Hey all.

So, I've been lurking around the Ace Combat Let's Play threads for a while now, and it's gotten me in the mood. You know how it is. You wake up with your hands all sweaty, holding onto your Joystick, so big and hard and dark, and you just want to use it. You don't care where. You see Ace Combat Assault Horizon on sale. It's for $4. "How bad can it be?" you think. So you go for it. And it's so unsatisfying. You feel dirty. It felt so good when you watched the intro and thought about flying around in that world, with those looks. But once you got in, the fun ended too fast, and it left you with an STD (Stupidly Terrible DFM).

So, enough of me trying to be funny. It feels as though there aren't enough good flight sims (or space sims) for the PC anymore. I grew up on US Navy Fighters, and Jane's US Air Force. I played through both Freespace games, and yes, Freelancer as well (though that was with a mouse and keyboard; joystick didn't feel quite right). Crimson Skies is probably my benchmark for a game that had great gameplay, crisp controls, and fun dogfighting. I did play HAWX when it first came out, but seeing an A-10 break the sound-barrier basically broke my brain, and I couldn't continue with it.

So, here's how it stands. I've got X3, but I can't ever seem to get into it. It's overly complicated, and every time I start it, I spend more time wrestling the controls than actually getting anywhere. Ace Combat Assault Horizon is terrible, and I may go back to it to get my $4 worth, but I think that might be asking too much. I've got SkyDrift, which is kind-of okay, but it's a racing game, not a dogfighting game. I think about reinstalling Freelancer or either of the Freespace games (with the OpenSCP mods), but I've played them so many times that I don't want to go through the opening areas or missions all over again.

What would you all recommend for someone who just wants to fly around a bit and shoot things, and not have to mess around with a dozen controls? Is Elite Dangerous worth it? Or Everspace?

Play Warthunder. Arcade mode basically a historical Crimson Skies and it's free. I got 874 hours in it.

Oh god, not an MMO. I'd rather not be interested in public humiliation while I'm getting my flights on.

Elite Dangerous is on sale this week. Would that scratch the itch? I don't think I've played Elite since the DOS days, so I don't know if it's still any good. I remember diving ships into planets to see if they'd explode.

I heard Star Citizen is getting a hot new update soon. You can start with one of the good ships for only a few hundred.

Calling War Thunder an MMO is a bit of a misnomer- there's single player content, both free/unlockable and for pay. You'll have to play a bit of multiplayer here and there for the former, but the community's been relatively friendly in my experience.

IL-2:BoS/M/K is where it's at, at least if you want a good balance of accessibility and realism. A bit expensive, but worth it, especially with the dynamic campaign coming down the road.

This seems to be a running theme with PC flight games, doesn't it? Microsoft Flight Simulator isn't too expensive, but there's a ton of expensive add-ons. There's another one called "DCS World", which is free, but then you have to pay for every plane you buy. X-Plane is straight up expensive, though I seem to recall that it was free at some point in history.

It's as though flight sims have become a niche market on PCs.

Oh look. Ace Combat Assault Horizon is on sale again. $4.99. It's almost as though it's not very good, isn't it?

Hah! Yes, I suppose I do deserve that.

I'll try downloading it next week. I was downloading Valkyria Chronicles, and I want to make sure I don't use up this month's bandwidth prematurely. According to most of the reviews, if you want to keep away from the Pay to Win crowd, you have to stick to the sim sections.

There isn't really any pay to win in war thunder, it's too skill based and most of the premium planes are side-grades or gimmick rarities. Even in arcade mode a noob in a higher tier premium will get wrecked by a more experienced player in a lower tier vehicle.
