reverence, Gladys dares not jeopardize the diplomatic proceedings with her building irritation. Had Asmodeus returned to his domain and sent messengers, that every Lord of Hell might inquire as to the errand boy capabilities of his pursuers?! Had Mammon sent the Dragon because they ignored his no doubt unreasonably insidious power-play? And now to see this charming woman speak so casually of usurping family and the sanctity of home as though she were setting a dog out in the woods... Marcus' signal is a welcome distraction! IC Channel posted:: Under the guise of discussing the Lady of the Fourth's offer with her comrades, Gladys responds to Marcus' signal and speaks to him in private. Her cordial smile has been replaced by clear irritation. "Even in Hell the children are uniquely devilish! I've half a mind to report her to her father and let him sort out his own house. Such disrespect..." She folds her arms and fumes. Hope renewed, Gladys only briefly wondered how improbable a task lay before them. Fitting, then, that they should do something impossible to be heroes of legend. What was one bond between beings of pure maliciousness before their overarching task of saving creation itself? Still, she would need to mentally arm herself... anything more complicated than being their toadies or the agents of their demise demanded speaking with the infinitely clever devils heart-to-heart. She considered all she could possibly know of Belial, his realm and his daughter... Religion 41. Look Around You posted:Belial is the former ruler of Phlegethos, though after The Reckoning (the rebellion against Asmodeus by various other lords of Hell), he was demoted and his daughter was appointed as the ruler instead. Belial still rules in practice, though Fierna has been attempting to get out from under his thumb lately. He's... not friendly towards Asmodeus, but he's not going to actively rebel against him. He is, however, considering action against Glasya (lord of the 6th; Asmodeus' daughter) who he believes is edging Fierna to push for more independence. He's also put some of his schemes against his enemies (mainly Levistus, lord of the 5th) on hold due to trying not to provoke his daughter. It's important to note that Fierna is the rightful ruler of this layer and Belial knows that and accepts it begrudgingly. She imparts what the finest religious minds in the realm know of the snippets of Hell's "recent" history to Marcus(and in turn to the entire group on the sly) and the brief summary of the relationships of the party's at play here. Most likely deduced from the writings of cultists who simply act along these lines, their schemes exposing the hands their masters play at. Knowledgeable, she must also be forearmed for the kerfuffle about to ensue. Gladys summons up a distant memory of when her husband was still alive and out on business, many years after they met and when their three children had begun growing into darling little angels. At the point where anything outside of home was immensely interesting, they'd been taking to reading tales of adventure at sea with naval warfare, daring explorations, exotic discoveries and outrageous pirates. So it was that one night her boys Cedric and Walter had ruined a chair to forge peg-legs, two dresses for the scraps for scarfs and locked her in the pantry, declaring that the wench would walk the plank in the morrow. When their older sister returned home Gladys was freed and the two outlaws felt the wrath of twin tanned hides, putting a soft fear of corsairing that Cedric still carries to this day! This was it. Just the right amount of righteous motherly wrath. Hands at her sides, Gladys strode confidently past the group and their host, directly towards the garden, passing by any number of devils looming about to see them complete their task and through the heated malevolence of the grand palace, casting open a double-door to the garden with one furious palm thrust! She looks about to be certain Belial is here and waits a practiced beat for him to notice her as well, passing her hands along one another for a second and smoothing down the front of her robes. Then she raises her head a bit, nose high, and walks to him unhesitantly, stopping before his presumed earth-working station. "Lord Belial, venerated master of the fourth." She speaks with a tight-lipped smile. "It is a pleasure to meet you, as a guest of your home. I am Gladys Adler, adherent of Sune. I must ask... if you are aware of what your daughter is up to?" "If you have not heard, I am sure that it is only because a lord of your caliber lacks much fear. I make no judgment about whether or not you should be afraid of your daughter, but I would ask that you hear me and my friend out. I think we can sculpt a fine image of the future together, one that will work for all parties. What do you think?"

Iada Kilcis -- Character Sheet PDF As soon as she heard the devil's offer, Iada felt some relief come over her. "Oh, thank Selune; one beat-up devil in exchange for two layers. Maybe even stop for a rest in the next area, before we clear out the last of this journey..." until she hears Gladys and Marcus demurring. Barely managing to maintain her stoic mask, she starts admonishing in an angry whisper "are you kidding me?! You want to help two devils better combine their resources? This isn't an angry peasant and his daughter having a spat on their pastoral farm, it's the Lord of Pain and the Lady of Domination debating who gets to rule Abriymoch on the rim of the caldera in the Hall of One Thousand Sighs and Screams. Have you lost all..." and as they turn the corner seeing Belial himself, immediately schools her face into a soldiers grimace and takes a position behind and between the Saint and her paramour, looking vaguely annoyed and slightly bored.

Belial, kneeling down to perform his crafting, slowly places the obsidian flower he was working on onto a table in front of him and stands up, turning towards you. "No... I have not heard of anything my daughter is planning. Is there something you would care to... enlighten me about?" he asks in a calm but slightly concerned tone.

Saint Gladys - PDF - Reference Seeing somebody forging something that wasn't made of sins, souls or back-handed deals was what the good clergy referred to as "beauty in the moment", but Gladys was all business! "No sooner have we arrived in your realm than we are offered a deal most foul, to dispose of you!" Her tone is serious, yet concern creeps in as she continues. "It is as we grow older that perhaps, the next generation feels we may be a bit in the way. She thinks you obstruct her and asked that we... imprison you... like an unwanted hound." "Children can be very unfair." She lets her hands drop to a more saintly posture, held together in front of her waist. "Has it been difficult for her to lead?" Belial's guard drops upon hearing Gladys' concern. "Yes... she has needed much guidance. She spends most of her time in communication with Glasya, Asmodeus' daughter. Glasya has been encouraging her to become... let's say... more 'independent' lately, though she does not know how to lead, to rule. She ignores our cults and cares not for much other than her own fashion and appearance!" he says, his voice rising in clear anger at his daughter. "She wastes precious time and resources that we could be using to encourage our cults or scheming against our enemies down here to pretty up her wardrobe to impress her friend Glasya! I just don't get it!" he says, as he begins pacing. "She used to be so obediant! But now with Glasya in the picture, she has been doing more and more behind my back. It's not right!" he says, stomping left and right.

Arch-Bard Marcus's PDF Arch-Bard Marcus's Orokos sheet "I know this frustration all too well," Marcus says, hands on his hips and shaking his head. "One of my own daughters has had associates I disapproved of, as well. While she never tried to get adventurers to imprison me, at least as far as I know, I can certainly say I suffered for trying to control her. I've come to realize that often we must give our children the independence they seek... even if that independence leads to mistakes." He sighs as sympathetically as he can, much of it genuine as he thinks about Deandra and wonders what she is up to. "I know ruling a realm of hell complicates the issue a bit, but have you tried talking to her about this? I can't speak for her, but it seems to me like she's trying to use her friendship with Glasya to advance her position. Perhaps she wants the same thing you do, and is going about it in different ways?"

Arka - PDF Arka spends much of the time after the fall of Agenel sulking like the young elven adult she appears to be, half in her elven shape and half as her snowy owl form circling overhead. The number of arrow-riddled devils was markedly lower than it should have been, and increasing all the time. In Belial's throne room though, Fierna's offer sparks hope in her breast. She would get to slake her growing need to ventilate a devil, and their group would grow markedly closer to their ultimate goal. It is only with years of discipline that she can restrain an outburst and keep her features still when she hears Gladys and Marcus plotting against Fierna only seconds outside of her earshot. When they meet Belial, she observes from the back rank. She had realized many lifetimes ago that she was little more than a eternally reborn farmwoman, but long lifetimes of practice had taught her how to spot trouble for a thousand paces away. Wisdom was knowing how and when to apply your particular set of skills to the problem.

Merritt finds himself pondering what he has watched unfold. He had seen some unusual things in his lifetime, but a family meeting amongst devils was certainly the strangest. He musters up a polite smile and takes his leave of the family, as he would any nobles in the mortal realm. "We certainly wish you all the best."

Belial and Fierna both head back inside the palace to discuss matters privately and allow you to continue on through the Hells. After some time, you reach the connection between Phlegethos and Stygia, a long flow of hardened magma. As you walk down the ramp, it slowly becomes ice covered, before turning into a series of steps made completely of ice. Stygia is mostly dark and extremely frigid. The hell consists of a large frozen sea with icebergs dotted around it. In the 'sky' you notice greenish-blue auroras floating, casting soft light down below. Heavy snow and freezing rain pelt you as you traverse the sea from iceberg to iceberg. About midway through the Hell, you see what has to be the biggest iceberg in the layer, though it is totally clear. Inside it is trapped the archduke for this layer, Levistus, a male humanoid with skin as pale as the snow. Hundreds of ice devils work on the outside of the iceberg with chisels to attempt to free their master, though for every inch they clear, another inch freezes overtop of it. You are able to continue through the layer unnoticed, as the attention of the devils here is entirely to free their ruler. At the other side of the Hell you find a series of icy caverns. You enter one and walk for miles and miles, the ice slowly disappearing and the temperature rising to a comfortable level along with it as you wind down towards Malbolge, the sixth layer and home to Glasya, daughter of Asmodeus. Malbolge, on its surface, looks beautiful, unlike any of the layers above. It is lit up by large yellow lanterns hanging from the ceiling which look like suns. There is lush green grass, large trees with bright green leaves, beautiful gardens filled with purple flowers, reflecting pools and great, pure white castle. [Passive Religion]: This layer of hell was once a great garden of a forgotten deity that ruled this sphere before Asmodeus displaced him. [Passive Perception]: Upon closer inspection, the trees roots seem to be grasping, the wood warped and twisted. The flowers are poisonous and emit a subtle, toxic oder. The reflecting pools themselves are filled with poison as well, and the castle appears to have corpses hung about the battlements as 'decorations'. As you pass the castle, a loud, female voice calls to you, "So. I hear you want to kill my father." You turn to the source of the voice and see a beautiful woman with golden skin and fiery red hair approaching you. Look Around You fucked around with this message at 22:18 on Feb 25, 2018 |

Arch-Bard Marcus's PDF Arch-Bard Marcus's Orokos sheet Marcus smiles at the lady and bows to her... though he makes sure to keep her in his peripheral vision the whole time, watching for any sudden movements. "If you have heard that," he calls back, "then you may have also heard that we seek to avoid killing when we can. Who, might I inquire, is asking?" The bard can already guess, but even in Hell his instinct for manners has not left him. In fact, Marcus now views it as a challenge to his diplomatic prowess to see how long he can maintain the facade of not being disturbed and disgusted by the sights he has seen here.

Arch-Bard Marcus's PDF Arch-Bard Marcus's Orokos sheet "I thank you for the introduction, obvious though it may have been. I am Marcus Gallantara. Some of my companions might not wish me to spread their names around myself, though I am sure their identities are similarly obvious to you." He folds his hands before himself as he sizes up Lady Glasya, possibly his most formidable opponent yet. "Lady Fierna says hello, by the way." "Anyway, I apologize for being coy, but even wanting your father 'gone' may be too strong. Simply put, he has something we need. If we can take it from him without upsetting the balance of power here more than we already have, then we will do that." Though upsetting the balance of power more would be pretty fun, Marcus continues to himself. He might not normally be even this open about his goals, but after seeing the heroes around him in action, he is feeling confident. Overconfident...? Impossible. "So, knowing this, will you allow us to pass? Your realm is beautiful indeed, but while we don't have a deadline as such, time is still a concern, so we cannot tarry long."
