It's a piece of JUNK!

RatHat posted:

I dropped off this show around season 13 and now I'm getting back into it. Any particularly good/bad episodes I should watch/avoid?

What makes a South Park episode bad is so incredibly subjective that it's probably better to just see for yourself. Although the majority of people would agree that you probably shouldn't bother with season 20 unless you're curious. It's not "bad" but it attempts to set up a big story arc and, for various reasons, botches the payoff in a way that makes it all feel pointless.

Episodes that I remember liking or just being generally well-received:

Season 14
  • Medicinal Fried Chicken
  • 200 / 201, if they're available anywhere

Season 15
  • You're Getting Old
  • A History Channel Thanksgiving

Season 16
  • A Nightmare On Face Time

Season 17
  • Black Friday trilogy

Season 18 - this season is good enough to watch all of, but I remember...
  • Freemium Isn't Free
  • Grounded Vindaloop
  • Cock Magic

Season 19 - probably just go for all of it, it all somewhat ties together and is mostly good

I actually recorded 201 on a VHS when it aired, and gave a copy to my coworker since there was no rerun to watch. Which I assume is the last time that ever happened in history.

Of course, that still had the minute-long bleeps during the last scene.

Uh, was Marcus some fan that they wrote a role for, or at least gave a voice to?

Because that didn't even sound intentionally weird, that just sounded...weird.

And kudos to Matt & Trey for actually making me supremely uncomfortable with the old lady farts.

It was as bad, if not worse, than PewDiePie showing up and breaking the fourth wall in the last episode of whatever season that was, but at least that was related to the content of the previous episodes.

Waltzing Along posted:

Avoid everything from this season and last season. That's 20/21. Everything before it is pretty high quality with hits and misses. Except season 16. That's a bad season, too with only a couple worthwhile episodes. The first half of that season (the spring run) is total trash. The second part is back to normal, but that's only 7 episodes of which a couple are good.

Must sees:

13: fish sticks, pinewood derby, fatbeard, butters bottom bitch, W.T.F., The F Word
14: tale of scrotie mcboogerballs, medicinal fried chicken, 200, 201, insheeption, coon trilogy, creme fraiche

16: sarcastaball
17: informative murder porn, world war zimmerman, ginger cow, the hobbit (and sorta the 3 part game of thrones black friday thing. it would be better as two episodes but the butters stuff is great)
18: go fund yourself, gluten free ebola, grounded vindaloop, cock magic
19: the whole thing because it is a somewhat linked. Not every episode is great but the running storyline works fairly well
20: none at all. just ignore it because everything that did work in 19 failed in 20.
21: none

I generally agree with this list with the inclusion of A Nightmare on Facetime and Poor and Stupid (because I'd always wanted to see SP do a NASCAR episode and was surprised with how well they did with it). Butterballs is worth it for the payoff at the end alone Butters :iceburn:ing his Grandma by telling her she's going to die fairly soon and he'll carry on as a happy-go-lucky kid.

I loved this episode. After finding inconsistent laughs so far this season, I laughed my rear end off the whole time. I lost it when Chuck E vomited, fell off the stage, and died. The Hummel beat down was awesome, too. Loved it!

Marcus felt a little weird, but I don't care, they've done plenty of odd one-off characters before.

Early forties, yes. My mom has some, and my grandmother has some. My grandmother actually got into collecting statues that were considerably more expensive, like Tiffany crystal cats and such.

They were ridiculously popular mid-1900s, and some were actually worth money as collectibles. But the problem is, there is no demand anymore, so they are worthless. I used to go to estate auction regularly, and as more and more of The Greatest Generation dies off, nobody wants the Hummels. They practically have to give them away. Same goes with fancy-eatin silver, china and crystal; the grandkids and great-grandkids just don't want that stuff.

They were also featured on an episode of Better Call Saul.

Eh, Hummels lasted a LOT longer then Beanie Babies, they spilled over from one generation to the next.

After my great-grandmother died my grandmother fought tooth and nail to get some of the furniture that was left over. It caused ripples in the family from the siblings infighting over all the old stuff. Now that my grandmother passed away, my mother and I couldn't give two shits about any of it. There is this huge incredibly crafted dining room table that seats 10 just sitting in an empty room with a filled china cabinet next to it that never gets used. I understand why stuff like that was so valued years ago but it just isn't practical in modern America. No one wants or can even fit huge pieces of gaudy and over the top furniture in their homes apartments.

I thought that was the best episode in a pretty long time, and I don't particularly hate this or the last season. Marcus is kind of annoying, sure, but also his part of the story is totally necessary for the nursing home stuff to work as well. Which was great, I loved the Killer Mike song and the oldies in particular, but just in general it felt like a very old school episode.

This exactly. Every once and a while Trey and Matt will surprise us with an episode that feels like Classic South Park, just to prove that they still have it in them to make a good show.

I think the problem is just that with their self-imposed weekly turnaround structure for the show, they have to be consistently "on" all the time and that's going to mean a lot of hit-and-miss. The issue with the longer narrative seasons was probably the fact that they had to keep up continuity which stretched out a "miss" for multiple episodes, instead of just loving up once with a weak episode but then turning it around with a fresh idea next week.

This is the second song playing during the Prison/Old People scene.

I was really into this dude for like a month and then spent $15 to go see him at a bar for the luls and he spent fewer minutes on stage than dollars I spent to get in. He Milli-Vanillied 2 of his songs, then did some fake coke out a plant in the crowd on stage and left and the crowd (Philly) got angry and weird basically immediately.

I'm so stoked they used this song for an episode of South Park
