Edit: according to Wikipedia, an '85 shouldn't have the little windows in the doors. I wonder if the previous owner swapped doors with an earlier model just because they looked cool?

Only peripherally related, but I'm trying to utilize PartsFan to see what I can find for my USDM AE86. I can see parts and such, but I'm not seeing how to buy. It's possible the stuff I'm looking at is NLA. IS it supposed to fill in the frame below the parts info with purchase options?

Didn't even give me a chance to see their prices or anything. At the same time as K.S. I contacted https://www.japanese4x4spares.co.uk and a guy by the name of Rob responded back, very friendly and gave me a rundown of prices and the cost to ship them. Milner was cool and nice and all but not very much help if they can't ship to the USA.

How would it not be worth it if the parts flat out aren't available in the US?
Well, if they don't want your money...

I never use PartsFan to actually buy, I find the part number then punch it in to amayama. They are consistently the cheapest for prices, shipping is normal cost and everything I've ordered has come from Japan. I guess PartsFan is supposed to find parts but ???
I've never had luck.

Ah, OK, I was obviously wondering. For my Corolla, I've been using https://7zap.com/en/ and https://www.megazip.net for parts lookup (they've got greeat interactive versions of the OEM parts books, for Toyota, at least), then actually looking on https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com for prices from an American supplier. You can also buy parts on Megazip from UAE and Japan that are sometimes not available in the US.

For you guys, 7Zip seems to only have Toyota/Lexus, Honda, and Nissan/Infiniti for Japanese brands. Megazip does Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Honda, Subaru, and Mitsubishi.

This is indeed true.
Part of the reason the Cutlass is still in the street is I need to figure out an arrangement that doesn't block the side of the garage that was vacated by the sold RX-7. I want to continue to use that for vehicle service.

Had my two Land Cruisers and the Lite Ace delivered late last night, Cruisers arrived with dead batteries. Charged them overnight, this morning and afternoon, it's three batteries since the not-Prado is a 24 volt dual battery system. They both start and run perfectly now though. Prado feels like it had been sitting a while but she starts right up and is eager to drive, it's a lot peppier than I was expecting. The not-Prado with it's 3.4L 5 cyl PZ non-turbo diesel feels slower, like it could uproot some trees and move a house at a leisurely pace. Prado feels like a taut nimble little thing, quicker than my Rugger and way quicker than the not-Prado Cruiser. Since they are identical otherwise it's neat to compare them to each other.

Just call me Mr. White SUV.

We only cleaned up and messed with the Lite Ace today, we'll get to the Cruisers later. These pictures are as it came to us, we didn't pick up or clean anything. It was filthy, like they always are!

This thing owns and owns hard. It reminds me of our Acty van, just larger and with a hell of a lot more cool features. 5 speed manual, 3Y-U 4 cyl gasoline engine 4x4. Skylite roof, ice maker, dual air conditioners, rear heater, bad-rear end center swivel seat. The rear seats can fold up against the side walls but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. My wife has fallen in love with it and she demands we keep it. :shepspends:

It might suck royally in some way that we won't know until we start driving it daily but assuming nothing comes up this probably means now that we're going to sell the Crown (sorry Rhyno). Wife simply doesn't care too much about the Crown compared to the Lite Ace because the Lite Ace is quirky in all the right ways while also flatly being more practical for her needs. This also might mean I'll be selling the Rugger since that Hilux is a powerful truck to try to not keep. We'll see once it gets here but dang, I can't keep them all.

We're going to spend the weekend loving with both Cruisers but neither of them are going to be as interesting as the Lite Ace.

Ooooooooooh, do those Skyroof windows pop up?

It's gonna be a long 2.5 months until its installed but until then I have the best soundtrack on the road: The RB26DETT by Nissan.

You're getting hosed on that audio/security system quote. Get a second opinion from somewhere else. Also, probably don't do it all in one big quote. Like stereo on one, and keyless alarm on another.
Go price a deck and speakers on Crutchfield, then see what something similar is installed locally. A decent head unit can be had for as low as $150 (The Pioneer mechless in my Crown Vic was right at that). Speakers depend on coax or separates, etc., but again, decent stuff starts at like $50 a pair. A DIN head unit, and direct fit speakers shouldn't cost much to install.
Alarms - I've been out of that game too long. I buy them myself, and do the install myself. I've not paid more that $60 or so for an alarm. I prefer Omega products (K9, among other brands) for bang/buck and have had no trouble out of them.
You may be getting hit with a premium because it's something unfamiliar, but really, it's just a Nissan as far as the stereo goes, as far as I can tell. 6.5" speakers all around, DIN radio. Probably uses a standard '90s Nissan adapter harness.

Ah, you're getting a full-bore system with all the toys. That's different. I was just thinking deck-and-four-speakers.
Probably not so outrageous, then. Labor is a killer. I don't really have a feel for what all that should cost, since I literally have always installed my own stuff, and didn't really pay attention to what the shop I worked at charged (we were not a high-end shop at all.)
Just a cursory glance at prices shows that they're not far out on that. Good Alpine stuff, and the Pioneer deck.

slothrop posted:

I'm no expert but that does seem expensive. 4.5 hours to install a head unit also seems a bit over the top. As a complete novice I did my car in under 2 hours, now that I know what I'm doing I'd say 30 mins, tops. That doesn't include a back up cam though.

Now it's your car and your budget so you do whatever makes you happy, I tend to think extra amps and subwoofers is a bit of overkill. I'm no audiophile but I do love my music and drive a fair bit. Updating the head unit and speakers in my car was enough to make it sound great and cost me ~$300 dollarydoos. I got USB/BT etc out of it and that's really all I need. We did throw in a bit of dynamat in the doors because my buddy had it lying around.

Back-up camera adds a surprising amount of complexity, though they can combine some of that with the amp install, since they'll have interior bits up for running cables already.
I like the extra headroom offered by an outboard amp, and a sub, even a small one, is a welcome addition. 6.5" speakers can do pretty well, but there's no substitute for an actual bass driver, even if you don't boom.
I think it sounds like a solid system that will entertain for a long time, given the quality components.

So I will only be able to sell in Washington (however my city is in the metropolitan area of Portland, so naturally all the interest is from Oregon buyers). Now I have to go get an attorney to get the Oregon DMV to realize that they cannot make up and interpret law.

I would say do a ton of research ahead of time, call your DMV see if they are somewhat familiar with these vehicles. Ask them what the process is, if they have registered a foreign car before, etc. Domestic buyers that I have encountered are afraid of a car with no state registration so you will likely have to do it, don't run into the same problem I have of a poo poo head state over stepping itself.

I'd also like to point out that any study from the UK regarding LHD vs RHD vehicle incidents needs to take into account that most likely most of the incidents are the people from LHD countries driving on unfamiliar RHD roads, not necessarily the fact that the car is LHD.
