Saint Gladys - PDF - Reference

Stepping back from the encroaching zealots, Gladys raises her symbol and begins to intone a most serious upbraiding of Bane and those that enforce such a cruel will. Overcome by the darkness in this place and the approaching paladins, she instead falters, only brandishing unfocused divine energy that settles upon the battlefield... but only briefly. At Marcus' inspiration she brandishes the power enough and forces repentance onto one of the knights.

Move: Shift to G7.
Standard: Remorse on E9. Misses both Paladins. Daze Self. Marcus and Merritt can spend a Healing Surge if they'd like. If they do so they gain +2 Attack UEOMNT and can Shift 1 OR gain +2 AC/Reflex USONT.

With Sevit's decisive storms of fire, her priority target seems smothered, so Arka spins to fire at the paladins accosting the backline. Sir Merritt stands between the two remaining foes, but perhaps one less would not be amiss. Pulling another wicked triple-headed arrow she takes aim at a gap in the falling Paladin's armor...

... an icy wind tears the hood of her cloak away and whips into her hair, pulling the loose braid she had woven there undone and sending her black tresses flying behind her. This far north, what little exposed skin she has is beginning to pale and turn waxy, a bad sign. With gloved hands, she fixes her hood back into place, turning back towards the lazy sun. It had nearly dipped below the horizon, and when it did it would not return for weeks. The Northmen did not venture this far from civilization without immense trains of supplies, but Torra Ashbreeze had lived a hundred lives more foolhardy than this one, and no lich would escape just because he choose to hide in the deep Frozenfar. A piercing shriek cuts the air, and only luck saves her head from the monstrosities that sweep icicle sharp blades across the space her neck once occupied. Using their momentary overreach, she kickflips off the nearest to gain distance, shaking the frost from her bow in the process, and even as she lands she is lining up the killing blow...

... the arrow flies toward its target, taking the paladin in the weakest part of the armor between neck and shoulder. He clatters to the ground limply. Arka looks around hazily at the cathedral, still half remembering Torra's fight so many lifetimes ago...

However, with aid from his friends he exploits an opportunity when the paladin least expects. "Your end is merely the beginning of our work. An abyssal bolt flies from her hand, striking the paladin who challenged her squarely in the chest and knocking them through the dancing flame. A second one flies out but finds no purchase, and a third snakes around the paladin to smash into the back of their leg, driving them back into Silenna and Sevit's proximity.

You hear a deep, booming voice echo throughout the temple, "You think you can defeat me like you have that devil? You think your angel is going to protect you? You vastly underestimate the Lord of Darkness." The dead cleric's holy symbol--a three toed claw made of white gold--begins to glow a deep purple. The voice continues, yelling, "COME. FIGHT ME. COME KNOW THE POWER OF THE BLACK LORD. YOU SHALL LEARN NOTHING BUT DEFEAT. AND ANGEL! KNOW THAT I WILL PERSONALLY RIP THE WINGS OFF OF YOUR DEAD BODY JUST AS I WILL RIP THE HEAD OFF OF YOUR 'NOBLE' DEITY!"

As the last of the echos dissipates, the torches suddenly relight, while the holy symbol remains glowing around the cleric's neck.

She climbs to her feet and, after straightening her coat, the tip of her cane hits the floor again with a familiar tik. “Let’s take a look,” she says, and heads off, her tail swishing behind her.

Searching through the cleric's office, you find a large, locked safe hidden behind a false wall. The safe is easily unlocked by a key from the head cleric's body. Inside you find 12 Astral Diamonds in total (two each) and one level 24 magic item each. Finally, you also see a small, black book filled with various magical writing and runes, which Sevit immediately recognizes as the instructions on how to shift to Banehold. You have some time to make any preparations before you leave, if you so choose.

Like a warm breeze Gladys sweeps through the aftermath of the temple battle, inquiring as to everybody's physical and spiritual well being with quick lines of soothing from Sune's mantras. "In a defender's passion, the innocent are spared black malice." She takes careful stock of Merritt's wounds, subject as he is to the worst of the front line. ".. I am pleased you are filled with such courage, Ser Merritt. I found the attentions of a deity that does not love me to be quite upsetting.." And without fail she falls upon Sillena, Sevit and Artheon, tending to the latter as though he were a soldier as noble as any other! She even delivers the long awaited scale-brushing once she is satisfied he is mended!

Sevit and Marcus aren't able to escape Mother Gladness' attentions just because they're casing the joint for trouble! "Truly, your radiance is not done justice by the stories, Admiral." Her kind demeanor does not obstruct the need to help her ally make a forceful adjustment to her shoulder socket, resetting it with a practiced alignment and push. A healing prayer follows to calm the nerves. "And blessed are the noble, radiant above all others, valor the greatest sentiment of beauty."

Silenna sighs as she slips back into her human form. The aches she shrugged off in battle return with a sore vengeance, but she undergoes Gladys' tending stoically. Not so with Artheon, though who simply revels in the attention. <"See? I told you it's not all bad."> She shakes her head, letting him preen in Gladys' hands, while she stretches her legs a little by walking over to the group. "Have we a way into the plane of our enemy now? Let us make haste, then. The less time our enemy has to prepare, the better our chances."

Picked up Zephyr Boots. Flying snake! Also, Artheon officially will not get free attacks anymore, like RAW. He has been relegated to CA-provider for allies and denier for enemies. Also presuming we have at least a short rest, to recover encounter powers.

"I could get used to such glowing words, Gladys. And eloquent, too. Are you sure Marcus is the only bard here?" Sevit gives Gladys a sly look. When the tiefling makes overtures toward tending to her wound, Sevit takes a deep breath and relaxes. This is far from her first time getting a limb mended like this. She gives a little grunt of pain as her shoulder is popped back into place, but nary a word of complaint.

With the cleric's little black book in her hand and a new lapis lazuli-inlaid platinum ring on her finger, Sevit gathers everyone around her once they're done healing, being healed, and catching their breath. "We have the way to Banehold. It'll take me a couple minutes to make the portal, but be ready. Once it's open, we'll have just enough time to get through."

Assuming we're taking a short rest, going to spend 1 healing surge to top myself up. Took the item Ring of Focus, which'll make sustaining powers less taxing. Also changed a couple other things about Sevit since LAY said I could: in short, I'm better at skills, my earth-shattering kabooms are more precise (and very occasionally bigger), and sometimes when i light on fire i can light even more on fire.

It takes overlong for Arka to shake the cobwebs of her past life, but luckily the battle draws to a close as she is enthralled. While a part of her experiences the dreadful message Bane delivers via a profane relic, another part of her remembers a lifetime's worth of battles. She sinks to the floor with her head in her hands, her bow momentarily forgotten. Normally, her memories are distinct, but distant. Like a favorite book she read a season past, familiar, but imperfect as all memories are. Sometimes she is able to shake the feeling off before it sets in. But sometimes they mix like cheap liquors and bad food, filling her to bursting with... minutiae. A lifetime's worth of observation suddenly overlaid atop another lifetime, conflicting, refusing to obey order and sense.

When she rejoins her companions she looks no worse for wear, save perhaps an old woman's tired eyes, "I agree. We cannot let the Black Hand have any more time to prepare for our assault. But even if we catch him off guard, he is a decisive mind and we cannot underestimate him."

Sevit performs the incantations to open a deep, black portal to Banehold. Passing through it leads you to the outside of a great fortress made of blackened stone sitting in the middle of a desert made entirely of black sand, lying underneath a blood red sky darkened . It's enormous wrought iron gate is locked shut, while archers stand on the battlements with arrows nocked. “Welcome to Banehold!” a voice booms. You hear soft laughter before it continues, “And to your graves. I have been eagerly awaiting your arrival. Ah, but you think I will just come out and fight you? You are sorely mistaken. You must prove to me that you are even worthy of dying by my hand. And so, to the east, my trusted servant Fzoul Chembryl stands ready. To the west, the Dragon Queen Tiamat awaits your arrival, and finally, to the north waits my own consort Loviatar, who insisted she face you. I will be surprised if you even make it to me. Though I would be so disappointed if I do not get the chance to behead Torm’s favorite little angel.” After he finishes speaking, the gate slowly opens, clearing the way for you to enter.

You enter into the fortress through it's yawning gate and take an almost immediate left into the west corridor. You continue through the straight passageway lined with various statutes of dragons until you reach a giant door at the end of it. The group of you slowly push it open, revealing a large courtyard. Pillars decorated with intricate carvings of dragons encircling them hold a large overhang over the eastern part of the courtyard. Tiamat, the five-headed dragon queen, stands in the center of the courtyard. “I see Bane has sent me some fresh food to play with,” she says with a laugh. "Oh! And I see one of my daughters is here! You seek to challenge me? I would hate to have to hurt one of my children, even if you are but a halfblood..." She then takes off the ground with a loud growl, flying 40 feet into the air as she prepares for combat.

"I'm charmed that you'd claim me, Tiamat." Sevit calls back across the bleak expanse. "But then we have so much in common, don't we? Unfathomable power, a love for treasure, an unquenchable sense of pride. I look forward to testing myself against you." At that, Sevit rushes toward her foe. As she moves in, she opens her mind to the energies of the cosmos. Even in a place like Banehold, a place characterized by order and oppression, such energies flow unhindered. She has but to tap into them - to concentrate on them - and they manifest. The sky opens to a realm of pure cosmic brilliance, the fabric of Banehold parting just enough to let a single ray shine through. It beams down on Tiamat, a spotlight carrying at once unbearable solar heat and penetrating lancets of starlight. The portal nearly closes as soon as it opens - but an arcane sleight of hand lets Sevit keep it open a moment longer, producing a miniature comet that crashes into Tiamat at terminal velocity, scattering fiery debris into the air around her. The lingering arcana once again lets Sevit slip through space herself, translocating her ever closer to her species' progenitor.

"Then again, maybe your pride isn't what it once was. How did the Queen of Dragonkind end up as a lackey? Even the youngest dragon has no use for tyrants. How can the mother of all dragons stomach the commands of someone like Bane?"

Dashing forward, Arka snaps off a few arrows at the winged beast, trying to get a better position for subsequent shots. In her haste, two of the arrows are caught in the powerful downdrafts kicked up by Tiamat's flight and deflect harmlessly off her scales. The last manages to find purchase, a solid hit that foretells further punishment from the elven archer.

Surprising many (though not Tiamat, since she can't see it), Silenna surges forward and simply lifts her body off the ground, moving forward and taking the vulnerable goddess with a swift hiss as her scales fly off her body, transforming into small daggers that pierce the dragon's wings and eyes, forcing her to land.

Move: to R32-S33, 6 squares up. Artheon moves to Z41.

In the stark light of Gladys' spell, Tiamat looks downright pedestrian. Without a second thought, Sevit presses the attack, sending a flurry of abyssal bolts streaking toward the dragon goddess. Only some connect, but Sevit's already putting the rest of the plan in motion. She breaks into a run and surges forward, only relenting when she's close enough to touch her foe. She has something else in mind, though - a plan swiftly revealed when she taps a thick onyx ring on her finger. Both Sevit and Tiamat suddenly feel a gravitational force much more akin to a dying star than that of the typical habitable plane. Neither is able to move much like this. Sevit, however, scales gleaming platinum from her earlier invocation against Tiamat's attack and emanating draconic splendour, looks in the much better position than the magically mundanified Tiamat.

Arka does her best to dodge the streaks of lightning belched forth from Tiamat's maw, but even she is not faster than a storm bolt, and it ripples over and through her, leaving a charred blast upon the pillar behind her. She can spare the injury no thought, continuing to close the distance to her winged prey - Marcus's inspiring song strikes a chord in her old heart, sending her first shot true into a gap between the beast's scales while Sevit's demon-fires light the way for the second, striking the charred flesh at almost exactly the same spot.

"Lend me your eyes, my Lady," she invokes Selune's blessing, loosing another volley - while every arrow flies true, the thrashing dragon's hide manages to deflect the last, but not before wreaking a terrible wound her side.

As she's hit, Tiamat forces air at Silenna with her wings, aiming to ground the giant snake, though she is unsuccessful. Groping around, the massive five headed dragon unleashes a mighty blast of frozen wind from her white head, pushing back all that stand before her. Her blue head then roars, sending a lightning bolt arcing towards Silenna. It seems to trace its path directly towards her, striking her with a loud thunder clap and stunning her, sending her tumbling down to the ground!

Undeterred(and untargeted) by the explosive display, Gladys rallies the troops by raising her symbol higher and invoking renewed prayers, granting soothing vigor to Silenna and Marcus to bolster their continued offense. Returning the focus of the symbol to Tiamat, Gladys is contemplative for a moment before a small epiphany takes root in her mind. "Hidden in plain sight, I believe I see one connection even you must acknowledge, Dragon Queen." Imparting a pearl of Sune's wisdom unto her next prayer, Gladys recites a simple koan of the folly of fleeing the torments of the world...

"... when hate flows through her own heart." Gladys' symbol pulses and renews the severed divinity, this time cursing the five heads of Tiamat to blink and forget their trust in each other! As she goes silent following the recital, she imparts a new solemn oath to the final line and unleashes a warm, billowing tornado of ethereal golden flame to chase the dragon into the sky, bathing Silenna in the wave as well! Even in a time of mortality a new blessing of Sune emerges to free Silenna from her maladies! Gladys smiles in the final wake of the flames, close enough for just the two to share her next thought. "But I always liked the upbeat endings myself."

Arka keeps her pace measured as she continues to close distance to the massive dragon, letting another set of arrows fly. Each finds purchase in the beast's craggy hide, opening yet more wounds, but the Queen of Dragonkind does not seem even the slightest bit fazed. Her constant momentum forward is beginning to pay off; her allies see the shape of Arka begin to blur into shadows - only her outline for now, but growing by the second.
