I'm about a dozen hours in. I don't know that I like a ton about the game in the abstract, because the missions are definitely repetitive (particularly lairs), and the story is questionable at best.

It's pretty fun to actually play though. One of the main gameplay complaints I read in a bunch of reviews that I think is particularly valid is the fact that there isn't a lot of feedback when you are getting hit. It's really easy to get a guy killed / almost killed before you even notice that you are taking a bunch of damage.

The shooting is fun, and there is quite a bit of variety in how you construct your team. At the moment I'm running with Fortune, Scheherazade, and Kingpin, but there aren't a ton of agents I don't like. Joule kind of sucks, Hollywood is boring, and Yeti seems awfully week. The other 9 all seem viable (I don't have Gat).

Overall I'm having a ton of fun with it, but I think it's flawed. I'll definitely keep playing it.

Yeah, Joule seems like she would be fun but playing her just turns into "hide behind something and keep tapping the "buff turret" button occasionally and wait until the shooting stops". For a game that mostly seems like its gameplay loop is [a picture of a tasmanian devil duel wielding uzis] she's definitely a bit of an odd duck.

I'll second the lack of feedback. Just did a boss fight there that involved a lot of turrets and they just chewed me to bits without me realising because the actual boss was flying around everywhere and I was looking at him instead. Mostly my fault, I'll admit, but still...

I have a feeling the lack of feedback is because there's times when you can have so many enemies surrounding you they wanted to make sure you're not being completely stunlocked in place and then ded. At the very least melee attacks on you always seem to have some type of feedback.

Joule is an odd duck because she's so situational. She's great for fracking events, for example. She can bypass the hacking mini games on the controls, and you can use your turret to pull aggro during the cooldown. And her mayhem is INCREDIBLY powerful.

I was running with her, Daisy, and Braddock (aka the One Woman Agency), but eventually swapped Joule for Fortune. Fortune just does more damage consistently in comparison.

Anytime you see orange damage numbers instead of white that's a critical hit. There's a random chance if you're hitting anywhere but the head (and I've seen one agent have an upgrade that can boost this) but headshots will usually count as one.

Just thinking about headshots. Though by sheer numbers alone the amount of bullets she spews might do it anyway.

I've been tearing things up with Joule. I put her turret down and then start electrocuting enemies while constantly dash-dodging. The dash-dodging doesn't disrupt her weapon for that long and because of its nature you don't have to be accurate with it so you can keep it up for pretty much the whole fight without problem.

Hah. That sound mixing problem is really obvious in this one mission. Not-Justin bieber's car alarm is going off and it's him singing as the characters complain about how loud and obnoxious it is. But it sounds like a distant whisper.

Yeah that's the most swingy aspect of variable difficulty and disparate character levels. Even though I just got Oni and he's skyrocketed to level 11 already from hanging out with Hollywood and Yeti, All 10 levels gone whole hog into +50% special ability power is still leaving bog standard troopers alive if I try to open up with it on difficulty 8.

That feeling when high power special move headshots can't quite kill trash fodder enemies. Whether it's a generic helltrooper or random police bot "oh look, a civilian overwatch police bot. Let's shoot him in the back of the head execution style... Half heath out of their 1,300 max :sigh:".

I've got a good feeling about him though, and on demand panic even with his default skill not killing things has given plenty of breathing room. It also helps to remind myself that Oni already has over 2,000 shields, when holy poo poo Rama still only has about 800 shields according to the agents listings.

So I managed to get around my two bugs earlier. One solution was obvious in hindsight but the other not so much.

For the planetarium I just restarted and made absolute sure to not trigger any optional objectives before finishing it.

The Kingpin mission was weirder. I kept noticing people at the party section randomly turning angry so I went around and smashed all the hate machines in that quadrant. This somehow fixed the mission (the issues seem to have been related to that annoying tutorial/objective bug.)

And holy poo poo is Gat a BEAST. I'm not sure what's more broken, his shotgun range, or his Mayhem skill, because good lord, that thing just murders anything even remotely 'in range'.

Trying to activate a short ranged ability that inflicts vulnerability only to get chain interrupted makes you something something. He's just so enthusiastic, but in practice he feels so very "Almost but not quite good enough". An Ultimate that explicitly says it's not allowed to kill anything by default isn't helping matters :v:

I'd find him less of a struggle to actively used if he probably didn't have the worst of it in "Videogame shotgun ranges" territory. Gat spoiled me compared to Hardtack, but Hardtack spoils me compared to Redcard's shotgun mode.

EDIT: So many "Get X on Melee/Skill kill" effects that will never trigger when you need them because you use them when it will soften up a bunch of enemies to almost dead rather than dead dead at full power. Thank got Braddock inflicts enfeeble on melee by default, because Gat's knife has apparently forgotten how to finish off enemies that can survive getting skullfucked by a shotgun blast as the difficulty climbs :v:

Things i would have done differently with AoM, an incomplete list:

* Squishier enemies, but a lot more of them, go hogwild
* better hit/low health notifications
* a more obvious/exposed to the player system for superweapons appearing, bases flipping etc
* more incentive for mixing teams up, you get stuck with what works, and what works is gunnery sergeant janelle braddock applied directly to the forehead
* little less fragmentation of the story, i spent half the game wondering when i was going to find out what persephone's deal was and then i stumbled onto the cutscenes on the computer
* minigame where i can go back to the ark whenever i want and kick the poo poo out of august gaunt

That was me and it was the computer I was talking about, yeah.

I got Joule and I actually like her a bunch. Her weapon will prioritize enemies over healing her turret and enemies will concentrate on it rather than her. So best thing I've found is basically to dance and jump around enemies while popping whichever ability she's got equipped. Faster firing rate is pretty dang good and the cooldown is fast.

This reminds me of how races in MMOs move. The big ones always look like they move slower than the small ones because they have to adjust their animation so all of them move at the same speed even though they're built very differently. So like in WoW a gnome will look like a tiny speedster and a tauren will look like the slowest lumbering ox.

More than needing to reclaim, what bugs me about all the piles of Legion stuff cropping up in the world is their habit of-

A: Showing up within aggro range of where you spawn in. That's just obnoxious "Okay what am I going to do today-oh there are fracking expliosions under my feet already".

B: How often they have cross coverage with eachother. "Oh there is a hate machine and drop pod launcher loving with me while I try to disable this Fracker"

C: How overkill some of these are. Like the drop pod launcher firing drop pods on top of you when you want to hack it. And will keep dropping pods on top of itself for five solid minuts before you say gently caress skilled gameplay or clearing breathing room, time to use Yeti to smash the Y button I guess.

But yes, them refreshing when you go back to base, the only way to change cars/agents, makes the above even more obnoxious. Even ignoring the stuff like "There I got all of Relic's stores back again-oh I'm missing some already?".

Unrelated to that, but related to videogame health in general. I wish games made fodder enemies have mercy rules where if you headshot them for 90% of their health, just have them loving die.

It's a bitch in Mass Effect, it's a bitch here, why put ten levels into better crits when a headshot still leaves the bottom of the barrel enemies alive due to scaling, gently caress.

Zaa Boogie posted:

Yeti is my favorite to roofjump with due to the combination of his animations and my full well knowing this :3:

I'm mixed on Daisy. If she didn't have a trillion shields I wouldn't be using her so much now that I've got her from how slow she is to actually kill things at times. "Okay, so my gun overheated again, let's use that ramming speed and higher melee damage I have during her cooldown special!.. come on, shoulde check, gun swing... come on... you're a loving swarm trooper recolor why are you still alive." And this is dropping the difficulty down to five or so to give my latest batch of newbies breathing room. Because they are "Only" level 10+

Really, really good at giving breathing room for the team though. So even though she's not living up to her murderous reputation she's still getting poo poo done for me consistently. Go figure roller derby girl is the "Slow but steady" fighter for me to set things up for Pierce to clean house with his tiny SMG. (I am very glad Pierce is good. His ranked enemy damage keeps him relevant long term too)

Yeah, that's not happening here. I claimed the southwest Outpost (the one that requires a Master Programmer to take over), did the Relic mission for that outpost, ran out to the central outpost to deal with a golem near there, and by the time I'd finished killing the golem, the southwest Outpost was back under Legion control.
