I wonder how much emphasis they'll put on the remains of roman civilisation. Could be a decent way to add more variety to the Danish and Anglo-Saxon architecture you'll be scrambling over.

I'm pretty certain there was a very small amount of Irish monks settled on Iceland before the Danes arrived, so if they set a DLC there that makes a decent excuse to have human enemies kicking about.

Unit's Paris was one of the best cities in the series, they did a pretty great job of differentiating between the city districts and populating them with huge crowds.

On the other hand, the main story was a mess, aiming for a Les Miserables love story, except instead of two lovers kept separate by grand historical circumstance and endangered by a tragically failed revolution, you had two main leads who were kept apart by an ideological conflict between too organisations that neither the characters or the writers seemed interested in, set in a bizarrely royalist depiction of the French Revolution.

Odyssey making your gear specialise in either assassination, combat, or archery was probably one of its biggest misteps. Why force me to either focus on one exclusively at the expense of the other two? It's not like it had party mechanics so you could make up for your weaknesses, and neither of the three styles were compelling enough that you wouldn't want to switch between them occasionally for variety. It didn't even function like proper specialisation; if I remember correctly you could switch sets at any time, even in combat, so it's not like you were under any pressure to plan ahead with your build.

If you wanted your headshots and backstabs to be OHKs while still fighting decently in combat, you ended up getting forced to run at least three different gear sets that on console at least were relatively clunky to switch between.

Origins system of just letting you dump a bunch of resources in your hidden blade and forget about it was definitely a better system, but even then it led to annoyance because enemy HP would occasionally outstrip your damage, essentially closing off the entire stealth play style until you either got more skill points or upgrade resources.

Finished up the last hour of origins after leaving it for a couple of years, and I can't say I feel like I missed much. It's kind of impressive that the game manages to make both a trip to Rome and Caesar's assassination feel a bit underwhelming, but they pull it off.

The final cut scene with Bayek and Aya put a lot of emphasis on them establishing an (assassins) creed, but they don't really specify what it is or what it means other then be vaguely good and kill vaguely bad people, so it felt hard to get overexcited about it.

This might just be the result of coming back after a long period of time though.

I just cracked on through the last quarter of syndicate after leaving it for a couple of years and I gotta say it was properly weak. Not only does the conflict between the Fyre twins get wrapped up in around two seconds, but the final setpeices were a ball at a mostly deserted Buckingham palace including an awkard cameo with queen Victoria that manages to be less visually impressive than the ball at the start of Unity. This underwhelming start followed by the series 4th (5th?) boss fight against a templar mildly powered up by isu tech in an underground tomb that awkwardly uses the same mechanics as the rest of the game.

Syndicate really feels like one of the weaker entries in the series; it really indulges in the whole meet historical figures part of the series without really commiting to have them be proper characters, with a lot of them popping up for a mission or two then fading into the background again. Its also uninterested in Gangs of New York stylings it drapes itself in; theres a whole bunch of game systems connected to your gang but they don't really have much characterisation, you never do that many exciting crimes (that I remember), and by the end of the game I'm not really sure why they needed to form a gang in the first place.

On top of that the combat feels like a big step down from what they were at least attempting to do in Unity, with it being more in line with Black Flag where theres not much too it outside of spamming attack and occasionally countering.

I dunno if I like the new direction the games took since Syndicate as much as some people, but playing it does illustrate quite well why the series needed a serious shake up.

(Also it feels like they were trying to have their cake and eat it with queer representation by stating that Jacob was bi after release while not really having that shown in the text, although I might be forgetting scenes from the earlier part of the game.)

Vagabong

the 3 minute demo looked pretty good, it does seem like they're trying to break up the traditional loop of assassins creed, and the addition of dimemerment and execution animations looked like they added some weight to the combat that was previously lacking.

However, I'm not sure I rate Evior's voice acting, and the fact that the game map might be even bigger than odysseys is worrying. Once things get that big, content can start getting a bit spread thing; reused assets mean that a lot of the enviroments that your going to be doing stealth and combat in can get repetitive, and it gets harder to distinguish the 50th village from the 49th. Odyssey had a ton of towns and villages that didn't really have much personality or unique content to flesh them out compared to each other.

I feel like doing this at this point would probably be of great benefit to the series as a whole. They've already had two games where they want to commit to it, but they have to soften the punch by connecting the cool mythological stuff with their shite ancient aliens plotline that clearly isn't going anywhere.

Its pretty obvious that Valhalla is going to indulge in Nordic, British and probably Roman paganism, but the entire mystique will be undermined due to it not actually being Woden, the one eyed god of wisdom, but instead some Isu computer that's fooling the locals to drive some insipid meta-plot that goes nowhere.

I think I remember people saying AC2's choice of the renaissance was a bit more of an obscure pick at the time, but that might of been in the context of a video games market that at the time was almost exclusively vaguley medieval or ww2 focused.

I always reckoned the reason why Odyssey's ship combat felt weak was a framing thing. Blasting a massive Spanish galleon with a full broadside, watching it being reduced the sawdust and flames while smoke billows all around you is always going to feel better than shooting some arrows at a slightly larger trireme.

Also it's been a long time since I played it, but if I remember right the assassin woman that Desmond murders in I think either Brotherhood or Revelations as the big "woah what happens next in this modern world framing device we're certain our fans care about!?!" cliffhanger, in the next game it goes completely unremarked upon until like halfway through the game somebody casually mentions she was an undercover templar agent or something and then they just never bring her up again?

I heard the reveal was in a spin off book or comic or dlc, which is nuts seeing as she was the secondary lead for the modern plot.

On the broader Templar/Assassin conflict its doomed to be forever weak as hell, both because the games will never dig into the reasons for the conflict beyond some vague dichotomy between Order and Freedom, and because it will never be fully resolved; every victory is essentially meaningless when you know both groups still need to exist and be fighting in the modern day.

I honestly hope they get rid of the framing device and commit fully to the series being cool historical open world malarky. The need for every game's antagonist to be at the head of a large secret society is probably why they're so often unconvincing; it puts some weird limitations on who they can be and what they're motivations are.

Afterwards he has no reason to care beyond the fact that some of his buddies are assassins. The game's weird moralising about how Edward should care more about the struggle between what are, to him, two weird cults in an arbitrary conflict, than about bettering his station in life is probably the weaker parts of the plot.

This gets even weirder when there's a much more emotionally resonant reason to act as the impetus for Edwards developing sense of responsibility: the fact that he abandoned his pregnant wife to go have pirate adventures. I think she ended up dying offscreen, but i don't think that had a huge effect on the plot.

(Also while looking up Edward's wife on the wiki I found out that her cruel father was a Templar, ensuring that literally every character in the series has some familial connection to the ancient conspiracy that runs the world.)

I feel like AssCreed multiplayer has been pretty good when it's about, outside of dodgy balancing, netcode, and progression systems. The core idea; of attempting to blend in with npcs while hunting another player doing the same was pretty great, and pulling off incredibly high point kills was pretty drat satisfying. The biggest weakness was that it needed equal buy-in from everyone, so getting stuck with a target who was running all over the place could be pretty annoying.

Vagabong

I'm broadly ambivalent about the switch to rpg mechanics, by Syndicate it was prettry clear that the old stuff was on its last legs (especially after they walked back the changes in Unity) and clearly needed a big change.

Assassinations and headshots not being kills are probably the biggest problems with the new system. It just feels awful to sneak up behind someone or pull of a skillful shot and have it not pay off, and I can't think of any other game that does it where 'headshot' isn't a skill on cooldown.

Vagabong

Unlike a lot of RPGs Odyssey is pretty thin on the ground in terms of replayability or party mechanics, so separating different playstyles behind builds is this weird halfmeasure where there's no real meaningful build choices and you can be good at everything, it just involves the busy work of managing 3 separate inventories and switching between them.

Limitations can force you into interesting gameplay when there's enough depth to encourage you to innovate, or if the mechanics are compelling enough on their own, but lacking that it can be frustrating. It's why the 2 gun system works well enough in Call of Duty multiplayer, where you have to consider the map and your opponents weapons, and feels like an annoying rule in the single player.

I don't think this holds true for everyone, but I don't think any single part of Odyssey's Assassin/Warrior/Hunter trifecta stands well enough on its own to be stuck too for a large portion of a very long game.

the "speak english but with a dodgy accent" thing kind of worked in Origins and Odyssey because they all had fun, sing-songy voices. But here it's like every single character is doing the same monotonous, gruff ~viking voice~

oh well

The Dane's seem to be having a bit of fun, I'm not looking forward to the Anglo-Saxon voice acting, especially if its just the normal limited range of video game English accents where the only options are posh or Wurzels drop out. With the different kingdoms they could of really commited to regional accents, had everyone from Mercia sound like a brummie, but I doubt it.
