What actually transpires beneath the veil of an event horizon? Decent people shouldn't think too much about that.

"Have you ever gotten a hardon from logistical planning? Do you enjoy moving things from one point to another? Do steam trains stir intense feelings within you?"

Does the sight of lines on a chart make you feel warm and fuzzy inside?
(opener from the last thread, not made by me)

Then play OpenTTD!

OpenTTD is a business simulation game in which players try to earn money via transporting passengers and freight by road, rail, water and air. It is an open source[1] remake and expansion of the 1995 Chris Sawyer video game Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

OpenTTD duplicates most features of Transport Tycoon Deluxe and has many additions, including a range of map sizes, support for many languages, custom (user-made) artificial intelligence (AI), downloadable customisations, ports for several widely used operating systems, and a more user-friendly interface.

I created a server for us on an Amazon E2C instance (free for a year). Amazon sucks. It's now on a paid, hosted VPS. It should be more reliable than the server last time.

How do I get the game?
OpenTTD is completely free! You can download the game at http://www.openttd.org/

Once you download and install the game, you may have to install graphics, sound, and music packs separately. The process should be automatic, but if you need help, please post here.

Also, if you have a copy of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, you can use the original files instead of the open source replacement. See here for more details.

How do I learn to play?
The wiki and the in-game tutorial are both decent resources. Train signals can get a little tricky, but you'll get the hang of it with time. Signals in OpenTTD is actually lot better than the old TTD days where you need dummy stations, waypoints, and other shenanigans to get trains to work.

*****

Sample train line
This is a sample double-track railway line with path-based signals on the map for those who are new to the game. You can add any number of trains to it and they will not get stuck or collide.
Overview

Be sure to use one-way path-based signals for this type of railway line, unless you know what you're doing (e.g. non-drive-thru terminus stations [see nielsm's post quoted below] require regular, not one way, path based signals at platform exit).
Also, to automatically place signals every few blocks, hold down the "Ctrl" key, have the signal construction toolbar open, and click and drag on an existing signal in the direction in which you want to place more signals.

Station detail

*****

Below are some additional notes from the last thread. Some of this advice may be out of date. Namely, path-based signals (see above) render pre-signals largely obsolete.

(The following one is mostly obsolete. Just use path based signals).

(This is still good advice).

nielsm made a good example of a terminal station (after stairmaster crashed multiple trains due to bad signaling)

nielsm posted:

This one's for Stairmaster:

All signals are path signals. This is how I'd design a terminus station with approaches from two directions, so one direction prefers one set of tracks, and the other direction prefers different tracks, and they have less risk of interfering with each other when trains are entering/leaving from different directions at the same time.

More good examples from nielsm

nielsm posted:

For mynameisbatman/fridge:

At (1) there is a sharp bend, just one half-tile long. Trains have to slow down to pass that. It's better to flatten it out like this:

But best to alter the terrain like this:

To be exact, a bend can slow the train down, but an S-curve will not.

At (2), (3), and (4) there are potentially bad signals. The basic rule for path signals is: Do not place a signal if a train waiting at it could block a switch point. This is being violated here.
The general way to construct a ro-ro station with path signals has 3 sets of signals:

The entry signal is the last signal on the main line before the station area. The station area includes all switching that lets a train choose a platform, and all switching to lead it back onto the main line. The purpose of the entry signal is to protect the entry points until the train can get a path into its destination platform. There should never be signals between the entry signal on the main line and the end of the platform.
The platform exit signals are placed exactly at the exit end of each platform. Their purpose is to mark end end of a pathway into the station, and prevent trains from leaving the station without reserving a path through the exit points onto the main line. It can be an advantage to have some extra acceleration room before the track leaving the platform merges with any other tracks, but the platform exit signal should still be as early as possible after the platform, to let the next train in faster.
The station exit signal marks the end of the station area. It's placed on the main line leaving the station, sufficiently far onto the line that a train that ends up waiting at it don't block any other exits from the station onto other lines that may leave in different directions.

Note all these are the same physical type of signal, all of them here are one-way path signals. It's only their logical purpose I'm naming here.

Silento Boborachi posted:

Wow, come back on after I build a big network yesterday only to find all the industries supplying them are just gone, factories are gone, inputs gone. I think my trains got jammed, did that really ruin the industries that badly when goods didn't get delivered?

E: solved it (kinda) by blowing about 200 mil on funding new industries and prospecting

In the default game, primary industries may slowly decrease in production and close if output isn't picked up quickly enough, and secondary industries may close suddenly if they aren't being supplied. (FIRS does away with those mechanics so that's why some people really like it).

If you mix primary output and secondary output trains on the same track (for example, oil trains and goods trains on the same track, and especially if they pick up and drop off at the same station), it's easy for trains to deadlock unless all stations have enough platforms for all trains. Either separate the trains onto different tracks, or at least have separate pickup and drop off stations, with the pickup stations big enough to fit all the trains picking up (i.e. 16 track goods station for oil refinery output if you have 16 goods trains with full-load orders).

Hey everyone, thanks to all those who tried the last game. I've reset the map with the following changes:

Gameplay Settings
* Arctic Map
* Game now pauses if no one is on the server
* Changed all running costs to low (to prevent bankruptcy once vehicles get old and running costs increase)
Also, I think there's an individual setting you can turn on to auto-renew vehicles every so often (the vehicles will find a depot a few months before they get too old and the depot will buy an identical replacement).

NewGRFs (mods)
* av8 Aviators Aircraft vehicle set
* 2cc Trains vehicle set
* 2cc Buses vehicle set
* Hover Vehicles (bus and trucks)
* Long Vehicles (trucks)
* Vacuum Tube Trains and Wagons
* FISH 2 (new ships)
* Industrial Stations Renewal (more graphics options when building stations, does not change gameplay)
* Total Town Replacement Set (different town buildings, does not change gameplay)

OpenTTD should be able to automatically download all these NewGRFs for you when you connect to the server. Use the "find missing content online" feature. Again, please let me know if you have any comments or problems. Thanks for playing!

I stole the idea from another goon some time back.
Also, everyone who doesn't connect all their rail together into one network is failing miserably at proper train sperging.

Too bad I can't give you some extra startup cash, at only slightly punitive interest.

What's up with the truck models in the game? I've got the Volvo FH16 which is awesome but the two later models can't haul coal, gold or wheat for some unknown reason and the last one even has significantly lower horsepower so they're way too weak to be useful despite their higher top speed (which I doubt they'll ever be able to reach). Any year the good truck is going to disappear from the list and only worthless junk I can't even use will be left. Grumble grumble grumble.

There's no way to enable expired vehicles in a multiplayer game, so the map's been reset.

Current settings and changes:
  • Tropical
  • 1024 x 1024
  • 2cc train set vehicle purchase and running costs have been set to 25% of default.
  • There's no way to change Av8 airplane set costs unfortunately.
  • Road vehicle set has been changed to eGRVTS, which provides for trams Trams TRAMS, articulating trucks, and vehicles that last all the way to the end of the game (2130).
  • Additional passenger station graphics packs

Also, I'm going save before resetting each time. I'll host the saved games somewhere.

planes are already OP as hell 1/1 just takes them up to the point where there's no reason to use anything else. that said 2/1 has always felt reasonable to me since it basically makes the overland speed of the best maglevs and the best trains about equal.

Fun times! Here's some of my screenshots from the last game:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hdhs7u9aa...20in%202049.png

I set up some steam trains early on (GWR 16xx Pannier tanks, for the curious), and then when I came back they were still chugging along - although by the time I got back, I couldn't build steam any more. I love steam trains, so I kept them going until the end.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/twr9i1zhc...per%20chain.png

I'd made about 7m by that point, and after Stairmaster generously gave me an extra 5m I decided to do something a bit crazier with a big ol wood --> paper --> goods chain using electric locos. Here it is zoomed all the way out. Note the good ol' OpenTTD logic of shipping the paper a long way away to the printing works, and then shipping the finished goods back to a large town near the paper mill . I also ran some passengers along the same network because hey, why not.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ojfd0ngi...tion%202049.png

The Spaghetti Junction at the heart of this network, complete with some labels.

For a future game, since I'm a steam nut it'd be interesting to see an earlier start - either go Original Transport Tycoon and have a 1930 start with the original vehicles, maybe, or even go crazy and back to 1900 or 1870 with either 2cc or something like the UK Railway Set.

I hate all these train engines. There are hundreds of them, the differences in stats are negligible, the vast majority are bad, it seems that often they have special wagons which are the only wagons you can put on them and almost none of them can actually carry any cargo. Also the monorail is 100% useless when it's trying so hard to be metro, how does that even work?

nielsm
Jun 1, 2009

Fallen Rib

There are settings for the 2cc train set to disable locomotives from various geographies. If we're still using it for the next game, I'll also vote for limiting that to two or three geographies.
There is also a GRF that replaces the monorail graphics with 3rd rail electrified metro track, which you're really supposed to use with 2cc.

Yeah, that would look better. But they have a speed that's barely faster than a loaded truck and you can't build stations or turns underground so it's just a much slower train. If you want a slower and probably cheaper train service you can just buy a lovely locomotive instead. I don't get what purpose it fills.
