And even when I did eventually watch Sentai, I watched the seasons immediately after Gaoranger and they dealt with stuff like, "Red's been poisoned with a toxin and will die in 12 hours!" or even "Abarekiller is a psychopath who enjoys hurting people because he sees it as a game and he's got the cheat code" and I just can't see them, at least as Kyuranger is constructed, touching on topics such as these.

Stinger's brother committed genocide of their race just because he wanted to be more powerful, and he destroys Champ shortly after trying to kill Stinger (though Champ is a robot so they were able to rebuild him of course).

I'm not saying Kyuranger is gritty or serious or anything, it's not, but if your bar for grim and scary is "a person gets poisoned and will die" or "a villain likes hurting/killing people" then Kyuranger absolutely has that.

Delta's belt wasn't actually meant to be a cell phone, if I remember correctly it was a prototype Gear and so they had no need to try and disguise it like they did with the Faiz and Kaixa Gears, so it's just a gun.

e: Looking it up, the handle that's inserted to transform has an antenna, so it's possibly based on a walkie-talkie, and the barrel of the Delta Blaster is meant to be a camcorder.

I'm a lot more annoyed with Kyuranger, last week and this one felt like watching Ninninger all over again, with the only real difference being that Lucky's actor is far more charismatic than Takaharu's. At least next week is back to the good plot that I actually care about.

I don't agree that it's as bad as Ninninger. Sentai has been red-centric for a long time and Lucky has always played a role in supporting his other teammates so it wouldn't be surprising that when he's in trouble they're all going to talk about how they rely on him. This is a far cry from "Wow Takaharu is the best ever how will we ever be as good and awesome as him?" It does seem to be a shame that the powerup is going to be exclusive to him instead of being able to be shared around, but then again powerups that can be shared haven't happened very much since I started watching Sentai during Go-Onger (which didn't have a powerup form). The only ones I recall off the top of my head are Shinkenger and ToQger.

Eh I still can't agree. If anything the Lucky situation is much more comparable to Daigo from Kyoryuger than Ninninger, especially considering it was explicitly stated multiple times that Daigo was the strongest and best of everybody, it's just he treated his teammates like teammates, unlike Takaharu. And Lucky has consistently done the same thing throughout the series, with the slight exception of "I'm going to go back in time by myself to save everyone." But even then it was partially because "I need you guys to stay here and try to help Naga."

I was about to type that that seems pretty unlikely, but then as I was typing it it seems somewhat plausible I guess. I was going to say it was probably a direct swap between rocker guy and Katsuragi, which would mean he was dead, but someone else had to be there to kill "Katsuragi" meaning it could've been a three-way swap. The only problem I have with this theory is there'd be no real reason for rocker guy to join Faust.

I do agree that he's very likely a character we've seen before which is why they're still hiding his identity, and if nothing else this episode confirmed that the glasses guy who hangs out with Rogue isn't Stalk.

On another note I had to look it up, and I was right, Hoshi Minato from this week's Kyuranger is indeed Tsubasa from Magiranger/Jin from Go-Busters.

No, all of the Rider Eyecons were only used in either the Legendary! Rider Souls special or the Kamen Rider 1 movie, with Ex-Aid appearing, obviously, in Heisei Generations. In general, the previous Rider stuff will never appear in the series proper, with the obvious exception of Decade and the more unexpected exception of Wizard's last two episodes which may as well have been a special considering they had no connection whatsoever with the series' actual plot.

Ah, okay, I couldn't remember fully because Frey and Freya did actually appear in the series, and I thought maybe that may have meant they used a Rider Eyecon.

That said, Ghost actually did have a flashback to the final episode of Drive in episode four, when Takeru was remembering how he got the Newton Eyecon.

I loved Faiz/555, don't get what all the thread hate is about it tho.

It's the usual Inoue crap of "No characters ever talk to each other" thing, also Faiz is just kind of a combination of all the things people complain about in Heisei Rider series. We all know how women Riders get treated in Rider, Faiz has one of the worst with the extremely competent and cool Delta woman getting killed off so an incompetent man can take her place. Rider series have a bad habit of not quite sticking the landing, Faiz is probably the second worst behind Hibiki. Rider series are generally self-contained, so Faiz also ends on a cliffhanger on top of that (although it is somewhat followed up on in Heisei vs. Showa and Kamen Rider 4). Bikes are horribly underused in Heisei Rider, and Faiz's bike turns into a robot which gets used I think maybe twice in the entire series.

I like Faiz okay but it has a lot of problems.

Though I'm wondering how this week's episode fits into the Sento is Katsuragi theory. There's a couple of ways it could go from here. One is that Stalk gave rocker dude the appearance of Katsuragi, and gave Katsuragi the appearance of rocker dude. He may or may not have made himself appear like Katsuragi as well, I guess it depends on if he used his human form to make people think he was the real one for a while, or if he's just been in a permanent transformed state and just is saying he's Katusragi. Another way they could go is that he actually is Katsuragi, and Sento is someone who hasn't been revealed yet who was changed to look like rocker dude, and rocker dude was changed to look like Katsuragi.

The energy card that shoots out for Blade/Garren/Leangle's transformation actually was a barrier that stopped Undead, and sometimes they even used it offensively to knock the Undead back.

So I gotta say, Lucky's dad being a fake sand guy is nowhere near as interesting as it would have been if it had actually been his dad. Maybe they were just worried that it would come off as a repeat of Scorpio. Oh well.

I think Dynaman was used like once or twice in the series proper as far as I can remember.

http://powerrangers.wikia.com/wiki/Gokai_Changes

They list them per episode rather than by series, but it looks like not counting the final episode (since each series gets one use in the final battle), Dynaman was used in 11 and 32. Still, Dynaman was used more than Goggle V was, as that was only used in episode 8.

Other low use keys: Bioman got only two uses in series, Gokai Green turning into Green2 in episode 19, and a full team use in 28. Outside of Turboranger being used as a gag in the Carranger tribute episode, it was only used in episode 9. Jetman was only used in two episodes with a full team, and only one single use outside of that. Changeman only had one full team change, and was only used in two other episodes by individual Gokaigers. Also, Changeman was the Sentai they took longest before changing into, as there wasn't a Changeman Gokai Change until episode 32.

So yeah. As far as I can tell, the least used team was Goggle V, as there was only one team change for that series, and no individual changes outside of it. Even Bioman got one individual use outside of the single team use.

Also something else of note:

quote:

Only Denziman, Dynaman, and Bioman have never had a special introduction in any way, not even unintentionally as in the Turboranger change in episode 14 or in a solo transformation as in the five Basco-abducted teams as in episode 49.

I was hoping that since Sento is the SMARTEST HESEI RIDER he'd be able to figure this out himself instead of getting an informant. Why would Stalk have let this person know who he is, anyway, he doesn't even let ROGUE know his identity

Yeah, now that you mention it, this bugs me too. I can only think of two explanations, neither of them very satisfying. The first is that Stalk figured the guy's memories would be wiped, so it didn't matter if he revealed his identity to him. Again, given how much Stalk has been plotting, this isn't very satisfying since sometimes the memory wipe is selective, or minimal depending on how long the person is a Smash, so it doesn't seem like the kind of risk he'd take. I guess another side of this is that Nabeshima accidentally found out who Stalk is, and Stalk wiped his memories as a defense.

The second is that Stalk purposely revealed his identity to Nabeshima as part of his plan, possibly to demoralize Sento when Sento found it out, which would make him less of a threat. This theory works, but the problem is it relies on some real heavy gambles, such as Nabeshima actually getting his memory back (this wasn't a guarantee, especially since Sento still doesn't have his, unless Stalk has the power to restore lost memories but that hasn't been hinted at in the slightest), and that Nabeshima would only have gotten his memory back after all the bottles were purified (and the same applies here). Again, it definitely could have just been a huge gamble that paid off, but the plan seems like it'd have too high of a risk of failure.

They might explain it, but somehow I doubt it, Nabeshima just knew who Stalk was and the audience is supposed to accept it and move on.
