It hampers the flow a bit when Phoenix is hit by flash of insight and knows to how save his best friend's life or whatever, but has to spend a bit looking like a dumbass first.

Curse you Hayard-Gunnes!
Branch families, hoo boy.

Japanese inheritance is a bit different. Technically the leaders of the family are the honored dead. However, since they tend not to act directly, the de facto head of the family is the person who has possession of the family shrine. They're expected to use the shrine to consult with their ancestors on important family matters. The shrine is most frequently handed down from parent to child, so that nuclear family is the "head" family.

Branch families can be cousins, servants, hangers-on, people who were adopted. They're second tier, enjoying the protection of the family while owing service. They aren't usually in line to inherit the head position, but potentially the head of the family could name anyone in the family as their heir. The head of the family could also die without naming an heir, which can cause significant infighting. As you can imagine, the tension between the dopey but good-hearted legitimate heir and the ambitious, marginalized branch family child of similar age is a common trope in Japanese drama.

The usual moral of such stories is "Know your place, inferior" because Japan.

"Villain" is a variant spelling of the archaic villein, a feudal tenant in medieval England. Betraying the natural order by seeking a higher position or class than you were born to is a pretty widespread story for antagonists. The concept of "stay where you belong" is certainly well-embedded in English and French.

To give even further credence to the two insights above... given that the story of Jacob "stealing" Esau's birthright (the morality of the actors is probably best discussed elsewhere) is a somewhat important part of the bible, I think it's got some pretty ancient and widespread roots.

Yep. Paysan is the more direct meaning for peasant- agricultural farmer or serf.

Villein is more of a pejorative for someone who lives in a small village, and is thus gross and bad because rural people are dirty and smelly.

Case 2: Reunion, and Turnabout
Investigation, Day 1 (Part 3)

We're opening by questioning Lotta about what just happened.

: That gal... Maya. She wasn't the one that pulled the trigger, was she...?

: (Lotta doesn't know that when Maya is channeling, her whole physical appearance changes.)
: Then again... Weren't there only the two of 'em in there?
: I reckon she musta done it then...

: Lotta, what do you know about Dr. Grey?
: Not much, but I did some digging...
: That's one gent with a bad reputation.
: Really?
: I heard he's good at surgery and stuff, but his personality stinks like wet sheep.
: (I sort of got the same impression myself...)
: He's real controllin'.
: Soon as his nurse or patients don't do what he says, he starts a-hollerin'.
: Musta been real rough to work for him.

That's all we're going to learn here, so we'd better head back towards the scene of the crime.

: Ah, Mr. Wright.
: Ms. Fey! How's, um... Mystic... Maya?
: She has returned to "this world". The Spirit Severing Technique was successful.
: Let me see her, please!
: She is still unconscious. I humbly request that you wait outside for her recovery.
: (Guess I just have to wait... *sigh*)

Suddenly, the screen shakes, and someone rushes in.

: The police are here! Sorry to keep you waiting!
: Huh? ...You again!?
: What are you doing all the way out here, Detective Gumshoe?
: It's actually kinda funny. I was in the area for a business trip, pal.
: Well, time to check out the crime scene. I'll have to question everyone here later on,
: so just sit tight, alright?
: (Why is he grinning at me...?)
: Shall I show you to the scene of the crime, Detective Gymshoe?
: Um... My name isn't Gymshoe...

They leave.

: (The two of them went into the Channeling Chamber... I guess all I can do for now is see what everyone else has to say...)

First up, following them.

: (The police are busily running here and there, and I don't see Maya anywhere...)
: H-Hey, you! Don't touch anything!
: Look, I really need to ask you some questions!
: Umm... Don't look at me like I'm some sort of uncaring jerk... Tell you what, pal. I'll let you ask me a few questions, alright?

His generosity only extends so far, however. If we try to examine anything, Gumshoe gets upset.

: Hey, pal! No touching without my permission!
: I'm just looking at it.
: Hey, I can't be too careful if a kid like her can be a murder suspect, now can I?
: (I guess if I want to search this room, I'm going to have to come back later...)

He's also too busy to look at anything we present. But he will answer questions!

: Um, about Maya...
: I hate to break this to you, pal, but... with the way things look now, that girl's the only one who could've done it.
: (Yeah. Only Maya and the victim were inside the room, after all...) But Maya is...
: You can ask more about her later, pal.
: Right now, I've got a job to do and that's collecting evidence.
: (Detective Gumshoe looks like a real professional. and yet, something about his expression still looks the same...)

: So... Dr. Grey was shot with a gun, huh?
: He was shot in the forehead.
: But...
: But...?
: But he was also stabbed in the chest with a knife.
: (...A knife?)
: After being stabbed, the final blow was a shot from a gun.

That's about all we're getting out of Gumshoe, so it's time to check out the Side Room.

: (Hmm, I'm pretty sure there was someone sleeping here earlier...)
: Like, how can I help you?

: Um, like, so isn't it about time to start?
: Huh? Time to start what?
: You know, like, the channeling!
: Channeling...? Oh, oh, oh, oh!! No, actually, the situation has kind of changed...

: Please stay calm, but... a murder has taken place!
: ...

: Yes! A person has killed another person!
: Oh, that's... Uh... What are the words I'm looking for...? It's like...
: ...like totally a bummer.
: ...Yeah... (After all that effort, that's all she had to say?)
: Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to, like, introduce myself.
: My name is Ini Miney. Um... At the college, I'm researching and studying "parapsychology".
: "Parapsychology"?
: That's right.
: Um... I think people, like, usually call it, "occult studies" or something.
: Like supernatural phenomenon, ESP and psychic powers. That sort of stuff.
: (That's pretty out there...) I'm Phoenix Wright, attorney at law.

If we present her with her own profile...

: What!? ...Y-You're joking, right?
: Ha ha, like, of course I am, silly!
: (Oh, thank goodness...)

And if we present Maya...

: She's, like, totally waaaay famous! Like, well, for people like us, like, you know?
: ("Waaaay famous"? Maya?)
: I mean, like, she's, like, the daughter of the Master, right?
: (Hmm... Well, at least she remembers some things.)

: So what brings you here today?
: Um, like, so... I was the one who told Dr. Grey about this place. He asked me, like, "Do you know of a good spirit medium?"
: (Hmm, Dr. Grey did say something about being introduced to this place.)
: Cause, like, talking to dead people and, like, multiple personalities are my thing...
: I see... Then why were you taking a nap here?

: Huh?
: I'm, like, allergic to sesame seeds. They, like, must've put some in the food they served for lunch.
: Oh, that doesn't sound fun.
: So I, like, felt sick, and came in here to, like, sleep.
: I totally feel, like, I've wasted my time 'cause I, like, slept a long time.

: So you were sleeping here the entire time?
: Yeah. Ever since lunch...
: So you don't know anything about the murder that took place?
: Like what? Oh that! I, like, totally know nothing.
: So who was, like, you know, killed...?
: The surgeon that requested the channeling, Dr. Grey.
: ...

: You and Dr. Grey knew each other, right?

: Oh really...? That's not exactly what Dr. Grey said...

: Like, a long, long time ago...
: I was, like, a patient, yeah.
: (She sounds like she's trying to hide something...)

Whatever it is, however, we won't be getting it out of her right now. To the Winding Way!

: (There's no one here... as usual.)

: ...
: You're Pearl, right?
: ...
: (Hmm. Silent as ever...)

: (I've seen it somewhere before...)

No matter what we say or present, Pearl will react the same way.

: Um...

And she runs off.

: (...What is it!? Is it my hair? Is it too spiky? Not spiky enough!?)

So maybe we should talk to Lotta again. Maybe she's recovered from her shock.

: ...
: (She's probably scared out of her wits after having a murder take place right near her.) Lotta?
: GAWDDON'TLETITBEMENEXT!
: Eek! Don't scare me like that!
: What do ya mean!? Yer the one scaring me! If I weren't so tough, you'd have another dead body on yer hands -- mine!

: Did you see or notice anything that stuck out at you?
: Nah... Well, maybe one thing...
: What is it!?
: Turns out my poor stomach's not good at handlin' this kind of thing.
: Huh-what?
: Curses and ghosts and stuff comin' back to get ya... This is just too much, I say.
: What is too much?
: Being an occult photographer.
: That's some scary stuff, so I think I'm gonna try being a celebrity photographer, now.
: Going after photos more within your reach from now on? More glamour, less gore?
: ...
: What's up?
: Oh, yeah!
: Wh-What is it?
: I took some hot pictures earlier!
: Huh?
: Remember!? I took some pictures at the murder scene inside!
: (Ack! She did! Two even!)
: "The Séance Murder"...
: I sure like the ring of that. It'll be a sensational story!
: L-Lotta!
: Sorry, but my journalistic sense is burnin' inside me! Hate to cut and run, but I'm headin' back in! Gotta beat those cops to the scoop of the century! UWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

...yeah, she's gone.

: (I don't know who's scarier... Lotta or the spirits... And why does it feel like we've been through this before...?)

Might as well follow her.

: Oh, dear madam... You have such impeccable timing.
: Like, what's all the buzz?
: Ahem. Alright everyone, listen up! You too, pal!
: I'm going to give you all a brief update! Right now, it looks like the investigation's not going to be done until real late...
: That is a terrible shame. I propose that everyone sleep here under the roof of the Fey Manor tonight.

: (Maya was arrested and taken away by the police. And I don't see myself getting any sleep tonight...)

: (*yawn* Uuugh... Morning... I guess I must have nodded off at some point... I hope Maya's OK. I should hurry and get to the Detention Center, ASAP!)

: N... Nick! Nick!
: I...!
: Maya!
: What am I going to do!? I never imagined it would
: turn out like this!
: Calm down, Maya! Take deep breaths.

: (It all started right here, in this detention center...)

: I finally get to see you again, and...
: It's not your fault. You didn't do it.
: No, I... I did it... I killed that person.
: But that wasn't you.
: It doesn't matter. It might as well have been me. I was too weak... and I... I couldn't control the spirit's power, so...
: (I don't want to bring up the case quite yet, but...)
: ...You don't have to be nice to me. I understand.

First, a brief look around.

: Smile, you're on candid camera.

: This guard monitors the visitor's room. I wonder if he's bored. Not that I can tell since he never looks over this way.

Now, to chat with Maya. If we present Pearl...

: Huh? What are you talking about?
: Who I think the next Master should be... I mean, she's got more spiritual power than me, and she really works hard at her training...
: (Talk about bringing the mood down even futher... *sigh*)

If we present Maya...

: (I should've known better...)

And Morgan...

: Not now... that this has happened...
: It's alright, Maya. I'm sure she understands. She's on our side, after all.
: Yeah, I know... But still...

And Dr. Grey...

: Ack! I'm sorry! (Why did I pull this picture out!?)

: So you're the Master or something of the Kurain School of Channeling...?
: Actually, my mother is for now. But since that title is passed from mother to daughter, I guess I will be someday...
: But many people think that channeling isn't real, that it's all just an act.
: You believe in us, don't you?
: Yeah... because I've seen it with my own eyes. (When Maya's channeling a spirit... not only her voice, but her whole appearance changes. It's a supernatural phenomenon that occurs every time.)

: (Dr. Grey said that he wanted to call the nurse, so...)

: What exactly happened in the Channeling Chamber?
: ...

: and sat down across from him.
: OK...
: We closed our eyes... and I began the channeling.
: (This is sounding kind of creepy... like the beginning of a scary story...)

: What?
: After a spirit comes into my body, I lose my self, my consciousness.
: Then you don't remember a single thing?
: When I came to, I was being held in my aunt's arms.
: And there was blood... all over my clothes.
: (Hmm...)
: Oh! But... I do remember having a dream.
: A dream...?

: What kind of dream did you have while you were channeling...?
: Um... I can't remember it all that well, but...
: I was dead and buried in the ground. I couldn't move... and it was unbearable... Really suffocating... ...It went something like that.
: I... I see... (I have no idea what to say to that...)
: There was a really familiar smell too...
: Under the ground?
: Yeah, I can't quite place it, but I know I've smelled that same scent before...
: ... (...I guess this is about all the information I'm going to gather for today...) I'll be back later, Maya. In the meantime, please make sure you prepare it, OK?
: Huh? "It"? What is "it"?
: The document requesting me to be your attorney, of course.

: ...! But...
: What's wrong?
: Are you sure? I mean, I'm guilty! I'm a murderer!
: No one's decided that yet.
: But I did! I killed that person... with these... two hands...!
: That's enough, Maya.
: It's hopeless! If you defend me, you'll lose, I'm sure...
: Stop it!
: ...
: ...Help me... Nick, help me... I'm scared...
: Don't worry, I will. When is the trial?
: It sounds like tomorrow.
: (As usual, zero prep time...) Alright. I'm going now.
: Wait.
: ...?

: Give this to Pearly... And I'm sure she'll lend you her spiritual powers.

If we immediately present it...

: Make sure you show that to Pearly, OK, Nick? I'm sure she'll be a big help to you.

Yeeesh. Just reading Ini Miney has me wanting to pull my own hair out; thank goodness this wasn't voiced... I know this is a series of people with gimmicks but hers is trying.

And the victim was shot and stabbed, you say? So somehow a knife and a gun somehow found their way into the chamber... or something to stab with, anyway; it needn't be a knife (And Grey, as a surgeon, is more likely to carry something like a scalpel, though why he would take such a thing into this ritual is anyone's guess). And then there's the weird bit with Ini having introduced the place to Grey, but then immediately claiming not to know them one question later...

I'm pretty sure he's referring to Ini there, and not the concept of the supernatural. Or perhaps the idea of going to school to study this kind of stuff. Remember, Phoenix went to law school (presumably), so he's likely got a mountain of student loan debt looming over his head, and the idea of getting yourself into that much debt to study spooks for a living might be a foreign concept to him.

It's an annoying gimmick to be sure, but at least they didn't add in any annoying sound like what they did for Meekins. And I'm going to be really annoyed with Lotta if she decides to run to the police claiming she's a huge witness again.

Speculation, but I wonder if either the knife or the gun were planted there. I mean, it's pretty overkill. And it's from the previous update, but Morgan Fey being so quick to push Phoenix out from the room seemed awfully suspicious. If she's the killer and was the one to plant one or both of the weapons, I don't know how she could have killed Dr. Grey when she was out with Phoenix.

Case 2: Reunion, and Turnabout
Investigation, Day 1 (Part 4)

: (I have to save Maya, no matter what! It's her life on the line! What in the world happened in that room yesterday?)

We immediately head inside.

: (The Meditation Room nurtures all mediums young and old. Even mediums in training, I'd wager. But it's pretty deserted today... ...probably because of the murder yesterday...)

And from here, to the crime scene!

: It looks like Detective Gumshoe isn't here today... I should take this chance and thoroughly check this room. If I'm lucky, I might uncover a clue or two...
: Oh, Mr. Wright.
: Good morning.
: I am on my way to go meet Mystic Maya, and I thought to bring her some items to make her feel more at home.
: Namely, tea so bitter you lose your tongue and jaw-droppingly large strawberry desserts.
: I'm sure Maya will be very grateful...
: That's "Mystic Maya", good sir!
: (Urk. She is one scary lady.)
: Oh, dear, sweet Mystic Maya... Pearl wept constantly for you last night, as did I.
: (I know it's important for me to search the site, but I should ask her some questions too, while I have the chance...)

First, evidence gathering.

: It's a beautiful and expensive folding screen. It also looks quite old. There seems to be some sort of sacred text written on it, but I can't read it. ... ! Th-This is...

: This is where the medium sits, I assume. There are 4 panels of this flooring. The straw in the flooring feels a little damp, probably from the humidity in the air. No matter what I do, my eyes keep getting drawn to the pool of blood in the center here.

Time to chat with Morgan.

: I would like to ask you a few questions about what happened yesterday.
: Do you mean that awful tragedy?

: M-Maya?
: Step away from there!
: Please leave this area to me. Go quickly and inform the police!

: Well... First, I struck Mystic Maya on the head.
: To make her go unconscious, correct?
: That is correct.
: Next, I performed the Spirit Severing Technique.
: "Spirit Severing Technique"?
: The spirit of that nurse was inside of Mystic Maya's body. I used the technique to send the nurse's spirit back to the other world.
: (I wonder if this kind of testimony is even admissible in a court of law...)

: By the way, what is this room exactly...?
: The Channeling Chamber?
: This room was created for the sole purpose of preventing such a tragedy as yesterday.
: What do you mean?
: Sometimes, when an inexperienced medium calls an especially strong spirit, that spirit may become violent and revolt, as you witnessed yesterday.
: Revolt? But how?
: When a spirit enters a medium's body, she loses her will and her self steps aside. To put it another way, the spirit is borrowing the medium's body, good sir.
: But isn't that extremely dangerous?
: An experienced medium has little problem controlling a spirit.
: But Maya... I mean, Mystic Maya... That was her first channeling...
: And that was why I insisted on locking the door. However, I never thought that would be calling danger upon the client himself...
: I am grateful that one of our heirlooms was not damaged in this horrible incident.
: And that is...?
: It is that folding screen there. It is the Kurain Sacred Writings. Along with the Kurain Sacred Urn, they are this village's most treasured possessions.
: If I ever found out that something had happened to either one...
: Oh, the inhumanity...
: (Odd for her to be worrying about the folding screen at a time like this... I guess that isn't just some dilapidated old screen after all...)

If we present the folding screen...

: This is the Kurain Channeling Technique Sacred Writings. There are 6 panels in all.
: I see... But that's not what caught my eye. You see this hole here...?
: It is an old screen, you see. It is only logical that perhaps a bug or worm of some sort is the culprit.
: (Even though this looks nothing like the eating patterns of any bug I know...)

While we're in here, we'll present the Magatama!

: Wh-What is it?
: That... That is Mystic Maya's Magatama.
: Why would you have this in your possession!?
: I-I'm sorry!
: Return it to Mystic Maya at once!
: Y-Yes, madam! (Why did I feel like I was being scolded by my own mother just now...?)

Anyway, back to questions.

: So... How is Pearl today...?
: Mr. Wright.
: Y-Yes?
: In this world, Pearl is my most treasured possession. When compared even to Mystic Maya, Pearl has the spiritual power to become a Master.
: Th-That's very impressive.
: Until now, the women of the branch family have thought themselves to be inferior.
: ... But. Pearl is different! Her spiritual strength is so great; even greater than some of the main family! Yes, Pearl is a channeling prodigy and is the pride of the branch family!
: (Wow... She's really fired up now...)
: In any case...
: Our world is so different from yours, perhaps it is best for you to quit, good sir.
: "Quit"? Quit what?
: Well, then, I do believe it is time for me to take my leave.
: Alright. Please tell Maya I said hi.
: What was that!?
: Uh, I mean, Mystic Maya.
: I will tell her.

She leaves.

: (...*sigh*)

Now, we head to the Winding Way.

: (Little Pearl isn't here today... Maybe she's at school?)

: Oh, hey! Like, you're that guy from yesterday... The, uh, dentist guy...

: No, no, I'm a lawyer.
: That's right! Um... Mr. Smith, Esquire.
: ...That's "Wright". Wait, I mean, you're wrong. My name is "Wright".
: "Smith", "Wright"...
: Well, I got, like, three letters, at least.
: (I don't think she gets the point...) Anyway, why are you here?
: So, like, I study this thing called "parapsychology" at this college and...
: Um, you told me about that yesterday. The sesame allergy, too. What I'd really like to know is why you're still here today?
: Oh! So, like, that's what you meant! Like, you shoulda been more, like, clear about it!
: S-Sorry. My bad.
: No, it's OK. Like, it's really...
: ...
: ...?
: ...That's it? Why'd you stop mid-sentence!?
: Did I?
: ...So, like... what was I talking about again...?
: ... (If Lotta ever wanted another "genuine mysterious phenomenon", it's right here.)

We take a look around, first.

: You left the blanket a mess. Are you going to fold it?
: Like I had a really good nap, and, like...
: I was thinking of leaving it like this, so, like, it's all set for tonight.

: Hmm, now where did this box come from? I'm sure this wasn't here last night. It looks like a box for storing clothes... But it's pretty big for just clothes... It's mostly empty, but a few folded pieces of channeling costumes sit at the bottom.

Now, to question Ini.

: So? Why are you still here today?
: Like, there's so much for me to, like, study here!
: Like what?
: Like, the medium's training, or like, how they inherit their spiritual power.
: (I suppose... This village is the real thing, after all.)
: So, like, I asked if I could stay here for, like, a little longer.
: (She sure seems like the care-free type, at least, on the surface...)

: Have you heard about the murder?
: It's, like, totally scary.
: (...she says, with a silly smile plastered on her face...) ...So do you know anything about it that might help?
: ...
: (Somehow, I don't think she has a grip on reality, let alone what's going on here.)

: About the victim, Dr. Grey...
: I don't know who you're talking about.
: ...Like... Wait, I think you asked about him, like, yesterday, too...
: (That's right... Her reaction yesterday when I asked was...)

: Oh really...? That's not exactly what Dr. Grey said...

: ...Well, uh... Like, a long, long time ago...
: I was, like, a patient, yeah.

: ...Like, is something wrong?

However, that's about all we're getting out of Ini right now. Back outside!

: ...
: Ack! Y-You surprised me!
: ...
: And how are you today?
: ...
: (Hmm... I gues she isn't open to friendly chatting...)

: (...It looks like the same thing she had yesterday...)

There's really only one thing to do here if we want Pearl's cooperation.

: ...

: (If Morgan sees us like this, I'll be the next one they're channeling...)

: ...Huh!? (Sh-She actually spoke!)
: Who are you...?
: I-I'm Phoenix Wright. I, uh, worked with Maya...
: ...Y-You worked with Mystic Maya...? You... You're Mr. Nick, right?
: ...Uh, excuse me? (I bet I know who she picked "Nick" up from...)
: I know who you are.

: WH-WH-WH-WHAT!?

: You're going to help Mystic Maya, aren't you? That's what you're going to do, right?
: W-Well, yeah... I will...
: Oh wow... It's like a beautiful fairy tale! That earnest look shinging brightly in your eyes... It must be true love...
: ...Wh-What!? (Why am I being boiled into a bright red lobster by this little kid!?)
: I'm so jealous of Mystic Maya! Ah, what a wonderful relationship...
: W-Wait... I... Uhh... I mean... We aren't... Things aren't like...
: Hee hee, I can tell you're a good person.
: Alright, Mr. Nick!

We'll start with presenting stuff. First, the Magatama.

: That is Mystic Maya's Magatama. It's one of the most important heirlooms of Kurain Village.
: Please make sure to take good care of it.
: Y-Yeah, I will. (Is it really OK for me to have such a priceless object?)

And the screen.

: The Kurain Sacred Writings are on this folding screen.
: Oh? Is that what's written on it? Actually, what caught my eye was this "hole" in it...

: so I think that maybe bugs made it by eating through it.
: (...It sure doesn't look like something bugs can make...)

And Maya.

: She's so smart, and pretty, and kind, and loving. She's always cheerful, never gets sick, isn't picky, and has good sleeping habits. She always wakes up before me, and always eats breakfast before me too. And she has you; such a wonderful person with whom she can share a lo--
: Ack! OK, OK! I get the idea! (She really thinks the world of Maya, doesn't she?)

And Pearl herself.

: But my mother won't let me.
: Your hair now suits you quite well, though, I think.
: R-Really? Th-Thank you! *fidget, fidget* *fidget, fidget*

And Morgan!

: She takes really good care of me and loves me very much.
: She says I'm the "pride of the branch family"... But I don't know what that means.
: ("Branch family"... That concept is probably still too hard for little Pearl...)

And, of course, we can question Pearl.

: Pearl, are you friends with Maya?

: I want to be like Mystic Maya when I grow up. I really look up to her.
: Wow, I had no idea Maya was so... revered.
: Usually when people don't use Mystic Maya's title, I get mad.
: O-Oh, sorry.
: But if it's you, Mr. Nick, then it's OK.
: Because... Because... you're "special" to her.
: (Where in the world did she get an idea like that??)
: By the way... this may be rude, but which channeling school are you from?
: Which channeling school?
: Yes. For example, I study the Kurain technique.
: ... Ah, I get it! No, no, no. I'm a lawyer. A lawyer.
: ...Law...yer?
: Yup.
: ...Is that related to spirit mediums in any way...?
: (Um... None that I know of...) Wait, are you telling me you don't know what a lawyer is?

: (Maya did say Pearl doesn't know much about the outside world...)

: So what's that you've got there, Pearl?

: Hmm...

: Alright, well, if you really want to give it to me...
: Hee hee. You look like a child at a toy store, Mr. Nick!
: (...She not only speaks in a refined manner, but laughs in one, too!)

: Um, Mr. Nick...?
: Yes, Pearls? I can call you that, right? You're too cute to just call you Pearl.

: Yeah, it's OK. I was told to give it to you.
: But, I can't accept something like this!
: ...All I really should do is charge the Magatama with spiritual energy...
: Spiritual energy?

: ...What do you mean?
: It will let you see people's secrets.
: See people's... secrets...?
: Yes.
: ...If it's alright with you, I would like to accompany you for a little while.
: I can explain the Magatama's power to you when we meet someone hiding a secret.

Next time: Literal magic.

Battler, the literal stupidest man on earth. Why are you even here, Battler, why did you come back to this place so you could fuck literally everything up?
So... what, now nick has a magic thingamajig that tells him people's "secrets?" It can't just read thoughts or there would be no mystery...

Everyone's being awfully cagey about that hole in the screen, aren't they? Especially Morgana, who just said it was a sacred treasure... an unexplained hole doesn't miff her at all?

I'm pretty sure I saw the episode in the cartoon where this is solved, so now I can't speculate. :sigh:

Speaking of which, the Pheonix Wright anime is genuinely good from what I can remember and worth a watch if you haven't seen it already (it's only 24 episodes long and covers the first two games). The live action film isn't terrible either.

It's a living.
WOOHOO! NEW THREAD!

*ahem*

Ah, the first appearance of the magatama, and its magic lawyer shenanigans. JFA is my least favorite of the first three games, it's true, but an awful lot of good stuff started here. Like Pearl. Little baby Pearl. She's just great.

You rock, Rattus.

Revelry in the Dark

ah the Magatama, it's probably one of my favorite puzzle mechanics in video games in general

Are you a pack of imbeciles!?

They weren't joking about Pearl having a ton of spiritual power, she just casually put enough power in the magatama to last 5 games and almost a decade of in-universe time :stare:.

Hereby it is manifest that during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is of every man against every man.

The series increases the supernatural elements so slowly that you can forget Ace Attorney 1 barely had them. You can see that right now: Ace Attorney 1 has Phoenix have a ghost-summoning sidekick who isn't particularly good at spirit channeling and whose abilities are iffy. Ace Attorney 2 has two different magic spirit channel clan girls and Phoenix himself has a magical talisman.

This is Japanifornia. The most it can probably give us is testimony that the prosecution already has. :v:

Black Thursday was a disaster, plain and simple.
We lost too many good people, too many planes.
We can't let that kind of tragedy happen again.

I really love how the mainline games (I guess the games written by Shuu Takumi) does it. This plotline just feels like a natural extension from the first game after the player has accepted that spirit-channeling mediums is a thing in the Ace Attorney world. One of the natural questions that follows is how they learned that sort of technique, followed by where. Good stuff!

Let's see if Phoenix knows how to handle an apparently magical tool of high importance properly. :allears:

The victim here, the rear end in a top hat doctor who wants to summon a ghost to acquit him of any wrongdoing in a malpractice claim, is exactly the sort of mundane bullshit a spirit channeler would put up with irl.
