the adoption of electron is what you get when you have nontraditional web developers starting to migrate there way towards other types of work

same with people being so hot to adopt nodejs

yeah, because why should the very best frontend tech be restricted to web browsers?

is it possible to do electron well? like, is the system inherently flawed, or is it just that a bunch of lovely js developers are writing lovely js apps and so electron seems bad?

every single electron app has its own complete duplicate of Chromium, so no

i don't remember if it's actual electron but vs code is the only good thing i can think of and it still manages to be a pig compared to anything native.

pretty sure thanks to vs code, vs2017 now needs to run a node.js instance to provide js intellisense

i was not commenting on nodejs specifically

i just meant that js is resistant to static analysis. doing anything useful with intellisense is gonna require a javascript runtime to eval poo poo and inspect the results.

for java ides you can use the js runtime built into standard java implementations

in vs.net, welp, kinda stuck with an external tool

bad ideas all the way down

someone decided "okay, doing this on the web just doesn't work", but instead of just throwing out all the javascript hackery and writing a real program, they figured they could drop a web server on the client machine and point their web app to that instead

every few months I answer the following questions in sequence

"can this thing be done by the browser as part of a web app?"

"what, not even with html5????? are you sure?"

"as you know, we're deprecating our normal locally-installed software in favor of a web app, and management would really like the web app to be able to do that thing. are you absolutely positive it's impossible? why don't you research it for a while?"

yeah, and npm promptly adopted those features. so there's no reason to use yarn now.
