The Borderlands, the most unenviable stretch of land in the Old World, with the possible exception of the Orc-infested Badlands (but even then, it can be hard to tell the difference sometimes). Full of shrublands and rocky wastelands, the undead and the greenskins, and worst of all, the Border Princes. A bunch of jumped-up bandits claiming to be lords and squabbling amongst themselves over the control of run-down villages. While there are those who choose to pass through these lands on the way to the Empire or to the various dwarf holds, no one would ever willingly choose to stay in this wretched backwater. Unfortunately, you no longer have a choice. Two months ago, you heard that some minor noble, Wolfram von Houten, was looking to hire some escorts for a trip into the Border Princes. He refused to say what exactly you would be looking for, but there were rumors that it would involve a ruin or tomb of some sort. You accepted the job, as did almost sixty others of various backgrounds and professions, and the lot of you set out into the Borderlands. Things went bad almost immediately. Strange goblins riding spiders attacked you the moment you left the mountain pass, managing to kill the mercenary captain who was supposed to keep your group organized, and you spent the next week or so fleeing deeper into the Borderlands. Whether due to poison arrows from the goblins, accidentally running into a troll, being isolated and picked off by bandits, or just simply dying to starvation or dehydration, only a handful of your company still remains. You've long lost track of whatever happened to Wolfram, which is doubly unfortunate since he was the one both holding on to your pay and had the only map on his person. So now you're stuck in this gods-forsaken land. The only good news is that you did finally reach a part of the Borderlands that's actually inhabited by people. And while the Border Princes have an inflated view of themselves and are constantly fighting and backstabbing each other, that also means there's plenty of work for unemployed mercenaries such as yourself. And maybe, just maybe, you can find a way out of this hellhole. I'm going to run a game of WFRP 2nd edition set in the Border Princes, taking a lot of influence from the game Battle Brothers. I'm intending this game to be a bit more laid-back than normal, so don't expect any story arcs or grand campaigns. Everything you do in this region of the Borderlands will probably have zero effect on the world at large. It also means you shouldn't be intimidated if you've never played WFRP before. Everyone will start the game with their first career completed, and will get six (6) free advances for their second career (ignore the xp cost of entering a new career). I'm fine with people choosing their careers, so if you ever wanted to try out the magic or divine lores rules, here's your chance. Otherwise, tell me which race you want to be (Human, Halfling, Dwarf, or Elf) and I'll roll up two basic careers from the Career Compendium for you to pick from. It's probably not a good idea to let me randomly determine your second career, but if you really want to let the dice decide, you need to pick one of the two careers I rolled for you first. For stats, roll and assign the results however you want, and change the lowest roll to an 11 (assuming one of your rolls was less than 11, anyways). You get all of the trappings from both your first and second careers, but remember that you need to spend advances to obtain skills and talents from your second career. If you have any questions or if you find any of this confusing, just ask in the thread for help. Also, I have one question for your character: why were you so desperate that you signed on with the rest of these idiots? This is mostly to make sure you guys have a reason to not immediately ditch each other. Recruitment will be up for at least a week, and I'll be taking 5-6 players. Questions can either be asked in this thread or in #acolyte on synIRC. You can also pm me, if for some reason you don't want to ask your question in front of others. (No, you cannot be a skaven, although maybe I'll run a skaven game some other day) And I'll steal this bit from Dyne's thread: quote:QUICK AND DIRTY CHARACTER CREATION RIGHT HERE Completed Characters: Youviel, Elf Scout by Tricky Lorandara, Elf Charlatan by frankenfreak William Gayshire, Elf Forger by sullat Eldillor, Elf Verenean Investigator by JackMann Ivo Grov, Human Shieldbreaker by JackMann Sir Guy d'Urvaine, Human Knight of the Realm by Mors Rattus Alfonso Morales de Aguilar, Human Sergeant by Dachshundofdoom Elise Sterne, Human Veteran by thatbastardken Margot, Human Explorer by grassy gnoll Roland Mohr, Human Journeyman Wizard by John Dyne Mariano Manzanedo del Diamenterra, Human Bodyguard by Redeye Flight Hallan Halestrom, Halfling Muleskinner by Quornes Edgard Viktot, Halfling Vampire Hunter by professor_curly Cuthbert, Halfling Priest by MaliciousOnion Donrod Brightgrip, Dwarf Journeyman Runesmith by wiegieman Mordok, Dwarf Veteran by Werewhale Characters in Progress: Dwarf Slave by chin up everything sucks Astus fucked around with this message at 02:00 on Sep 9, 2017 |

chin up everything sucks: Your name is very appropriate, because you are a Dwarf Slave. Perhaps the only one who's had it worse than the idiots who live in the Borderlands. But for your second career, somehow you've managed to not only free yourself, but also became a Shieldbreaker. You're still learning this whole "Stand up and fight" thing, but you've certainly came prepared for combat. frankenfreak: Your elf started out as either a Thief or an Entertainer. As a Thief, you probably thought it'd be easy to just rob your employer and make your escape, or perhaps you were hired because your skillset would be useful in robbing a tomb. As an entertainer, I guess maybe Wolfram just liked elven music? Or maybe your music career hasn't been doing too well lately, and it was time for a change in profession? JackMann: You started out as a Human Smuggler or Raconteur. Likely used to travelling, you've either been slinking in the shadows or walking brazenly in the open, either for money or just to learn a good story. Jo Joestar: Your Human was either a Thug or Boatman. The skills you learned as a Thug could be put to good use in surviving out in the Borderlands, while there is no body of water large enough to justify a boat anywhere close to nearby. Why did you even think a Boatman was needed here? Wait, did you actually bring your row boat with you? How? Why?! Astus fucked around with this message at 00:06 on Sep 2, 2017 |

Whether you're on a quest or you got exiled, there's plenty of reason why your knight ended up here of all places.

8one6: You start out as either an Elf Envoy or Scribe. You probably didn't think you'd be involved in the fighting, and instead were hoping to make a deal with Wolfram on whatever it was he was looking for, or to study the tomb before the rest of these idiots tore it apart. And now you're isolated from the civilized world, and a writing kit probably isn't going to cut it. Tricky: Your elf was either a Hunter or another Envoy. A Hunter would definitely have been useful to the company, being able to both shoot enemies from a distance (good job with those goblins) and keep the others from starving to death (Whoops). Or you could be an Envoy, in which case read the above entry. Edit: And to be clear, because it's been asked: There is no mechanical benefit to me rolling your career. You can either pick or roll your own career, if you want to. Astus fucked around with this message at 00:24 on Sep 2, 2017 |

Yuviel, Elven Scout Yuviel is no stranger to strange, inhospitable terrain. A devotee of Kurnous, she's dedicated her life to the mastery of the hunt. Game, yes, and the less savory sorts that haunt the Reikwald. It was on a hunt for the latter that Yuviel crossed paths with Wolfram. His escort had fallen afoul of an ambush by bandits — a few trees dropped along the main road had boxed in his carriage — and it was only through her timely intervention that Wolfram escaped with his life. He knew, then, that he needed to have her bow at his side when he launched his expedition and, to that end, hatched a plot. Pride and elves are synonymous, of course, and Yuviel is hardly an exception to that. As the survivors regrouped, Wolfram invited Yuviel to share their fire that night. She accepted, if reluctantly, and the plot proceeded. Wolfram regaled her with many stories — and fine Bretonian spirits — and, eventually, they played several hands of cards. It's no easy trick to cheat an elf. Wolfram, though, he was quicker with his hands than most. Sharper than he looked, as well. Yuviel's senses were dulled by the potables and, despite several close calls, soon owed Wolfram more than she could pay. He offered her a chance. One last hand of cards. If she won, she'd have it all back and more besides. If he won, she'd join his guard for a season — and her debts would be cleared. Fate was not on her side. She was bound by her word. Yuviel, as promised, joined him on the remainder of the journey to his lands. Along the way he filled her in on his coming trip to the Borderlands. It was madness. He'd barely survived the Reikwald and was already champing at the bit to see himself into a land far more inhospitable. Yet, madness or no, her word had been given. Of course it all went to hell. How could it not? That leaves the question, of course. Why doesn't Yuviel leave the rest of this sorry band to die when it seems Wolfram has already fallen? Easy. She swore to see Wolfram and the rest of the group to the Border Princes and back. She hasn't seen a body yet and he may yet live. If she were to forgo her word, it would be to admit that she could not see it through. Beyond the risk of obsession taking hold in the root of her being, it would be an affront to the same pride that saw her into this mess. pre:Name: Yuviel Race: Elf Career: Hunter -> Scout Height: 6' 2" Weight: 105 Hair: Silver Eyes: Dark Brown Age: 30 Siblings: 2 Starsign: The Bonesaw Birthplace: Reikwald Forest Primary : | WS | BS | S | T | AG | INT | WP | FEL| Starting : | 31 | 53 | 31 | 35 | 52 | 30 | 35 | 27 | Advances : | 20 | 20 | 10 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 15 | 00 | Taken : | 00 | 20 | 00 | 05 | 15 | 05 | 00 | 00 | Current : | 31 | 73 | 31 | 40 | 67 | 35 | 35 | 27 | Secondary : | A | W | SB | TB | M | MAG | IP | FP | Starting : | 1 | 10 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Advances : | 1 | 6 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Taken : | 1 | 3 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Current : | 2 | 13 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Skills: Common Knowledge (Elves) Speak Language (Eltharin) Speak Language (Reikspiel) Concealment Follow Trail Outdoor Survival Perception +10% Search Secret Signs (Ranger) Silent Move Dodge Blow Talents: Specialist Weapon Group (Longbow) Coolheaded Excellent Vision Night Vision Hardy Lightning Reflexes Marksman Rapid Reload Mighty Shot Trappings: Longbow (10 arrows) 2 Animal Traps Antitoxin Kit Medium Armour (Mail Shirt and Leather Jack) Shield 10 Yards of Rope Horse with Saddle and Harness common clothing consisting of a shirt, breeches, and worn boots a tattered cloak a dagger tucked in a boot or belt a sling bag or a backpack containing a blanket a wooden tankard a wooden cutlery set a hand weapon (axe, club, sword, etc.) a purse holding 17 Gold Crowns (gc) Advances: Attacks +1 Mighty Shot BS +5% Dodge Blow Perception +10% Agi +5% Starting Wounds, Starting Fate: 2#1d10 2 4 Starting GC: 2d10 17 Tricky fucked around with this message at 07:17 on Sep 4, 2017 |

Ivo Grob has never been good for much. He's never excelled, nor shown any sign of genius. On the other hand, he has always been able to be at least slightly capable at anything he puts his hand to. His father hadn't much use for a son he considered lazy and shiftless, so when a trader passed through, the elder Grob offered to let the boy help haul things for the man in exchange for a discount on radishes. Ivo went with the trader from Ostland to Hochland, where he signed on with another trader going to Middenland, and finally bought his own cart and started to smuggle wines and cheeses out of Bretonnia, and then whatever he could get his hands on. He was decent enough at it, until he was caught at Karaz Norn with illicit keg of Bugman's. The dwarves didn't think much of his excuses or weak attempts at glib talk. He was given a choice of hard labor in the mines or defending the mountain as a shieldbreaker. Shieldbreaker would get him done sooner, so the choice was easy enough. He managed to survive by keeping his head down and sticking with his fellows. He was never cowardly, but nor was he particularly brave. He did his service and was mustered out. The dwarves made it clear that he was not welcome anywhere near their hold again, with or without smuggled ale. As he was leaving, he heard about an expedition heading to the Border Princes. It would get him a goodly distance from the dwarves, he thought, and he was sure he could do well enough on an expedition to get by. After all, how hard could it be? pre:Name: Ivo Grob Race: Human Career: Shieldbreaker Height: 5'6 Weight: 140 lbs Hair: Yellow Eyes: Black Distinguishing Mark: Missing Nail Age: 20 Siblings: 4 Starsign: Grungni's Baldric Birthplace: Ostland, Pig Farm Primary : | WS | BS | S | T | AG | INT | WP | FEL| Starting : | 31 | 30 | 32 | 33 | 33 | 27 | 36 | 24 | Advances : | 10 | 00 | 05 | 05 | 10 | 00 | 05 | 00 | Taken : | 10 | 05 | 05 | 05 | 10 | 10 | 00 | 10 | Current : | 41 | 35 | 37 | 38 | 43 | 37 | 36 | 34 | Secondary : | A | W | SB | TB | M | MAG | IP | FP | Starting : | 1 | 12 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Advances : | 1 | 2 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Taken : | 1 | 2 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Current : | 2 | 14 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Skills: Common Knowledge (The Empire) Dodge Blow Drive Evaluate Gossip Haggle Perception Row Search Silent Move Speak Language (Breton) Speak Language (Reikspiel) Swim Talents: Cool-headed Dealmaker Hardy Strike Mighty Blow Trappings: Axe Backpack with Blanket Common Clothing Crossbow With 10 Bolts Dagger Draft Horse and Cart Grappling Hook Medium Armor (Mail Coat, Leather Jack, Leather Leggings) Rope (10 Yards) Shield Tattered Cloak Torches (2) Water Skin Wooden Cutlery Set Wooden Tankard 11 gc 11 Wounds, 3 Fate Starting Talents: Hardy and Coolheaded 11 Gold Advances: Attacks Weapon Skill Strength Dodge Blow Strike Mighty Blow Toughness JackMann fucked around with this message at 07:01 on Sep 2, 2017 |

Astus posted:But if you really want natural weapons, I'll let you spend two advances to gain it, without having to be a slave. Does that seem fair? or ? Lorandara a.k.a. Elven Outlaw Princess Vivandrel and various other aliases Lorandara was born to a family of entertainers while they were wintering in Altdorf. For the first years, she grew up at her grandmother's place before her parents took her on tour with their troupe. Little Lorandara started acting in plays to entertain other children, then learned some acrobatics as she grew older. She developed a surprising amount of muscle and her father saw an opportunity and told her to train with the carnival wrestlers of his troupe. Donning a mask and billing herself as the "Elven Outlaw Princess Vivandrel" with a colorful backstory of being chased out of her homeland over a tragic love affair, she quickly became an attraction in whichever city or town of the Empire the circus went to. She had a lot of fun entertaining the crowds, enjoyed the fighting and the fact that she could remove the mask and go almost unrecognized when she wanted. Most importantly, she made good money. Not as much as she could have, though. She found out that she could have made even more if her parents hadn't shortchanged her. A furious scuffle ensued and Lorandara left the family circus behind. Setting out on her own, she would be a guest star at various other carnivals and often enjoy the favor of wealthy admirers. She quickly realized that there was even more money to made off those by charming them or scamming them with various tinctures promising strength and health. She even developed additional (unmasked) personae to scam money off people who weren't into her Elven Outlaw Princess act. Things went well for a while until she recently was attacked by a band of thugs in a dark alley at night who seemed more intent on breaking her legs than robbing her. After fighting some of them off, she cowed and bribed the rest. She found out her own father had paid them off to take Lorandara out of business. A plan to leave the Empire started forming. She had heard of people wrestling bears for entertainment in Kislev and thought of visiting Estalia. Then Wolfram von Houten entered the scene. Having previously been acquaitanced to him as one of her wealthy fans, he told her she would make a great addition to this grand expedition he had planned. At first she was sceptial about going into the Borderlands, but after learning about the size of the endeavour, she thought there was enough strength in numbers to make it a success and the money would be good. If nothing else, she'd get out of the Empire and away from whatever her rear end in a top hat father would send after her next. Well, things certainly didn't go as well as she had hoped. Lorandara is a headstrong woman who's guided mainly by money, drifting and grifting, mooching and scamming, slipping in and out of her various aliases as needed. (She hasn't slipped out of the Outlaw Elven Princess persona or taken her mask off since the expedition started, though.) If things go south or someone annoys her she knows how get rid of anyone confronting her. Her biggest weakness is that she's been unable to trust anyone to have her back, but the events of the expedition have taught her that she needs to get to learning that. pre:Name: Lorandara Race: Elf Career: Charlatan (Ex-Entertainer) Height: 5'9" Weight: 130 lbs. Sir Guy d'Urvaine, Knight of the Realm Sir Guy is the shining beacon of hope for the border! Or, at least, that's the story his people tell, few as they are. The d'Urvaine family has been in some disgrace since the fall of their last castle, but Guy has shown that he is not the failure of a warrior his father was. He excelled in the service of Carcassone and Duke Huebald, and he spent his errantry clearing out goblin and orc nests on the southern border. It is this that brought him in contact with the company. He maintains a firm stance: he is not a member, and he does not hire mercenaries. In the great tradition of Carcassone, they are shepherds. They have a sheep. And they are his shepherds. His sense of nobility and honor are genuine - Guy is Bretonnian through and through, even if he's of more practical Carcassone stock. He believes strongly in honor, justice and loyalty. He has been given the task of taming the local area and making it a proper part of Carcassone - and he intends to. That some other foolish nobles among the Border Princes might theoretically claim the land is meaningless - it is Carcassone land, according to century-old maps and the traditions of the d'Urvaine family. His dashing cheer and good looks make him popular enough among the local peasants, along with his tendency to not ask them anything complicated about what they're actually doing. Stats. mcclay: You are an Elf Marine. This region of the Border Princes is completely landlocked, there are no boats for you to guard. Except the Boatman's row boat, if Jo Joestar decides to take that career. You can be boat buddies. grassy gnoll: Your human starts as either a Cartographer or Embalmer. As a Cartographer, you probably have an intense hatred of the Borderlands, because no Principality ever lasts long enough to justify the ink used to mark their insignificant territory on the map. As an Embalmer...I guess Wolfram already knew there was a good chance for him to die horribly? Or perhaps you're the closest he could get to hiring an apothecary. ...or maybe you know more about the undead than you really should.

Dachshundofdoom: Your Human was either a Chimneysweep or a Mercenary. Now I'm not saying you can't make your own choice, but I do need to mention: One of these careers is more suited for a mercenary company game, and the other sweeps chimneys. Then again, maybe you want to go Chimneysweep>Rat Catcher to get your own dog. NutritiousSnack: Your Dwarf was either an Initiate or another Smuggler. I'll be honest, I don't know how Dwarf Priests work in the rules, but it doesn't seem like you get a skill or talent from any of the big three dwarfen ancestors. Smugglers, however, are much easier to understand.

Alfonso Morales de Aguilar Mi madre, Morr rest her soul, always said I would end up this way if I joined one of the mercenary companies. But I was a headstrong young man, certain of his own invincibility, and so off I went with the first band of cutthroats to pass through our little fishing village on their way to the Empire. They're all dead now. This my fourth mercenary company. Wait, fifth, technically. Or seventh... well, it depends on what you call a "mercenary company," but the point is that this is not my first time in a bad situation. It is my own fault. I should have listened to my gut. My gut never lies. Every time I got the feeling of approaching doom, I lit out. And every time, I was right. Greenskins overran the camp, or the camp well turned out to be poisoned, or beastmen attacked in the night. Every time, I got out just ahead of it. But I let my greed get the better of me again, and now I pay the price for my arrogance. A little expedition to some forgotten tomb in the middle of nowhere? For that kind of pay, I could buy many drinks and nights of comfort. And really, how could it go wrong, in spite of that familiar twist in my stomach? Qué idiota soy! But, ah, it's not so bad. There is still work to be had here. This sort of place is the mercenary's paradise. All I have to do is stay alive long enough to scrape together a way out. And this time, I will listen to my gut. pre:Name: Alfonso Morales de Aguilar Race: Human Career: Mercenary (Estalian)>Sergeant Character Profile Primary : | WS | BS | S | T | AG | INT | WP | FEL| Starting : | 34 | 34 | 35 | 32 | 37 | 31 | 33 | 31 | Advances : | 20 | 15 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 20 | Taken : | 15 | 10 | 05 | 05 | 05 | 00 | 05 | 05 | Gained : | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | -- | 05 | Current : | 49 | 44 | 40 | 37 | 42 | 31 | 38 | 41 | Secondary : | A | W | SB | TB | M | MAG | IP | FP | Starting : | 1 | 10 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Advances : | 1 | 04 | - | - | - | 0 | - | - | Taken : | 1 | 02 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Gained : | -- | -- | - | - | - | - | - | - | Current : | 2 | 12 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Skills: Animal Care Command Common Knowledge (The Empire, Estalia) Dodge Blow +10 Gossip Haggle Perception Ride Secret Language (Battle Tongue) Speak Language (Reikspiel, Estalian) Talents: Quick Draw Rapid Reload Sharpshooter Sixth Sense Suave Specialist Weapon (Parrying) Trappings: Main Gauche Shield Medium Armor (Full Mail) Hand Weapon (Longsword) Dagger Healing Draught Common Clothing + Cloak Backpack Blanket Wooden Tankard + Cutlery Gold Crowns (19) Career Exits: XP + Advances: +1 Attack +5 Fel +5 T +5 WS Command Dodge Blow +10 Wounds, Fate: 2#1d10 2 8 Random Talents: 82 68 GC: 2d10 19 Dachshundofdoom fucked around with this message at 06:23 on Sep 6, 2017 |

Wilbur Gayshire needs to come up with a lot of money. Do you know how expensive an elvish divorce is? There's the lawyer's fees, the court costs, alimony, not to mention paying back the dowry and all that money he'd borrowed from her family. And it's just not fair, after all, she was the one that got caught in bed with two other elves, a human and a halfling. So it seemed like a simple plan. They'd go into the desert, find some priceless artifacts, and then he'd make 4 or 5 more duplicate priceless artifacts to sell as well. But, ah, things have not gone as planned. Shot at by goblins, starving, chased by rabid hyenas... well. It still wasn't as bad as having to face his mother-in-law again. pre:Name: Wilbur Gayshire Race: Elf Career: Student -> Forger Height: 5' 7" Weight: 135 Hair: Copper Eyes: Black Age: 50 Siblings: 1 Starsign: The Two Bullocks Birthplace: Reikwald Forest Primary : | WS | BS | S | T | AG | INT | WP | FEL| Starting : | 27 | 41 | 26 | 29 | 44 | 39 | 38 | 31 | Advances : | 05 | 05 | 10 | 10 | 20 | 20 | 10 | 20 | Taken : | 00 | 05 | 00 | 00 | 20 | 10 | 05 | 10 | Current : | 27 | 46 | 26 | 29 | 64 | 49 | 43 | 41 | Secondary : | A | W | SB | TB | M | MAG | IP | FP | Starting : | 1 | 9 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Advances : | - | 3 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Taken : | - | 2 | - | - | - | - | - | - | Current : | 1 | 11 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Skills: Academic Knowledge (the Arts) Academic Knowledge (History) Common Knowledge (Elves) Consume Alcohol Heal Perception Read/Write Speak Language (Classical) Speak Language (Eltharin) Speak Language (Reikspiel) Trade (Artist) Trade (Calligrapher) Talents: Specialist Weapon Group (Longbow) Coolheaded Etiquette Flee! thatbastardken: Your Human was either an Apprentice Wizard or an Outrider. Since everyone starts out in their second career, going down the route of magic will let you actually cast spells from one of the winds of magic, rather than just the petty magic you'd normally start out with. On the other hand, Outrider can lead to a career that starts you with a gun. Magic, or gun? You decide.
