Is this the kind of game I could just play for the evening on weekends, or does it require more of a time commitment than that? I have always thought this sounded cool, but was scared off by the learning curve and performance issues.

Yeah I play pretty sporadically and it works well for that. It can be hard to find a good battle and if you're playing infantry you might have to walk around awhile to find the enemy. When you find a good battle raging over a town it's a lot of fun though.

I just actually read the OP- we actually do have a goon squad for this game with like 80 people in it, but everyone is inactive. If we decide we do want to squad up for this game, I and everyone else in it is set as a recruiter currently.

I can't believe I forgot we had a squad, probably because my alt is in it rather than my main :downs: I would still probably advise people to hook up with a squad that matches their timezone for the time being until we get enough people to maintain a presence in all timezones. That said we should aim to get some hot goon action going on the weekends as that's when the server is really busy anyway and we've a better chance of peoples playing time overlapping. I've been on pager duty the last two weeks so sorry for not keeping on top of the the thread, I'll try and get some more guides etc. done this week and see if I can get us a discord channel sorted out on the axis and allied servers.

Does anyone have a preference about what side to play? Also :siren:please post your in game handles:siren: so that I can add you to the OP and help you to find each other - this game can be great solo but it's always a much better time when you play as a group (and you will tend to kill more).

Also it seems they sorted the issues with extended ASCII characters so the game is now available worldwide:

============================================
World War II Online
Version 1.35.9.6 (September 2017)
============================================
This maintenance update primarily serves to improve the handling of extended ACSII (EASCII) characters present within the users My Documents folder path.

============================================
Server related:
============================================
- Addressed the Save and Restore of the Forward Base (FB) state. This ensures the individual FB states after a server restart are the same as they were before the server restart.

- Addresses the "Red Padlock" issue found on the Persona Selection Screen that prevented Persona Selection and therefore entry into the Game (1.35.9.5).

- Improvements to server stability/reliability to ensure maximum up time.

============================================
Client related:
============================================
- Improve the handling of extended ACSII (EASCII) characters contained within the users My Documents folder path. This will alleviate the issues some users were experiencing saving Game Settings, e.g. Game Video Resolution.

- Adjustments to the Fortified Mobile Spawn (FMS) to reduce the occurrences of AA and AT Guns flipping when they spawn into the game at an FMS placed on uneven terrain.

- Add the missing Truck to the United States Training Tutorials.

- Remove the Advanced Training Tutorials for Basic Armor until further review can be completed.

- Map and HUD Training Tutorials are now optional

Once a side is picked I'll start playing. I got it installed and ran around offline for a bit just messing with controls. How does the game handle controllers? I'll have to stick to using that until I can get a joystick and start doing some real plane shenanigans.

I saw someone in game say they were flying with an xbox controller last night, so I think it's possible?

I've been playing axis because my rank is higher on that side, but I will play either once we decide. The allied HQ situation does seem kind of bad right now so while they aren't getting steamrolled, they seem to have trouble putting together any effective attacks and just just reactively flailing at German attacks.

There have been periods of total allied domination as well, when brigades came into the game the axis high command just failed utterly to grasp the new mechanics and got crushed over and over - eventually the devs had to ask some allied HC players to switch sides to teach them how to not gently caress up multiple times on a daily basis.

Brigade based supply is planned to largely go away for a number of very good reasons and overall it'll be a lot more fun for everyone.

ehh don't worry about picking a side, you're better off just jumping in an getting a feel for things.

I'd say a joystick is essential for flying but you don't need a fancy one - some of the best pilots use a Logitech 3D pro which is about $25 last time I looked. Back in the days of yore goon flying prodigy toiletduck managed to not only fly with a mouse and keyboard but to also shoot people down (and with a bf110) but I think he's one of those people whose brains get rewired by a massive seizure or something. Do not attempt to fly with a mouse unless you can learn a new language in 3 days or recite the Liverpool to Wigan tram timetables from 1976-1982

Yes, you'll get a free month (and possibly a reduced sub offer after it ends) under welcome back soldier anytime between now and new year.

Steam accounts are for steam users but everyone still plays on the same server. Old accounts are not transferable to steam and vice versa.

The pricing plans are kind of contradictory right now, but your old account is locked into the most expensive one (which is either 12.99, 14.99, or 17.99 a month depending where you look). The 7.99 a month is I think only available to Steam users.

I would just reactivate your old account because chances are we'll all be burned out in a month anyways.

In my experience pretty sparse, once the frontlines start to move in either direction and the zeelands are no longer in play then there's no reason and nowhere to use the destroyers. The river patrol boats stay relevant throughout the campaign as they can be extremely nasty AA platforms in the right hands, especially en masse. The destroyers are the behemoths of the game - they are absolutely bristling with all kinds of weaponry that can gently caress up any ground unit (or town for that matter) but they become irrelevant fairly quickly.

Once brigade spawning goes away the map dynamics might change and the zeelands might become valuable again (they used to be really important in the days of town supply). Everyone knows the naval game is under served but it's a tiny minority of dedicated players so no-one really blames the devs for focusing on ground and air.

I remember huge tank and armored convoys leading the pack with dozens of infantry filled trucks behind towing the big guns and squadrons of bombers/fighters escorting. Massive air battles with dozens of planes filling the skies over combat zones. Tracers lighting up the night and flak cannon shells exploding. The horizon being absolutely filled with a thick line of blue names as you approached a city. Hundreds of people fighting in a single map square for hours with every inch of ground payed in blood. It was war and you were in the fucken thick of it. WWII Online wasn't just a game it was an experience. I'm being dramatic but it ranks top 3 game moments for me.

Now it all feels very compact, almost Battlefieldy. Its become a chess game of the high commanders with each side trying to catch the other side sleeping with a sneaky forward base and a quick city cap. No one uses the Big AT/AA guns because no one uses trucks to funnel infantry in. Big tanks are rare because no one wants to drive them for more than 5 minutes to their target. No more combined arms, no more big battles, no more war. I haven't played on a weekend yet so maybe thats when the magic happens.

Yeah I remember when I was in a town fighting a hectic defense and decided to bring in air support. I got back just as the town fell and could see tanks and infantry crawling over the whole town, and more on the roads leading to town. It was absolutely crazy and no game since then has come close to matching that scale.

The Battle of Brussels last week was insane. Fighting over several hours for Brussels itself, with British air superiority for the first few hours. Hurricanes and Spitfires were strafing the streets and the camp where the Germans were holding out and then boom, panzers come in to retake the north side of the city. Not sure how it turned out in the end. My new joystick should be arriving tomorrow so I might be back in the game sooner rather than later!

latest dev update is below, apparently they've had 45,000 users trying the game via steam :w00t:

quote:

Well we're now 100% released on Steam and the team has done a pretty solid job at improving stability of the Campaign server. We're keeping a watchful eye on the feedback coming from new Steam users and how we can improve their onboarding experience to WWII Online. Today we're going to cover a bit of Production and things happening in the pipeline now that we've crested this major milestone of getting the game onto Steam. This includes us improving some legacy art, and today we'll unveil the new iconic 88mm model that is inbound to the game shortly.

NEW 88MM MODEL INBOUND

One of the oldest models we have in game at this stage is a real eye sore. A major thanks to SADGUY for focusing his energy on getting this iconic weapon to look tremendously better and brought into the modern era.

VEHICLE CREW MEMBER UPDATES

As you can witness with the 88mm crew members from the BEFORE & AFTER fixes the crew members are being updated. We are currently experimenting with bringing those crewmen up a notch even further using the latest character models we have. An investigation and test phase is underway to see how we can achieve that while maintaining performance for clients. It may seem like not a big deal but remember all of the things you're currently rendering, those large scale challenges are still relevant.

Meanwhile some really old crew members are being updated and are in the can for deployment, which include:

251 Armored Carrier (Driver & Gunner)
Opel Driver
Morris Driver
Laffly Driver
Bedford Driver
Whacky Laffly Crew
Bofors Crew

We've been cleaning up several old crew members and we're going to continue to do so. This will include creating some new character art, particularly for pilots, naval crewman, tank commanders and everything in between.

HIGH EXPLOSIVE (HE) & KINETIC ENERGY (KE) AUDIT(S)

A quick mention and tip of the hat to Scotsman and HATCH for the insane amount of energy they're putting into getting you guys the most realistic / historically accurate data for how weapons should be performing. Most of the data work is completed here and we're pushing to get this going and out for QA testing as quickly as we can. This will dramatically impact how bombs explode, including the type of fragmentation they throw and the affects it has on opposing vehicles. Kenetic Energy are non-explosive projectiles covering all round types, ranging from the Armored Piercing (AP) rounds from your tanks all the way down to the small arms weapons like rifles and hand guns.

STEAM PROGRESS THUS FAR

We've had more than 45,000 folks sign up for accounts in only 17 days on Steam. That is a pretty amazing achievement! Population levels remain substantially higher than we have seen in years, routinely around the clock. We're very happy to report this progress and these production items coming (more not listed here) are intended to help bolster that success even further.

Major thanks to all of the veterans investing the energy to support us, stand up to those who are quickly criticizing our awesome game and make sure the new users get the most welcoming and "arms wide open" experience I have personally witnessed. You are all doing FANTASTIC, keep it up and don't stop offering the help to the new guys that you're doing so well!

You can solo in a tank/armor vehicles but you're much more effective multicrew. Especially in the lightly armored ones where near constant movement is the only thing keeping you alive. Its near impossible, at least for me, to flank an enemy and accurately shoot at the same time. You won't penetrate armor from the front.

huh, every time i tried to multi-crew it was a complete disaster. ive never had trouble moving and shooting before - honestly because the movement is completely predictable because i did the inputs, its legit easier for me to do solo

edit: also plenty of armor is vulnerable to the front if you know where to shoot. driver ports sometimes or just hit the gun and jam it (advice is 5 years old dont get mad at me if they changed this)

A lot of information out there is old and the devs haven't done anyone any favors by "our super awesome damage modeling means we can't tell you where the weak spots are in armor". Its kind of bullshit. There is even a guide on steam about sapping weak points that has been confirmed as outdated on the official forums.

sapping is different. i assume for the most point armors are similarly weak to AP

There being two types of satchels, HE and HEAT is also new. From what I've seen HE doesn't do poo poo against armor but HEAT seems to kill things if you put it where you think it should do damage. I really wonder how HE does against T0 tanks though, unless it's hardcoded to not hurt them it should easily kill them. Hell the armor is so thin on some tanks, you used to be able to kill them with grenades and point blank rifle rifle before both were hardcoded out.
