It's been improving. The new buildings in Los Angeles look cool and make 90% of the other buildings (outside of the already iconic designs like the US Bank Building) look like pure poo poo.  That shark fin looking tower is One Wilshire Tower. The lighting colors change quite a bit and during the day the thing is pretty much a giant reflection of glass and steel. Definitely feels like it belongs in a CGI city more than a real one. The massive amounts of LED lighting added to these buildings is making the whole city look like Tron at night, it's amusing. Plus the fact Los Angeles has a rampant "tent city" problem with literally dozens and dozens of homeless people building cities out of crates, tarps and tents at the base of these giant buildings (usually camping outside a Starbucks) makes you realize Blade Runner was too optimistic.

I blame the need to pay back architecture school fees and the students' resulting desperate desire to stand out. I went to a few end-of-year university shows, they were always designing some "high-concept" buildings that even the staff thought looked in style but hideous. Also a lot of post-apocalyptic junk houses. Seriously got the idea that some of them were playing too much fallout.

And the staircase is like an optical illusion or something like that and they had to hire assistants to help elderly museum-customers from tumbling down the staircase. It was designed this way for ~*reasons*~.
