So I know it's not supposed to be a completely 100% jokes all the time show but at the moment I feel like I'll like the pilot of Orville but any enjoyment I get out of the rest of the series (or, lets be real here because FOX, season) will be based entirely on how often the comedy relies on all those sci-fi cliche jokes we all know are used or how they are used. Comparisons to Galaxy Quest abound already but we already have the perfect example of how you can poke fun at a fanbase without being a jerk about it so you kind of already have to do at least that.

I hope (and expect) that both this show and Discovery will have at least one "this is why being a fascist or an apologist for fascism is bad and wrong" episode because evidently not enough fuckwit nerds got the message from all the other shows

Even assuming Orville is good I'm operating under the assumption it's going to last a single season anyways.

First episode was basically what I was expecting, generally acceptable with a few too many bad dick/butt/fluid/etc jokes. Now to see if they can maintain even that level of quality.

It's still a show that's going to last only a single season though.

Yeah, simply not having transporters led to the program's best action sequence, which was really fun. Love "threading the needle" type starship maneuvers.

Actually my dumb nerd brain is already going "The evil ship clearly only had guns on the front so they really should have just stayed behind them instead of continually circling." Like a goofy version of that scene in Pitch Black where Riddick stays in the monster's blind spot.

Am I the only one wondering if they're just going to leave the possibly thousands+ of prisoners in the zoo without a second thought or am I just not used to (mostly) non-serialization any more? TNG certainly left some episodes unintentionally hanging on some potentially troublesome notes. Maybe there'll be a throwaway line in another episode.

It's probably not going away but I'm skipping my way through anything that resembles the marriage drama in the zoo that was in this episode. The shuttle part was watchable but fuuuck anything that goes beyond that.

Didn't the zookeeper agree to trade the entire zoo for the reality TV for some reason? I figured that was why the child was free, to show it wasn't just the humans.

You could see spikey guy in the background when everyone was around the screen. Not a huge deal considering the tone of the show though.

It's a good thing that no episodes thus far have neared that, huh?

I read it as a kind of like Troi and Riker's thing, where it they used it in TNG to establish a past between them, (similar in some ways to Crusher and Picard, too) to give you a bunch of backstory at once that your mind could fill in the blanks with.

They didn't harp on Troi and Riker being exes or Picard feeling guilty for or Crusher resenting Picard getting Jack killed, after all.

I'm obviously exaggerating. But there were two very substantial scenes in the second episode devoted entirely to the topic and the pilot could barely go a scene without one of them making a snippy comment.

In this latest episode there was 1 joke that I noticed.

Like I said, they weren't really jokes. Just wow, how kooky is it that these two male klingon dudes are arguing about their child and how sensitive they are to each other.

Or maybe I'm giving the show too much credit that it thought it was funny. Maybe they just wanted to talk about trans people for an hour in a really ham-fisted way, with no humor at all? Bold move.

They didn't play up the scenes between the two as comedy at all.

I suppose since "people who don't know they're in space" is a well worn trope so they didn't need to do too much with it but a lot of stuff felt like it rushed to its conclusion in that episode. There's only so much you can do in a TV hour of course but basically no one needed to be convinced of anything, they either already accepted everything or just needed the right button to be pressed. It's a better concept for an episode than "alien zoo," and much like episode 3 a distinct lack of entire scenes dedicated to divorce jokes helped, but we still went pretty quickly from an angry mob beating someone to death to "Oh hey, I guess that guy we killed like an hour ago was right."

First of all there had better be a literal jar of pickles on this show at some point. The line continues to be a dumb if inoffensive joke but if they don't make it payoff somewhere that will be make it just a bad joke.

Second if all it takes to get a leg back is a few hours in a ship-based hospital I would totally cut a leg off for a joke.

In the last few episodes of Discovery the Klingons actually used English in a few scenes and they actually were talking and expressing just fine. It seems to be something to do with how the actors are talking in Klingon or how they’re directed to talk in it.

Bringing in some established and recognizable actors to play a character similar to one they previously did in Star Trek isn't really the same as parody.

They shouldn't play the exact same character of course. Maybe make Combs the creepily charming military dictator and Alaimo the slimy and overconfident diplomat :v:
