Azhais posted:https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/the-orville-seth-macfarlane.html I've got a theory on this. MacFarlane seems like the kind who really, really enjoys supporting talent, and uses his own to spearhead projects that let him bring in talented people he likes. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to set up a Trek-like, be the captain for a little while, get to act alongside some of his favorite people on a goofy spaceship, then go out in a heroic death so other people could take up the reins.

I think Captain Mercer is the heart of the show and that Seth wrote the perfect character for both the show and himself and I would be sad to see him leave it

So don't kill him off, just promote him to something else. Mercer is now special ambassador to the Krill, and he shows up once a season in a cameo or because he needs a special job done. Kelly gets promoted to Captain, Bortus moves up to XO. Bring in somebody new as whatever it is Bortus does currently, and off we go.

Isn't this one of those sites that constantly reports the new Star Trek shows are getting cancelled all the time despite being pork projects for hollywood failsons/daughters?

Yeah, this is "news" like that one site who was reporting that Pedro Pascal walked off the Mandalorian and no one could confirm it and then (surprise) it turns out that didn't happen, he had a small disagreement with production management in the typical way that almost every lead actor in a TV show does after about two or three seasons.

Killing his character would be fine, but handing over the keys kills the show within a year. Hypothetically.

Disagree, S1 was weaker than S2 in large part because Fox assumed "it's Seth so it'll be family guy in space," Hulu would absolutely give the show room to breathe even without him.

That website is definitely reading stuff into an interview. It tries to say that him talking about wanting to finish out the season means he wants to quit while ignoring the stated reason why the show is being delayed which is that it is hard to do a makeup heavy show while protecting everyone involved in production.

Makes sense, from a Suit's perspective, to not want to disrupt the business model.
