In a world literally no automotive passenger safety standards or regulations it was obviously necessary. It's difficult imagine stuff like reverse lights, seat belts, and passenger side door mirrors being optional with a near-zero take rate (especially on cheaper cars like the Corvair). On the other hand, Unsafe at Any Speed was definitely a hit piece that cherry-picked evidence in its favor while ignoring the rest. The Corvair wasn't appreciably more deadly than any other car of the era assuming the driver could drive and knew what oversteer was. The only reason to pick it over any other car at the time was because it was highly visible and GM had the most money to go after. The book was sensationalist and factually shaky to promote his career, GM just guessed wrongly when they supposed that he wasn't in it for altruistic reasons which, in retrospect, seems to have been the case. Also LOL didn't Bernie say he "didn't want to be the next Nader" as his reason for backstabbing the left?
