Thanks to their outstanding numbers this past season, NBC has given SNL three prime time specials this month. Airing Thursdays of August 10th, 17th, and 24th, Weekend Update: Summer Edition will showcase Colin Jost and Michael Che's acerbic takes on the news of the Summer, as well as a few visits from your favourite Update correspondents.

While Weekend Update specials are no stranger to prime time - there were similarly brief 2- and 3-episode runs in 2008, 2009, and 2012, as well as a one-off in 2003 to go up against that year's Super Bowl halftime show - this will be the first time SNL has aired any new, live material in the month of August (the first, and last, Summer episodes were in late July 1976; after the show won 4 Emmys, it came back for two bonus shows.) So instead of having to quickly recap most the stuff they missed over the Summer on the season premiere in late September, they can quickly recap all of the stuff they missed over the first part of Summer in mid-August!

It seemed up-in-the-air if there would be three or four shows in this run. Initially there was a fourth show booked for August 31, but then Michael Che was on Fallon last week, and Fallon said there would be three shows. Then Jost and Che were interviewed on Sunday Today by Dylan Dreyer, who said there would be four shows. But then Jost and Che were on Seth Meyers last night, where they once again were said to be doing three shows, a fact which the current NBC schedule reflects. Perhaps NBC is wary on committing to a fourth until the numbers come in for the first couple.

As for possible guest stars? Well, Fallon said he'd be up for it. Anything beyond that is, as always with SNL, not known until the show's airing live.

As long as we're here, have the schedule for upcoming repeat episodes. Most of these are being rerun for their second times:

August
12th: Louis C.K. / The Chainsmokers
19th: Jimmy Fallon / Harry Styles
26th: Aziz Ansari / Big Sean

September
2nd: Dwayne Johnson / Katy Perry (1st encore presentation)
9th: Kristen Stewart / Alessia Cara
16th: Tom Hanks / Lady Gaga (3rd encore!)
23rd: Dave Chappelle / A Tribe Called Quest

The season 43 premiere will be on either September 30th or October 7th.

Enjoy!

HuffPo and AV Club both saying 4 episodes. Still inclined to believe people actually working for Lorne.

I'm fairly sure nobody who watches actually saw this thread, but SNL news has to go somewhere.

TONIGHT there is an SNL Vintage at 10/9 CDT, Josh Brolin with Adele. Regular timeslot is the second encore airing of Dave Chappelle episode, for which he won an Emmy

The show won nine Emmys last week, including Outstanding Variety Show!

The season premiere is next week, September 30th. Here is the lineup for the first three episodes:

AND- -

Remember how they did the last four shows last year live in all time zones? Well, they're doing it again this year: SNL will be LIVE, Coast to Coast - all season long.

With Vanessa, Bobby, and Sasheer gone, I'm stunned they haven't made any new cast announcements. I was also expecting Melissa to be fired, but haven't heard anything about that, one way or another.
