May 23, 2011

Battle at Storm's End.
Martell plays:
[2] Darkstar: 1 Sword
Baratheon plays:
[2] Brienne of Tarth: 1 Sword, 1 Fortification
Final combat strength 8 vs. 6. Martell victory. Baratheon retreats to King's Landing.
No Marches remaining. There is one single Consolidate Power order on the board, at Dornish Marches, so Tyrell gains 2 power tokens.

Turn 7 begins
Westeros cards:
Resupply
Dark Wings, Dark Words - The holder of the Messenger Raven holder chooses: gain power, bid on tracks, or no effect (wildling threat increases to 8)
A Storm at Sea - No raid orders may be played this round (wildling threat increases to 10)

New supply counts:
Greyjoy - 5
Baratheon - 5
Lannister - 3
Tyrell - 3
Stark - 2
Martell - 2

Baratheon chooses to have everyone gain power. Power token totals:
Tyrell 5 + 2 -> 7
Greyjoy 1 + 4 -> 5
Baratheon 0 + 3 -> 3
Lannister 1 + 1 -> 2
Martell 0 + 2 -> 2
Stark 0 + 1 -> 1

Planning phase begins

Stark to play.

keep yr head up, problem girl

Game. Greyjoy takes White Harbor and wins.

Greyjoy is at 6 castles. Tyrell cannot interfere with any of my critical forces in a meaningful way. (Attacking Sunset Sea does not influence my attack on White Harbor or deny any of my current castles.) So let's look at all of Stark's options. For these calculations, I'm assuming Stark plays either Eddard Stark or Roose Bolton. None of Stark's other house cards have any advantage over playing Roose here.

1) Stark declines the march. Greyjoy attacks from Winterfell 4v4.
  • Greyjoy plays Balon. Stark play doesn't matter. 6v4, Greyjoy takes castle.

2) Stark attacks Winterfell with Footman. Strength is 2v5.
  • Greyjoy plays Asha, Stark plays Eddard. 6v6, tie to Greyjoy, Stark Footman routed.
  • Counterattack is 4v3. Greyjoy plays Balon, Stark play doesn't matter. 6v3, Greyjoy takes the castle.

3) Stark attacks Winterfell with Knight. Strength is 3v5. Greyjoy plays Damphair.
  • If Stark plays Eddard, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Balon. 3v7, Stark Knight routed.
  • Greyjoy counterattack is 4v2. Greyjoy plays Asha, Stark plays Roose. 5v4, Greyjoy takes castle.
  • If Stark plays Roose, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Asha. 5v6, Stark Knight Knight routed.
  • Counterattack is 4v2. Greyjoy plays Balon, Stark play doesn't matter. 6v2, Greyjoy takes castle.

4) Stark attacks Winterfell with Knight+Footman. Strength is 4v5. Greyjoy plays Damphair
  • If Stark plays Eddard, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Balon. 4v7, Stark units routed.
  • Greyjoy counterattack is 4v1. Greyjoy plays Asha, Stark plays Roose. 5v3, Greyjoy takes castle.
  • If Stark plays Roose, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Asha. Strength is 6v6, Stark units routed.
  • Counterattack is 4v1, Greyjoy plays Balon, Stark play doesn't matter. Strength is 6v1, Greyjoy takes the Castle.

5) Stark attacks Moat Cailin with Footman. Strength is 3v5. Greyjoy plays Damphair.
  • If Stark plays Eddard, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Balon. 3v7, Stark Footman routed.
  • Greyjoy counterattack is 4v3. Greyjoy plays Asha, Stark plays Roose. 5v5, Greyjoy takes castle.
  • If Stark plays Roose, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Asha. 5v6, Stark Footman routed.
  • Counterattack is 4v3. Greyjoy plays Balon, Stark play doesn't matter. 6v3, Greyjoy takes castle.

6) Stark attacks Moat Cailin with Knight. Strength is 4v5. Greyjoy plays Damphair.
  • If Stark plays Eddard, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Balon. 4v7, Stark Knight routed.
  • Counterattack is 4v2. Greyjoy plays Asha, Stark plays Roose. 5v4, Greyjoy takes the castle.
  • If Stark plays Roose, Greyjoy uses Damphair to play Asha. 6v6, Stark Knight routed.
  • Counterattack is 4v2. Greyjoy plays Balon, Stark play doesn't matter. 6v2, Greyjoy takes the castle.

7) Stark attack Moat Cailin with Knight + Footman. Strength is 5v5.
  • Greyjoy plays Balon. Stark play doesn't matter. 5v7, Stark units routed.
  • Counterattack is 4v1. Greyjoy plays Asha, Stark plays Eddard. 5v5, Greyjoy takes the castle.

Feel free to check my math. I might've missed something somewhere in all my number flipping. But I think the results are airtight.

Good game.

I was strongly considering calling it before even revealing orders but I wasn't entirely confident that I had *all* the maths right. Congratulations to GutterOwl, and thank you everyone for playing. I can only hope that my various mistakes and omissions weren't too infuriating and you managed to have fun.

Maybe some more games will follow in the future. If that happens I'll make sure to post in the thread and Discord.

All hail your new Kraken overlords (and maybe figure out a way to go to the alternate universe where the Tyrells are in charge).

But at least with the Tyrells in charge, it's not fish soup every goddamned day for dinner.

The pinnacle of cloud computing.

I think it's gg, yes. I believe the only way for Stark to hold out was a defence+2 that could be doubled up against damphair. But then that is just postponing the end.

Post mortem for Martell: I gambled the game going so hard for Dragonstone. In my experience Baratheon has a very good position to get 7 castles, so I wanted to weaken them and steal that position. But my gamble failed hard when Mustering refused to come up and I had no spare units to do a special consolidate with. Baratheon being able to muster with a consolidate while I needed a Westeros mustering knocked me out. I'll definitely have to remember this lesson next time I play.
