Who needs on-field skills when you can dance like this?

Fun Shoe
Believe it or not, Eliminator is back for its 14th season! Your new clown-car of an administration team has fired up the pre-season and we’re cookin’ with gas over here. We’ll be doing some work during the pre-season while we have actual data coming in, so things may be a a little spotty here and there as we futz about, but we’re hoping to have our fiddling complete by the regular season so we can all enjoy the thrill/agony of inevitable defeat.

We have not sent out the welcome back emails yet, we’re just announcing the pre-season on the forums here so you die-hards can get in there early and help us out by acting like you normally would, making bets and the like, and we can make sure it’s all going well. The traditional welcome emails will go out before the start of the regular season. If you find any issues or have any comments, let us know on our issue tracker: https://github.com/SASEliminator/Eliminator/issues

We want to give a glorious shout-out here to our forebear, Rura Penthe, the father of SAS Eliminator, blessed are his picks. Hopefully we don’t embarrass ourselves in his wake.

And now, some housekeeping:

What is eliminator?
A free game running on the intarwebs that lets you obsess about NFL football in exciting ways! Running out of SAS/TFF since 2004, it contains survival mode and pick'em with reverse and spread variants, as well as a fake money betting mode called funbuck that allows spread, moneyline, over/under, and parlay betting like a real sports book except you don’t get any actual money at the end.

Important Links:

Log in or Register

Pick your teams!

Games
-Eliminator
-Reverse Eliminator
-Spread Eliminator (pick against the spread)
-Reverse Spread Eliminator (because why not)
-Pickem
-Reverse Pickem
-Spread Pickem (pick against the spread)
-Reverse Spread Pickem (also because why not)

Also there are groups! Maybe you don’t want to lose to randos from the internet, but you think you can show up people you actually know! Good news, you can do exactly that. Group owners can set their groups to be public/private, control the game types that are allowed, and email invitations to users.

There are leaderboards for every game type and every group, so there have never been more chances to show how bad you are at picking NFL games!

2016 Recap

A single glorious champion emerged from the public eliminator with a perfect season. Turn your ire upon ditch who secured his victory in week 16 as numerous streaks were broken. I hope whatever you promised the devil was worth it.

With a one-game margin, spankweasel rose to the top of the public pickem with an excellent 171-85 record. There were several players hot on those heels, a single second place finish and a tie for third.

Funbucks gambling master b0ng must’ve been hittin’ the good stuff as he bested the next closest competitor by ~$3k in the regular season. The overall shining victor, though, was ashen in the post season who racked up a staggering $75k with a masterstroke series of parlay bets culminating in just shy of $60k won on the Super Bowl alone. Good on you, gambler.

Worst Bloodbaths Ever!
2004 Week 9
First year of eliminator and very few bets, but the Giants and Chiefs went down and when the smoke cleared only 25% of players were still standing.

2005 Week 1
The game that made me swear off Rams bets forever. 4 complete seasons since and not once have I bet on that cursed team.

2006 Week 7
Cards and Jags combined to break the hearts of well over 100 people. 29.76% remained.

2007 Week 10
Damned Saints! This was the year the Saints had suddenly become good. Unfortunately the ghost of Archie Manning put a hex on the team and they went down, taking 76 brave souls with them. (The hex was made more powerful by Archie not being dead.) 27.86% survived.

2010 Week 16
The latest mass elimination in the history of the game. 6 of the top 8 teams (ordered by # of bets) went down in flames and only 20.9% survived.

2013 Week 10
Jaguars beat Titans. Whoops. 15.49% made it through.

Nice! I was just thinking about this earlier today, and it's great to hear it'll be back for another season.

Bet on bad teams and ones with new coaches in the preseason though. They're going to play better backups for longer and be trying to instill a winning culture.

Jaguars are my preseason week 1 eliminator pick for this reason.

I assumed some people had gotten funbucks wagers in from the thread comments, anyone else having issues? It's our temporada primera, we probably missed something.

I'm looking in the logs and I feel like I see funbucks bets going in, but maybe I don't know what I'm looking for. I don't play funbucks normally because I don't understand how sports betting works at all, but I guess I'll join it and type numbers in boxes until something happens.

Bad, very bad!

Someone in the NCAA thread was thinking about setting up a site for some college football stuff (like for just pools I think) and I suggested he get in touch with you guys to see if you might collaborate, did that ever happen? I think he said the registration was down at the time, this was a couple of weeks ago.

After I turned it on in my profile I was able to make a (terrible) funbux bet.

Wow, I forgot everything in the last 6 months. In Eliminator are you picking a winner or a loser?

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

You pick a winner for Eliminator and a loser for Reverse Eliminator. You can only pick a given team once all season for a given game (although I presume our preseason picks don't count for that).

I haven't heard anything. Maybe one of the other guys got pinged. I will say registration hasn't been down, as far as I know. Can't say I've ever tried to register during an off-season though, so I don't know exactly what it does.

Personally, I'm not even a little interested in working on a version of Eliminator to deal with the NCAA's one trillion games per week. I mean, clearly I barely even understand how it works for the NFL, so I doubt I could do it anyway. My development/debugging strategy right now is to picture an actual ruby in my mind while I repeat the litany against fear and stare blankly at logs looking for any words I recognize. So far so good, amirite?

I don't want to be "that guy" but...are you sure it worked? I don't see any bets in the database.

Currently I'm seeing the same validation error mentioned earlier when I try, currently trying to figure out what's failing to validate.

Yeah I don't know if it's even feasible at all, but my idea was if he was going to do all the work anyway maybe it would be possible to tie in to some of the eliminator site back end stuff. And I'm probably one of the few people excited about the idea since I've selfishly wanted NCAA stuff on eliminator since the beginning. So feel free to ignore unless whoever that poster was is really serious about the idea and gets in touch with you, since I have no clue about how any of this stuff works.

You're right, I saw no error message but I'm looking now and it says I haven't made any bets. It just disappeared or something.

They would have to make up a spread so you can fake gambol on a preseason game.

If there's no spread available, then there's no spread available. It's not a bug, it's just the state of the sportsbook. We're still shamelessly scraping Pinnacle's pages so whatever they have is what we use. No spread from them, no spread for you.

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

so there's no alternative source of spreads? It's weird how they'll have a spread for a game but not for another game that is on the same day/at the same time. Maybe Pinnacle just suck?

I understand there's no way to set payouts etc. without a spread.

frankly any sportsbook setting a line on a preaseason game is :psyduck:

Getting even pinnacle working was a challenge, they stopped the free XML feed (as have all the other sportsbooks) so we're doing scraping.

I'm not a big gambler but I think Pinnacle is probably fine? There are several reasons a book might not have a line on a game, they're in the business of making money after all and if they don't think they have a good enough read on what they think will happen they'll just stay away.

For instance in the regular season you might see this pop up when it's not clear if a starting QB will play. In the preseason there's just so much crap, in most cases you're betting on how a bunch of guys who will be out of a job in a couple of weeks will play.
