That's it! No more hiding in tomato crates! It's time to show that idiota Germany how a real nation fights!

For pasta~! CHARGE!

Would it be possible to put katana mastery or something on a grimoire to allow katana access?
I'm assuming doing so would require a Ronin/katana user in the party already to generate such a skill so it isn't a solution.

You don't have to. You get provided a Ronin Grimoire from a secret area chest so you can equip a katana that way. However, the equipment bonus part doesn't really get abused on DPS classes as using a katana on a Highlander would lock him out of his spear skills. And same goes for all the other classes and their weapon skills. So unfortunately they're only really good on support classes who don't usually get placed under those equipment restrictions and can reap the benefits of equipment bonuses more easily.

Of course if you fused that Ronin Grimoire away, yeah you're poo poo out of luck unless you get lucky with Streetpasses and uh, good luck triggering those nowadays!

Weapon ATK is a considerably part of the damage formula, but STR has much bigger weight. So it'll be a boost, but the other reason I didn't really make use of it was that locking Dude out of Highlander skills wasn't too appealing as Land Slash spam would destroy his TP pool instantly.

Though for those curious, with Dude's current stats (44 STR), here's how much damage he'd deal with an unboosted Land Slash against Alraune who has 52 VIT.

With the Pylon Spear which has 151 ATK, it deals a total of 648.622585 damage.
With the Wyvern Spear which has 218 ATK, it deals a total of 957.133282 damage.
With the Ameno Habikiriwhich has 255 ATK, it deals a total of 1129.57137 damage.

A very considerable boost all things considered. Just that being locked out of Highlander skills and insta wiping my TP pool was not an attractive prospect for me at the time. :v:

I see. That's unfortunate.

I actually kinda like the idea that you can use the bragging rights reward "early" but then they hosed it by forcing you to only get it with the story party.

Next up on cut content, the Forest Folk. Strap yourselves in, cause this is a big one!

This first bit takes place during the 3rd Stratum mission to discover what these Forest Folk are. Following the first meeting with Kupala, there were in-between encounters cut out where you would encounter more of the Forest Folk.

unnatural indentations in the ground.
They are footprints... and they appear
to be human, like yours.
These footprints may be a clue to
finding the strange creature that the
Radha asked you to investigate.
Perhaps the owner of these footprints
is nearby... You wonder if it would
avail you anything to search for them.

In the course of your search, you find
unnatural indentations in the ground.
They are footprints... and they appear
to be human, like yours.
[Character?:0x0000], upon seeing them, begins to
carefully observe the footprints.
When [Character?:0x0000] stands again, you are
told that the footprints were made by
an unshod party, most likely barefoot.
It could be that the footprints are not
even human, but belong to one of the
creatures you are here to investigate.
The footprints lead east... You are free
to follow them, if you like.
[End]

-- ID 60 --
You find a similar set of footprints as
those you saw before.
When you listen carefully, you can hear
something from the direction where the
prints lead...
Could it be the creature you were asked
to investigate? You decide to conceal
yourselves and observe further.
[End]

-- ID 61 --
The strange creature that arrives on the
scene seems to be looking carefully at
the forest trees and doesn't notice you.
When it comes to a withered branch,
the strange creature silently reaches
for it...
Before your eyes, the withered branch
regains its strength and grows thick
with leaves!
The strange creature nods, satisfied with
this development, and then departs.
You rub your eyes, unsure that they have
not deceived you...
It seems these creatures have the ability
to affect plants in some way...
You note this fact down for later as you
continue on your journey.
[End]

-- ID 62 --

which seem to be the same as those you
discovered before...
However, this set is fresh, suggesting
its owner is nearby. You listen carefully
and hear something up ahead...

to investigate? You decide to conceal
yourselves and observe further.

withdraw hastily into the forest.
Could they have been gathered here for
some purpose...?
As you look around, the light streaming
in from the trees fades.
It seems to have been a momentary spot
of sunlight penetrating here in the
depths by some unfathomable coincidence.
Perhaps it was this light which drew
the strange creatures to gather here...
Could their race yearn after light?
You file the possibility away for later

about on the ground.
They may belong to the strange creatures

But although you look around, you can
find no one here who may have left the
prints. Are they not active at night...?
You make a point to remember these
footsteps as you go on your way.
[End]

-- ID 80 --
As you exit one of the forest passages,
you reach a hall-like space.
From within the hall, you hear the growl
of a dreadful beast... Its sights are
locked onto a skinny youth.
The youth seems to be another of those
strange humanoid creatures like the girl
you encountered earlier.
You can draw your weapons to come to his
aid, or simply watch the scene play out.

the raging beast. It sounded like words,
though in no tongue you could mimic.
The strange creature casts a glance at
you before disappearing into the forest,
along with the monster.
Could these strange creatures have the
means to subdue the forest's fauna?
You keep the possibility in mind as you
continue on your journey.

mysterious creature's footprints?"
You admit that it does seem likely...
You look closer and ascertain that the
footprints are headed east.
You are free to search for the owner of
these footprints or simply ignore them.
[End]

-- ID 220 --
You find more indentations in the ground
that look very similar to the footprints
you came across earlier.
These look fresher than the previous
set, suggesting that their owner may
yet be close by.
You cautiously search for anyone present
nearby when Raquna interrupts in hushed
tones.
[End]

-- ID 221 --

frail branches...

doing here to begin with, though?"
There may be some sort of clue here to
the mysterious creatures's nature...
You look around with high hopes, but the
search is in vain.
However, Raquna happens to look up at
the sky and comes to a realization.
[End]

-- ID 246 --
[F813] ・ “Huh... Maybe they came here to soak
up some sun.
“Given how deep in the forest we are,
it would make sense if they prized spots
where sunlight still comes through."

place to memory before returning to your

Now the Annihilate the Forest Folk mission is where things get more interesting. In EO1 and the final version of Classic Mode in EOU, you were locked into doing this mission, and the only way to not commit genocide was to turn off the game and never play it again.

That was not always the case for EOU's version of Classic mode. In fact, the mission text highly suggested that at some point you were able to go off the rails and not do the mission. The first point of interest here is Quinn's mission dialogue:

quote:

-- ID 0 --
[F813] ・ ...I've heard from the Chieftain. You've
agreed to accept the mission, correct?
To venture onto the 16th floor, home to
the forest folk, and slaughter them...
[F813] In all honesty, it troubles me. After
hearing your report, I believe it better
to send ambassadors, not exterminators.
To begin with, I wasn't informed that
we'd made progress on our analysis of
the stone tablet.
It's not that I doubt the Chieftain,
but...
[F813] ・ ......
I think it is important to know why the
forest folk harbor such enmity toward us
before we can come to an understanding.
If you gain any insight into that,
I hope that you'll return here rather
than prioritizing your mission.
Please, give me the unvarnished truth.
If you need to hold back details to avoid
repercussions, feel free, of course.
It does prick at my conscience that I'm
asking you to put my personal request
above the Radha's...
[F813] 。 But I beg you, [Guild Name], to bring
back the truth.
[End]

I'm not sure how this was intended to be triggered, but he had a different introduction that's similar to the one in story (but this isn't Story's version, as Story has its own section it pulls from.) The original mission text you see in the final game is right next to this one, so it seems like while they never intended to cut you being able to wipe out the forest folk entirely, they were able to let you go off the rails somehow.

After you encountered Kupala on B17F, you had to report back to the Radha. Quinn had some different things he could say on this supposed route.

quote:

-- ID 71 --
What...? You met a girl of the forest
folk?
......
I see. Thank you for informing me of
this. It seems... I have some thinking
to do.
Lord Visil should hear this report
as well. Do you mind waiting a moment?
[End]

His initial text, which just cuts out a lot of what's said in the version you see. You meet with Visil afterwards, but there are no differences there. Now your conversation with Quinn afterwards is where things really get interesting.

quote:

-- ID 74 --
[F813] ...I can see that you've spoken to the
Chieftain.
I actually looked into some records of
our history after I heard your report.
Unfortunately, I could find no account
of this pact made with the forest folk.
What I found instead were traces of some
records being heavily modified...
[F813] ・ The Chieftain is hiding something.
I believe that for a certainty.
Given his unbending view of the forest
folk, I speculate that this matter has
something to do with it.
Alas... conflict between the mankind and
the forest folk is unavoidable now.
The Chieftain is unlikely to change his
stance, and they will not remain idle
long once we raid their sacred ground.
[F813] ......
Perhaps now, conflict is all we are
capable of. But some day...
Do you think it foolish of me to hope
that someday, there will come a time
when we can join hands?
[End]

-- ID 75 --
[Color:0x0005]How will you respond?[Color:0x0000]
“Yes, it is."
“I don't think so."
“I don't know."
[End]

-- ID 76 --
[F813] ・ It would be a selfish hope from the
point of view of the forest folk,
wouldn't it...
[End]

-- ID 77 --
[F813] ・ Thank you. Your words provide some scant
reassurance at these times.
[End]

-- ID 78 --
[F813] ・ True... We can't know what's right or
wrong without further action.
[End]

-- ID 79 --
Members of [Guild Name], won't you take
this with you?
[End]

-- ID 80 --
If possible, I'd like you to deliver
that letter to the forest folk.
...You should know that the Chieftain
has called on the services of two other
adventurers besides you.
[F813] z The Labyrinth can be a dangerous place,
and for more than one reason. Be very
careful as you go.
[End]

Yeah. At some point you could actually plan to negotiate with the forest folk instead of going full extermination mode. Granted I don't know if Quinn would have given you the letter if you answered peace wasn't possible.

Though this doesn't mean you avoid conflict altogether.

quote:

-- ID 111 --
[F813] オ “Trespassers of the Sealed Lands... Thou
knowest of the pact, yet thou remain in
the forest and kill my people.
“Why dost thou harbor such bloodlust?
Does killing each other not sate thy
thirst for violence!?"
You furrow your brow, confused by the
girl's allusion to killing each other...
Despite your confusion, you remember you
have a duty to carry out, and hand the
girl the letter from Radha Hall.
[F813] ソ “...Thou hast trespassed thus far, so
what of it? Words are already meaningless
between us."
The girl crushes the letter and turns on
her heel.
“We shall fight to our last breath, just
as our proud ancestors did.
“We shall never yield! Our mightiest
warriors and our guardian bird shall
resist thee to the end!
[F813] ヤ “Come, and let us end this!"
[End]

As Kupala stomps on your negotiation attempts as you were still killing Forest Folk on the way down to B20F.

Though the aftermath of the Iwaoropenelep fight could potentially go another way.

quote:

-- ID 130 --
“No... the guardian bird our god has
provided is fallen...?
“Our warriors have breathed their last
as well... This, then, is the end..."
The forest girl collapses to the ground.
It seems she spent the last of her
strength summoning the guardian bird.
The girl glares to see you rush to
her side...
[F813] レ “Taint not the struggle we waged with
pride, Man. We shall return to the
forest, as our ancestors did."
[End]

-- ID 131 --
After this last utterance, the forest
girl falls unconscious.
You haven't the heart to leave the
still-breathing girl here and decide
to take her back to town.
You tend to the unconscious girl's
injuries and hoist her on your back.
You drape her surprisingly light body
with a hooded cape before heading back
to Etria.
[End]

quote:

-- ID 150 --
The forest girl remains unconscious,
as if in a deep sleep, on your back.
...If the people of the town were to see
her inhuman appearance, it could cause
unnecessary panic.
You should hurry to Radha Hall.
[End]

As your guild could rescue Kupala, and then unlock her as a guildmaster in Classic. Sadly this was all unimplemented.

Quinn had 3 different mission accomplished lines depending on how the mission turned out. One of them was for if you opted to stay on the rails and slaughter all the forest folk, which is what you're stuck doing in the final game. However there were 2 unimplemented deviations you could take, but I have no idea what exactly triggered these.

quote:

-- ID 10 --
You surprised me. I never thought that
you'd bring back one of the forest folk.
[F813] ・ Here, a reward for your hard work.
Go on, you deserve it.
[End]

-- ID 11 --
[F813] ・ There are things I must discuss with you,
such as her treatment and her people...
But one matter takes precedence.
You see, the Chieftain... Lord Visil...
has disappeared. A secretary last heard
him muttering about entering the forest.
The Chieftain has never once been absent
in our town's admittedly short history.
The citizenry is on edge.
You are on your way to investigate the
lower Stratum now, yes?
If you happen to find the Chieftain,
please ask him to return on our behalf.
Then again... the timing of his sojourn
into the forest, just after ordering the
forest folk's extermination, bothers me.
He may know something that we don't.
Perhaps the truth of the Labyrinth...
[F813] But no, it won't do to proceed on mere
assumptions.
[F813] 「 [Guild Name], you are almost at the
darkest depths of the forest. Please
bring the truth to light.
[End]

choice to take a different path.
[F813] ・ This isn't much, but I've prepared a
reward in honor of your distinguished
service. Go on, you deserve it.
[End]

-- ID 13 --
[F813] ・ By the by... did you happen to see the
Chieftain in the Labyrinth?
You see, the Chieftain has disappeared.
A secretary last heard him muttering
about heading to the forest depths.
[F813] What could Lord Visil be thinking?
I don't understand him anymore.
The Chieftain has never once been absent
in our town's admittedly short history.
The people are growing anxious.
You are on your way to investigate the
lower Stratum now, yes?
If you happen to find the Chieftain,
please ask him to return on our behalf.
I only hope that he's safe...
[End]

Now what about Story mode? Unfortunately, there's not much of anything on that front. Or rather, most of it got scrubbed out and the text there is used in the final game. However they did miss few a spots. There's an unused conversation in the B16F text file that sheds quite a bit of light on things.

quote:

-- ID 370 --
“The Sandy Barrens, eh? It's as lonely
as it sounds..."
[End]

-- ID 371 --
“This would seem to be sacred ground
for those creatures. We should tread
lightly here."
[End]

-- ID 372 --
“...I don't think I'm up for this.
Stomping all over without trying to
understand the native people...?"
[End]

-- ID 373 --
“It's not a matter of being up for it
or not. They may be part of the Core.
“We must not forget the possibility
that we may have to fight them at
some point."
[End]

-- ID 374 --
[F855] “But that's..."
[End]

-- ID 375 --
“Hey, what're you guys doing? Let's go!
If you don't hurry up, I'm going on
ahead!"
[End]

-- ID 376 --
[F855] “Wh--Arthur, you must stop this business
of forging on alone!"
[End]

-- ID 377 --
[F855] “...I guess we'll have to save the
debate for later. Let's hurry and
catch up with them, [F853]."
You quicken your pace as you try and
catch up with the impatient Arthur...
[End]

-- ID 378 --
“......"
You then notice that [F856], rather
than follow you, is standing in place.
She doesn't seem well...
[End]

-- ID 379 --
[Color:0x0005]What will you say to her?[Color:0x0000]
“Are you not feeling well?"
“Get a hold of yourself."
Silently stare at her
[End]

-- ID 380 --
“No, that's not it... I was just
thinking.
“About... what's right...
[F855] “But I'm okay. Don't worry about me."
The girl smiles back at you, but it does
not seem to reach her eyes.
You make a mental note of [F856]'s
apparent change in demeanor before
returning to the investigation.
[End]

-- ID 381 --
[F855] “Get a hold of... Yeah, you're right."
[F856] begins to walk after being
chastised, quickly catching up with
the others.
Could something be troubling her...?
You keep in mind [F856]'s change in
demeanor as you return to the journey.
[End]

-- ID 382 --
“Which way is right...?"
The girl mutters to herself, but then
notices your gaze and smiles, as if
trying to laugh it off.
[F855] [F802]“Sorry, [F853]. Didn't mean to
fall behind."
Could something be troubling her...?
You keep in mind [F856]'s change in
demeanor as you return to the journey.
[End]

There was a plot point raised that the forest folk were a defense mechanism for the Yggdrasil Core. Which got mostly scrubbed out of the final game, except M.I.K.E. mentions it when you talk to him after killing Gudanna. Whoops.

There's also an untranslated conversation that is also quite telling.

quote:

[End]

[End]

少女は質問には答えず、手紙をにぎりつぶし
冷めた目を君たちに向ける。
[End]

[End]

This untranslated conversation is the moment you were trying to hand Kuapala the letter in Story mode. Raquna attempts to hand it over and start negotiations, but Kupala rejects it. Unfortunately that's the only tidbit that survived, but that does shed some light on quite a few things. Story had the same Sandy Barrens plotline as Classic mode at some point. It was supposed to be a straight up clash rather than the whole disease justification, but you did attempt negotiations at some point. (None of this was in the original EO1. You just committed genocide no matter what in that game.)

quote:

-- ID 1100 --
[Color:0x0003]The forest folk's special serum
has weakened the Yggdrasil Core's
resistances!
[Color:0x0000][End]

There's also this unused text in the Yggdrasil Core battle that suggested you allied with them at some point, but we'll never know what really happened there.

Oh and yeah, there's this full body portrait of Kupala you never really see. She wears that outfit normally once she's your guildmaster, but the top part is obscured by the hood and the in-game portraits cut off there.

Taking the other games into account, the Forest Folk being created by the Core was probably always a false lead - and MIKE was being deliberately misleading about that point to get the party to accept the genocide mission.

Just about every Yggdrasil tree seems to have a demihuman race (or 3) engineered to care for it while the tree does its work. Visil was hoping that the adventurers would fail, but as their creator, he decided that the forest folk's lives were his to gamble with. Wheras MIKE's calculations were that they had outlived their usefulness because the tree was about to be destroyed anyway.

Of course a certain character from 4 has the best response to those lines of reasoning.

After silently following along this whole time, I think you game this game exactly as much justice as it deserved, and dispensed it well.

Thanks for the LP, was good all the way through.

quote:

If you're wondering how I know it's going to phase, I don't mentally add up all the damage or anything during a fight, as that's just a lot of needless work. I just read the HP bars. And here are a few tips on how to read them properly, because there are some things that can get in the way of the infomation you can gleam from it. What I'm about to say applies to every game in the series, so this can really help with really gauging an enemy's HP. The first and most important thing to keep in mind is that the HP bar isn't actually proportional to the actual amount of health the enemy has. Because of this, you really shouldn't try to estimate how much HP a boss has left just going off of that, as eyeballing through that method can frequently lead you to overestimating or underestimating when a boss phases, and that can really throw your strategy off. The bar being half depleted doesn't mean the enemy is at 50% HP. In fact, it's quite the opposite, with a half depleted bar meaning they're considerably above that threshold. Also for that matter, you'd think the bar being right at the middle of the arrow means 50% HP as well, right? That's also not the case. Instead it means they're below that threshold, with the actual threshold for 50% HP being just to the right of the arrow. If the bar is red, that means they're at 25% HP or lower. From there, I'm sure you can work out ways to estimate proper HP thresholds.

this is so stupid

For pasta~! CHARGE!

Why are HP bars non-linear?

Why the gently caress would you even program in non-linear bars?

Oh, I can trust you to do a great job with these LPs! They’re fun, informative, impressive, and all around a great read. Thanks to everyone for doing this, it’s been a blast to read!
