The Glabrezu lays motionless on the ground, and looks as though it still won’t fully recover in the near future…
Saving Throw vs Daze: 1d20+2 8

The western Goristro swipes at Iada, though it misses and takes damage from Silenna’s venom. It too is unable to clear its head.
Standard: Slam vs AC (Iada): 1d20+26 34 4d10+14 44 - Take 10 from Silenna
Saving Throw: 1d20 9

The eastern Goristro also takes a swing at Iada, wildly missing and getting stung by the venom coursing through its veins. It also cannot overcome the poison, staying dazed even longer.
Standard: Slam vs AC (Iada): 1d20+26 27 4d10+14 35 - take 10 from Silenna

Saint Gladys - PDF - Reference

Walking calmly around the raging brawl, Gladys brings her hands together in prayer and watches the demons thrash about. "Even for creatures like you, there is hope of repentance and salvation. Be absolved of sin and greet a new existence... or be soon cast back unto the abyss." Separating her hands, Gladys intones for two separate hymns. One is a dirge of destruction, the other is praise to a champion. The miracles will come true when her allies call upon them!

Move: Move to H14
Standard: Prophecy of Doom upon the Glabrezu. An Ally that hits the Glabrezu with an attack may choose to make it a Critical Hit. Prophey of Doom lasts UEOMNT or the Critical Hit effect occurs. It's a choice to activate the Critical so I assume somebody with BIG DAMAGE is going to use this!
Minor: Holding a readied Favor of the Gods. If you are within Close Burst 3 of Gladys and miss an attack this round, you may reroll. This is one attack by one person. You must use the new result.

Iada Kilcis -- Character Sheet PDF

Iada deftly avoids a swing from the first goristro, turning and deflecting a shot from the second goristro and riposting with a sword pulsing with infernal power. She then turns and charges the chain around the western goristro with divine and arcane energies, again striking with her infernally-charged sword.

Reaction: Counterstrike Guards reaction attack vs. Goristro B: 1d20+31 44
Counterstrike Guards reaction damage on Goristro B: 5d8+37 62 fire damage that ignores resistances and immunities (forgot Marcus' +5 to dmg on initial roll, this includes vuln)

Minor action: Warlock's Curse on Goristro A
Move action: Divine Challenge on Goristro A (Goristro A is marked and will take 15 radiant and 13 fire damage if it makes an attack that doesn't include Iada, and that attack will be weakened)
Standard action: Eldritch Strike on Goristro A: 1d20+32 38
Eldritch Strike damage on Goristro A: 5d8+37 63 fire damage that ignores resistances and immunities (includes vuln)

In order of priority:
1) If goristro B misses her, Iada will use Touch of Command on it.
2) Iada will use her Strikebacks on the first goristro to successfully hit her in melee in the upcoming round

There is no escape.

Silenna

Rearing back, the giant snake takes a brief moment to stare down one of the goristro with a predator's gaze. Before long, however, she's on him, eviscerating the horned demon with a rapid series of bites just like she did the Hezrou. Moving past the collapsing demon, Arthion latches onto the other one as he slithers up to Iada's position.

Move: Silenna moves to B13-C14.
Standard; Silenna charges to H15-I16, using Savage Rend on Goristro A at 1d20+29=33. Hit for 2d8+5d6+21+1d10=53 damage. Goristro A dies.
Arthion charges to K18, attacking Goristro B at 1d20+28=48. CRIT for 18 damage. Goristro B and Glabrezu can't gain CA.
Free: Assassin's Shroud on Glabrezu.

In the midsts of the wide sweeps of her blade, Iada sees the Marcus moving surprisingly spryly for a geriatric bard. As his blade moves in and the beast moves to block, she sees the gaping hole in the beasts defenses lit up by his blade. Feeling Selune's light guiding her shots, she unleashes a withering volley of arrows at it. Gladys's encouraging song turns one arrow into a heartseeker, demonflesh parting beneath it like a ray of sunshine parting a dense bank of clouds. Landing several feet away from her launch, she favors the Tiefling with a farm girl's smile, full of warmth and joy, before once again adopting the hunter's mask.

The Glabrezu fights through the pain and snaps at Merrit with its pincers, the sharp claws closing around his entire midsection, crushing him momentarily. It goes to follow up with a second swipe, but Merritt is able to totally avoid it! It then manages to shake both poisons affecting him, but can’t get around Iada’s mark.

Saint Gladys - PDF - Reference

(Swapping Cloak of Courage as requested.)

Pacing around the remains of the short-lived clash, Gladys sings praise to Sune and bathes Iada and Merritt in radiant light. She stops beside Arka and returns the smile with a touch of pride, trying to put a closed-eye bit of good patience on this whole affair. "I hope our next task will not endear us to so detestable a partner. To hear this demon speak of our duty in such a manner is most unpleasant... I'm happy you can shoot his very words from the air, my little owl." Overflowing with good cheer for friend's heroic efforts Gladys simply raises her divine symbol and gestures at the Glabrezu, raw divinity bending light itself in a fractured flash across the gap between them. On impact it leaves seething golden cracks in his skin!

Standard: Astral Seal on Glabrezu. UEOMNT he has -2 Defenses. The next Ally to strike him regains 6 HP.

Silenna

As if a divine omen, Silenna comes crashing down onto the Glabrezu just as Merritt finishes his speech. Not even the creature's many arms can stop her feral attack, as she digs her teeth into the monster's jugular and tears it out like a knife through butter.

The gate to the abyss collapses as Silenna slays the Glabrezu in a brilliant flash of purple light, and with a final strike from Arka, the last goristro falls, it's back peppered in arrows. Your job done, you return to Bel, who congratulates you, “Well done, my new friends,” he says. “I am of my word, and you shall have passage to Dis. Be forewarned though, for Dispater will be nowhere near as… welcoming… as I have been to you, mortals.” With that, he the overgrown pit fiend lifts his leg and slams it on the ground, and immediately after, you hear the shrill, shrieking sound of metal grinding against stone in the distance.

You move through the great gate, which immediately shoots up behind you, and into a giant cavern. Cresting a small uprise in the floor of the cavern, the great Iron City of Dis floods into view, it's black iron buildings rising from each end of the cavern, the walls of which you need to strain your eyes to see for the distance. In the center of the city, towards the far end of the cavern, stands the imposing Iron Tower, the seat of Dispater, from which he rarely ventures. The path you’re on leads directly to the main gates of the large iron walls surrounding the city, with even larger watchtowers on either side of the gate. Beyond the city, directly behind the grand Iron Tower, you see the cavern continue to wind down below, further into the hells...

Arch-Bard Marcus's Orokos sheet

Marcus is practically a torrent of words and exclamations after the battle. He barely stops to thank Bel for his honor and graciousness before he is gushing again.

"That was simply incredible! Merritt, your wings are more beautiful than a thousand sunrises. Can you only manifest them in certain conditions? If not, you should display them all the time. Hiding such beauty is a crime!

"Arka, I barely caught a glimpse of your own self, but your effect on the fight was all the more unmistakable! Such perfect arcs flying over the heads of those of us in the melee!

"Iada, I had no fear of those beasts when you were next to me. It was as though we towered over them! I almost felt sorry for our foes.

"Silenna, you are absolutely majestic when you transform! You and Arthion make a truly awesome team!

"And, oh, sweet Gladys, none of this would have been possible without your beauty and grace to inspire us! I'm sorry you had to witness such brutality, though we at least made it short for you."

He spends as long as he can talking, lowering the volume to a whisper if necessary. In the middle of musing over some changes he could make to the Tale of the Lion of Torm, he interjects random details he remembers about the Iron City, which is unfortunately not much...

"It seems we will have to go through the city to progress, unfortunately. Shall we simply update our tragic backstory from before? About seeking vengeance for my murdered grandchild, this time against a demon in the third layer? Of course, I am definitely open to other ideas from such magnificent luminaries as yourselves."

You see no way around the city, as it stretches from wall to wall of the cavern. Dispater himself is reclusive and almost never leaves his inner sanctum in his citadel. That's not to say he does not have eyes and ears inside (and outside) of his city, and his main set of them is his consort, Lilis, the commander of his vast intelligence network. He is not one prone to hasty action and will plot and plan for ages before acting on anything other than rooting out suspected traitors due to his own intense paranoia.

Merritt Carlisle - PDF

Merritt dissipates his wings and re-sheathes his blade after thoroughly inspecting it. Upon hearing Marcus' effusive compliments, he finds himself flushing a deep enough shade of red that he could pass for a relative of Gladys'. "I, erm, appreciate your compliments, Marcus. To answer you, I can manifest my wings as I wish. I merely prefer to walk the earth in a less noticeable fashion."

He clears his throat and immediately changes the subject. "I would suggest against making too many changes to our initial story, lest it raise suspicion. Considering the nature of Dispater, I would hesitate to do or say anything that confirms his suspicions."

Silenna

Silenna doesn't bother morphing back for a while - but then seems to realize that giving away her power before Bel might not be the best idea, so by the time they walk into his throne room, she's on two feet again. She pays Marcus' gushing little mind, save for a gracious nod. Once they're back in the infernal wilderness, however, it's not long before she slips back into the comfort of her serpentine form, looking positively sated as they travel through the gate. The battle had been quick and decisive - just the way she'd liked it. Dis, however, would be a different challenge. She couldn't fight her way through. Stealth would have to be the choice here.

Iada Kilcis -- Character Sheet PDF

As the last of the demons fall, Iada dispels the chains holding her and them, then begins to clean off her blade. She comments a bit dismissively to Marcus "let's not break our arms patting ourselves on the back over a few petty demons." Casting an appraising eye at him, she rebuts herself a bit "though, I see my skepticism over your presence was undeserved. Your combat prescience was... impressive. And good work not breaking a hip or anything." As they continue towards Dis, Iada does her best to pretend Silenna isn't there, jumping once as she catches an unexpected movement out of the corner of her eye.

---

Iada looks upon the city, idly considering how she would go about laying siege to such a place as she listens to the others speak. "It sounds like Lilis' spy network may not end at the edge of Dis; she and Dispater may already know we're here." Iada looks up to the roof of the enormous cavern. She muses "I mean, maybe we don't need to talk to Dispater at all. It's a city, it's not like the motley collection of imps that made up the denizens of Avernus; there are probably other movers and shakers." Tapping her horn, she continues "it's not like a snake-lady with a couple half-devils and their companions won't have a chance at blending in, as long as Merritt keeps his halo in his pants. Besides, if Dispater is as careful as you suggest, maybe we can get out of here before he makes a move to stop us."

Saint Gladys - PDF - Reference

Meeting with Bel is another reminder of the unpleasantness of the plane, far beyond the simple tangible evils. A necessary evil... the greatest passions could not bloom without some human ugliness. Perhaps the universe itself worked the same way. Gladys smiles serenely at her new friend, the massive pit lord. "May you meet new triumphs and glory in your noble work." All strictly true sentiments! A friendship should be met with jubilation but this was... that is... the sheer intimidation of it all...

Their true task is too important. She follows the others, maintaining her somber vigil as they trek further into Hell.

---

When Marcus serenades their group on the March to Dis, it's just the ray of light she had hoped for! Gladys blushes deeply before gifting him with a close kiss, as much for herself as for him. "Thank you, Marcus!"

Discussion of the task ahead interrupts any further pleasantries, though Gladys does find time to admire Silenna's beastial form. Maybe a bit openly, staring with wonder at something that isn't made of terrible iron. She catches herself and looks to the others, stammering a little as the enormity of the task takes precedence. "I-I think, that is.." She brushed the front of her gown down, making sure to withdraw her halo. "If Dispater is a match to his reputation, we should consider ourselves already exposed. Perhaps we should locate one of his agents and attempt to barter, or determine if the more intimate residents of this city share a desire to sneak out of it. We must not rest on our laurels."

Arka - PDF

Unlimbering her bow, Arka surveys her spent arrows for recovery while her allies commit to their own post-battle rituals. Answering Marcus, "Thank you, Sage. I will try to live up to the stories," she blushes slightly, a faint coloring of pale cheeks, making her feel like a young, elven farm girl eons dead. Shaking away the praise like an owl cleaning its feathers after a rainstorm, she follows her allies forward into the unknown.

---

"Perhaps we are already known, but maybe we can still go unseen and avoid his servants until we are closer to a way down," Arka says, surveying the city from afar, "We can avoid the common thoroughfares and keep to the back routes. We can bribe or cajole our way into information from there."

Dungeoneering: 1d20+23 39 - as a stand in for Nature in an urban setting, trying to find routes that avoid the majority of Dis's servants until we can find devils more sympathetic to our cause.

[Continuing from #ic]

The rest of you manage to scale the wall via Arka's rope quite easily, and end up landing in a back alley at the edge of the city, with two guard towers at the very edge of your sight range on either side of the wall. As you being moving through the streets, the few imps and other minor devils that are in the alleyway minding their own business scamper away in shock. You think you are in the clear until a thin, black, female devil steps out in front of you and addresses you in a lighthearted, almost friendly tone. "And what brings these mighty heroes down into the depths of hell..?" she says. "Did Torm send you to bring justice? Or did Sune think it was too ugly? There are no epics to be had here, and no trees to grow here to turn to iron. Bane lives on another plane, and I can't think of a single good reason for the Raven Queen to be down here...unless..." she pauses for a second. "...you're planning on going after Asmodeus, aren't you?" she asks in an excited tone, maintaining her peaceful appearance.

The devil calmly replies, "Because all the hells know what he did, and it was only a matter of time before someone came after him. Marcus smiles warmly at the devil, but the smile doesn't quite reach his eyes. "You have us at a disadvantage," he says. "Based on what you said of our individual motives, you seem to know a great deal about us, yet we hardly know anything about you. If you're asking for our aid, might we at least have your name? I would also be interested to know how you heard of us before I even graced this city with my performances, though I understand if a talented agent of such a mighty lord must be guarded about such matters."

We can escort you through here, and we can put a good word in for you with Mephistopheles... both of those offers, however, are contingent upon you agreeing to hinder Baalzebul's chances at succession," she says. "Of course, you have free will and certainly may choose to disagree..." she trails off, the feeling of being surrounded encroaching ever stronger.

Passive Insight 34
Religion 25

quote:

[religion] You can't think of anything you would know about Lillis beyond her being Dispater's head spymaster. You also remember that Dispater is allied with Mephistopheles and the two are constatnly at odds with Baalzebul
[insight] You feel as though the devil will keep her word should you agree to their terms, but notice that she is not guaranteeing anything should you decline her offer

Scaling the wall had been quite a work out and Gladys barely had time to catch her breath before the expected welcoming party appeared. Scrutinizing the fiend doesn't actually yield much recognition... any decent religious scholar recognizes the massive divide between those who write about the glory of heavens and those who might actually know even the names of devils and be struck down by the first party for it. The spymaster's knowledge of their group is troubling, but entirely expected. Feeling the enormity of their task and the thorns of these multiple obstacles, gloom begins to creep into her mind. Recognizing it, Gladys hums her favorite hymn for a few bars before stepping up to Marcus' side. "Even in the depths of Hell a divine hand shapes you in an image of beauty, fiend-blooded sister." The good saint of Tieflings recognizing her own... Gladys has no head for deceit or even threats at the moment, so her cheerfulness is simply sincere! "It is a shame what the necessary actions of this plane lead to, but we are not here to debate philosophy." She tilts her head and peers off to the sides at random a bit before looking Lilis eye to eye.

"It is by far in our best interest to pass through Dis without incident. I am curious why you would provoke us by force of arms... if you truly believe we may stand against the Lord of Hell, it would follow that you accept we could annihilate all of you without losing anything more than the time spent. Please reconsider your attitude and grant us further aid, that we are not delayed at the third, fourth, fifth and sixth before our hammer falls upon Lord Baalzebul."

Arka - PDF

Arka watches the Devil with her hands crossed across her chest. The Raven Queen!? Fool of a devil to call the Lady of Mysteries by such an ancient and terrible name. True, she muses to herself, the cycle is in her purview but it is not the only reason the moon shines. Few words Lilis could add to the conversation could steer Arka back towards impassivity, but for the sake the mission she lets the scowl only touch her eyes.

Trying to observe without being seen to observe, Arka attempts to find the source of the encroaching feeling whenever Lilis is otherwise occupied talking to Marcus, Merritt and Gladys.

"Why thank you," Lillis says, responding to Gladys' compliment with a small curtsey. She then replies to her thinly veiled threats, "You threaten us, and yet time is of the utmost importance to you, is it not? I believe that Asmodeus is not the only one who holds piece of that which you seek, no? And they are only going to get stronger over time... I suppose if you aren't worried about time, you can most certainly try to fight through an entire city alerted to your presence commanded by the Iron Duke himself atop his Citadel, with eyes and ears everywhere. But if you are in truly as much of a need for time as it would appear, you may want to consider my offer..."

From the IC channel:
Though he gapes at Gladys's bluntness for a moment, Marcus recovers quickly and offers a placating laugh. Much of the laugh is genuine though, at the idea of his saintly tiefling friend dishing out barely veiled threats. "Sweet Gladys, surely we can forgive a spy bringing along a few hidden bodyguards for a diplomatic meeting?" he says through his plastered smile. "I'd have done the same."

After Lilis's response:
"For what it's worth, I think we should accept the offer. Hindering one devil so another rises probably won't change the balance of things, at least from the point of view of those of us from the material plane. It may be distasteful, but if it avoids a pitched battle against a whole city and lets us reach our goal faster, then it's worth considering." He pauses, stroking his chin. "Lilis, if I may- did you have anything particular in mind for how we would stymie Baalzebul, or are you proposing that we play it by ear?"

Iada's hand very deliberately brushes the hilt of her sword. "You should know, Lillis, that we took a vote when we got here as to whether we try to negotiate our way through the Nine Hells, or just kill every devil that gets in our way. Negotiate won, but it was close. And it sounds like on of the 'negotiate' votes may be waffling...?" she looks curiously in Gladys' direction. "We can help you, but we'll not hand Dispater the keys to the hells on a silver platter, so remember that when making your request. And you'd best keep in mind that several of us have little patience for your machinations, and a nigh-endless amount of patience for extracting a price for betrayal." As she finishes, Iada nods grimly in Arka's direction, then takes a step closer to and behind Marcus, both to let him take point, and in case things should turn violent.

"I'm glad we could come to an agreement. Yes, we shall escort you to the other end of the city." With that, you see a group of tall, thin, black colored devils appear seemingly out of thin air. The keep you surrounded as you move through the surprisingly quiet city, Dispater's Iron Citadel looming over you the entire time. Looking through the windows as you pass by, you can see devils going about regular daily business: eating, relaxing, sleeping, and so on. Soon enough you are at the far wall, and Lillis signals to the devils guarding the gate to open it. "You would do well to remember your end of the deal, lest it come back to you in the future," she says with a soft smile. With that, she allows you to pass through into a straight, gradually descending cavern.

After following the long cavern down, you arrive in the third layer of hell, Minauros. An oily, black rain drizzle constantly from the ceiling as you move through the marshes around the mud volcanos. In the distance, you can see the great mausoleum that houses Mammon, the serpentine archduke.

A stern smile is the most good cheer Gladys can muster during escort. She regards Lilis as though an elder were giving a hooligan a long-suffering smile. "Yes, we shall honor this deal. Thank you for your guidance." There was an awful lot of scripture about the perceived necessity of a stable Hell... at least they had left two layers in terrible, yet muted hands.

Finding the walk a bit unpleasant and their new circumstances more so, Gladys beckons her halo to full magnificence to combat the rain. "A cynical man would expect each Lord of Hell to sit atop the only passage through his realm, that none might "miss" him. Let us seek high hopes and scout the land, that we may hasten our journey." Gladys feels that they have at least two better suited to the task(Nature!), but tentatively offers to bless them with the Water Walking Ritual if any of them desire it.

Iada's well-worn boots glide her effortlessly across the muddy ground. As Gladys' aura drives back the worst of the rain, she begins to inhale deeply--briefly forgetting who she's travelling with--then feigns a cough in order to hide her comfort, here. As suffused with evil as the place may be, she'd always loved the smell of sulfur, and the dampness of the Autumns and Springs of Waterdeep. Though she hated herself a bit for it, she saw this level as a break from the worst of Hell, though made a point of not sighing too obviously, and grumbling a bit about the rain.

"Hopefully, we can find a way to skip the next level; Stygia sounded especially unappealing." Iada brushes a splash of mud off of her tunic before giving it up as futile. "We do plan to follow through on our promise to Lillis, correct?"
