12 months ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the governing national party would win a fourth term. since then, everything's been shook up:
q+a what kind of electoral system does new zealand have? there are about 120 members of parliament (mps), elected using a mixed-member proportional (mmp) system. it's good. when is the election? september 23 who are any of these people? why should i care? maybe you like following other countries' politics, idk. i've compared the politicians to their closest amerikan equivalents to help u out. lord of the rings reference comparing politics to children's media is a sign of brain disease imo ___ what are the parties/candidates???? BILL ENGLISH, national party (60 seats) (tim kaine) conservative catholic farmer, leader of the main centre-right party. english was finance minister for the past 8 years, didn't go all austerity during the gfc - the economy is in a pretty good shape. this guy has no charisma, gently caress! JACINDA ARDERN, labour party (32 seats) (barack obama) the 5th labour leader in 8 years. young, has name recognition, talks like a human being, big ol' teeth. labour is your typical western social democratic party. it went hard neoliberal in the 80s, third-way in the 90s. ardern's leadership has raised labour's polling to ~37%, with her preferred prime minister ranking the same as bill english's. accused of being more style than substance, hasn't yet deviated from her predecessor's policy programme. JAMES SHAW / (bernie sanders / the default left-wing option. a loose coalition of socialists, bike tories, urban liberals, hippies etc. metiria turei owned. their polling has at least halved since ardern's ascension. WINSTON PETERS, new zealand first (11 seats) (donald trump) nationalist anti-immigrant party. loved by retirees, the alienated working class, farmers, etc. winston's been doing the right-wing populism thing for like 20 years, he's been polling really well this time. nz first is much more ethnically diverse than, say, ukip – they've traditionally had quite strong māori support for example. winston is going to be the kingmaker in whichever coalition government emerges after the election, unfortunately. TE URUROA FLAVELL / MARAMA FOX, māori party (2 seats) (no real equivalent) indigenous rights party, has been in a confidence and supply agreement with the national party. at risk of being eliminated by a resurgent labour. DAVID SEYMOUR, act party (1 seat) (rand paul) libertarian party. these guys loving suck. PETER DUNNE, united future party (1 seat) (one of those 'honourable' trust the process dipshits) bowtie, big hair, lib dem. might lose his seat. GARETH MORGAN, the opportunities party (no seats) (michael bloomberg) new vanity party started by millionaire economist gareth morgan. technocratic morons who want evidence-based policy or whatever. ubi, sugar tax, teach kids to code, etc. this country is bad, happy to answer any questions

The key difference for you yankee doodle dandies is that while it's near impossible to get rid of a president no matter how bad they're stinking up the place, prime ministers have been dropping like flies throughout the Commonwealth the last decade

some more politic's happened today folks peter dunne is the third party leader to step down in as many weeks (he's a party of one). he's held the electorate of ōhāriu for 33 years, but recent polling showed labour's greg o'connor solidly in the lead. due to a quirk of our electoral system, minor parties that win an electorate seat can gain greater representation than their vote share deserves. the national party has been supporting dunne and act's david seymour in their respective electorates in the hopes they can get that sweet sweet overhang. anyway, here's to peter dunne, whose tedious centrism never achieved anything and then he died https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNa20hm_0K0 etalian posted:I'm glad to see US style democrats are in New Zealand. there's a joke that the entire nz political spectrum fits inside the democrat party. gareth morgan is a major piece of poo poo who talks like sylvester the cat, and his supporters are entirely tech guy idiots etalian posted:C/D *taps q+a in the op*

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEQpNrVhwSE this series is good, a public radio journalist is travelling the country & asking young people about politics & issues etc. if u prefer insider wonk bullshit, this weekly podcast is pretty deece. it's a semi-hate listen for me, but it's got some of the best analysis. media is pretty dire here in general. the 2 big parties have released their first election ads. they're really similar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrEJr-TE7VA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Mq_Cf_RZvY today the nats released this one, which is identical to one they used for the 2014 election but with running this time. oh yeah, the 2014 one got them sued for using a blatant eminem ripoff, lol. 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU4Sa6yowB0 2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=470bdH73TUY here's the 2017 video with the 2014 audio: https://twitter.com/Yorrike/status/901038060292382721 R. Mute posted:could we get a rundown of all the candidates' opinions on the nz flag debate ENGLISH: ARDERN: SHAW: PETERS: also nz first added little flags to their desks in the house (still have them) & godwinned the only good entry Troy Queef posted:whatever happened to the Kim Dotcom and some lefties party? that was weird. dotcom got illegally surveilled by the gcsb (nsa equivalent) and arrested, and formed the 'internet party' to try fight extradition or whatever. that party was led by laila harré, who is good as hell, and had a weird alliance with the mana (a small māori radical party led by hone harawira). dotcom became the focus of the entire election campaign (he's represented by the purple guy in that 2014 ad!), and internet-mana crashed and burned. the 2014 election was dumb as gently caress.
