I see what you guys were talking about with book 2 of memories of the fall, but I do find it mildly amusing that no xianxia novel can resist the allure of having at least one character craft a hyperbolic time chamber to meditate in. Which is I guess what all the ancient experts who aren't busy using the bones of the poor as toothpicks or some poo poo are doing

She is a 4th stage (threshold) of both green soul and bronze physique realms as of the sect tournament. (Actually, she hit full 4th stage in month 12 of her Inner Sect year). She was at the 1st stage of green and bronze at the end of Forge. So she has made 3 stage advances in both spiritual and physical cultivation over Threads so far.

There are 8 stages for third realm (separate tracks for both spirit and body). The stage names are: Early / Appraisal / Foundation / Threshold / Framing / Formation / Fortification / Completion.

As to other characters, CRX was at the 4th stage in month 11 and should be the same for BM. It is unclear whether CRX and BM advanced to 5th stage in the 2 months between the end of the ice lady expedition and the sect tournament. I would verge on probably since BM has previously thought in her sidestory that she was about to hit 5th stage soon.

Yeah, the main point is that Green/Bronze (the third level of soul/body) takes dramatically longer than the previous two levels. IIRC the previous two just had vague "early/middle/late" stages instead of the well defined 8 stages that Green/Bronze have.

In terms of norms for the setting, IIRC pretty much every cultivator can reach the peak of the second level (Yellow/Silver) given enough effort, but only talented people ever make it to Green/Bronze (and only the truly elite make it beyond that).

Is there even anyone in the Inner Sect who is beyond third realm? IIRC Liao Zhu, who is one of the highest rank Inner Sect members, is just in the late third realm.

IIRC Gu Yanmei (Xiulan's older sister) is the first ranked disciple and a fourth realm; Zhou's niece is also fourth realm but I don't recall if she's technically a disciple or just military and stays in the area due to it being on the border etc.

There's definitely been a lot played up about how dangerous breakthroughs get at that point - see the last SV update's example of what happens when you fail - so it's likely a long way off even if Ling Qi could attempt it sooner. (Meta-wise: if she reaches fourth realm before a certain age she gets another automatic noble title, and there's zero chance Yrsillar is going to let all the build-up to fief management get thrown away like that).

Woah, Last Ship in Suzhou finally got another chapter. There was another one last month too, but it's been more or less dead for ages. The author was sick or something. Hope it comes back for good. It's an experience lol. A xianxia that's uh, I dunno. Actually Daoist, you could say? It's also an isekai and seemingly every character constantly quotes Chinese literature.

There is a new chapter, and I'm enjoying it. But of course Tabitha just has to mention the super important story Worm, by Wildbow. And that takes me out of the future narrative because it is such a bad story.

Edit: Also they mention the store 'Electronics Boutique' and I have fond memories about that place... man the 90's were awesome.

Forgive me as I know this topic has been strip mined and detonated into space at this point, but Worm does have things that made it notable - though I agree with all the criticisms and have plenty of my own. It had neat ideas and a whole lot of them, and seemed to introduce a lot of people into the general format of web serials. To summarize what could easily be a rambling bit of nonsense, it had so many ideas about its world, about different powers, and bizarre situations that I still think about it probably once a week on average, almost a decade later. Not arguing for its place in a hall of fame, but I do think it might be a tad aggressive to call it bad. My opinion ain't worth poo poo though and I enjoy your posts so take a big 'ol handful of salt.

Entirely separate but I devoured Ar'Kendrithyst over the course of a week and change and it has torn my prior favorites ratings to pieces - it makes a lot of sense that the author has written novels before because the quality and plotting are there from the start. Every time something momentous happens, it feels like a natural extension of everything that has happened before in a way that I don't believe I've seen in a web serial so far. The depth of the systems in his world and especially how fully realized the conceit of magic and how it exists in our universe is incredibly robust. It is not perfect by any means but it's the first web serial I've read that has felt more like a proper work of fiction than a work where the quality is continuously improving from (for lack of a better term) an amateur author.

With the strong urge to reread I'm definitely going to write a proper review of AK once I've read it through again but I gotta say I'm just blown away by the work. I've been increasingly pacifistic as I've gotten older and it was very nice to have a protagonist really believe in peace, as somebody earlier mentioned. Specifically, not the kind of "I believe in peace" trope where somebody refuses to fight and ends up letting violence win, but somebody who recognizes violence is necessary and strives for a world in which it is not.

I don't think it's totally unrelated. Ar'Kenrithyst and Worm are both about power and how it shapes the world. Worm is just a misanthrope writing about an emotionally maladjusted trauma victim gaining and wielding power, while Ar'k is about an emotionally mature adult who really knows what they're about getting power.

Both have flaws. I like Ar'k better and think it's a much more interesting and complicated point of view. But they do kind of contrast in an interesting way.

Gu Yanmei was a 4th realm while the first ranked inner sect disciple, but in her case, she was being held back a bit because she's a high noble and the Sect is very reluctant to promote someone for higher resources when they can run off back home. (It was the same reason why the Sect was dragging on promoting Lin Hai from core sect to elder status until it became too embarrassing to have an indigo core sect disciple. At that point, the Sect just had to suck it up and promote him. Same with Gu Yanmei's situation.) In any case, it's very rare to have any fourth realm inner sect member, and they'd be promoted at the soonest possible opportunity if it did happen. Generally, they would even promote high greens.

Liao Zhu is rank 2 and high green.

Guan Zhou is core sect disciple.

The last time I sincerely posted about what I like about Worm, you just replied with lol. Not sure if you're making fun of me here.

The more I think about it the more I like comparing the two stories. Both have a preoccupation with creating a sense of verisimilitude in their worlds by way of connections and interactions between systems. Both have a lot of escalation of power level and stakes. Both have quite a bit of visceral violence and horror. (The mental monsters in Ar'k are so bad.) But the choice of protagonist makes such a huge difference. I think Ar'k would be pretty run of the mill if Jane was the main character.

I'm guessing that since Alfric takes this poo poo serious and is always carefully paying attention, Isra is probably good at tracking, and they have the helmet so they can jump up into the sky whenever they want, them being lost here means spatial dungeon fuckery.

Is anyone reading Cheep? I binged through it last week since I'm a sucker for inhuman / no longer human protagonists. It took a bit of a dark turn a few chapter back but then the author did a huge edit of 10+ chapters (included patreon only) to change the flavor of that whole event.

Cheep changes spoiler Originally, the paladin went right for the collar which was a permanent mind control thing so the adventurer group was rightly pissed. The MC was already depressed due to losing his family (again) and then lost his freewill so was understandably suicidal. They changed the whole encounter to lessen the danger of the collar, make the paladin's actions more understandable, and MC's suicidal thoughts to instead be due to overdose of the paralytic poison. Instead of the paladin being in the wrong, Skye is an overreactor in the edits and is now more of a spoiled brat that only cared about taming a legendary bird instead of being rightly pissed at the paladin's abuse towards a sapient individual.

I did like how the edits clarified some things but all the deep introspection from the characters and their responses seem overly dramatic now with how the traumatic event was toned down.

Someone in the RR comments suggested that the poison may be making them stupid. I hope it's that or some other unexpected problem. Otherwise they have lots of tools to quickly solve the "lost" problem. It's out of character for Alfric to have not marked the way out, helmet, left-hand rule becomes right-hand rule to back-track, Isra, etc, etc.

Outcast: It looks like Vul'to will probably end up being saved, but at some sort of cost (maybe he'll permanently be in the body of the soul eater guy). I was expecting him to be saved due to the soul doctor guy being there, but I assumed he'd somehow being able to stick him back in his own body (or use the Soul Clay). I'm happy that didn't happen because it would have been pretty lame.

My one minor gripe is that most of the characters in that story tend to be a bit too reasonable/kind. Almost everyone that isn't a direct antagonist tends to act with an almost unnatural degree of respect and empathy towards others, with the exception of moments that are clearly intended to highlight some sort of personality flaw or conflict (like when Keira dismembers those Fiend assassins).

The 'best' part is that shortly they're going to taper off into almost nothing. In fact it'll feel like time is loving frozen outside the shard. Which makes you wonder what the hell the point of introducing Blue Water Province in such detail was.

In the moment to moment story I still like it but I really have to wonder what the hell is happening, and if any of this is like, planned out on purpose.
